People in the know don’t underestimate them at all...particularly Kossoff. He is still held I extremely high regard 45 years after his death. Free were only around for a relatively short time. But they left behind an extremely fine body of work. Perhaps they don’t get talked about as much because they split nearly 50 years ago. But those of us that were there at the time still talk about them 👍
Only people that don’t know Free call them underrated, for all the rest of us that listened to them live 🎸🎤 know how Great they were 🥇how brilliantly they gelled together to make this timeless music 👍🏻🤘🏼❤️
Simple, clean, groovin', no nonsense rock n roll that still holds up 50 years later. Just makes your ears and heart feel great. Like a fine wine or woman made to cherish. Free is top shelf in all areas. No one compares to Paul or Simon when they lock it in. Guitar & Bass had no choice but to jump on board. Awesome!!!
Damn, I have never heard of these guys until today. I was cruising around listening to Tom Petty radio on Sirius Satellite and his show Buried Treasure and they played this song and I have to pull over and listen to it. Nothing but awesomeness
Most people don't realize these guys were barely out of their teens when this performance was filmed, and Andy Fraser, I believe WAS 18. Just an unbelievably talented group.
Been following them since their Tons of Sobs album, before Alright Now was hit, Kossoff was my guitar hero. Went into shock for several days when he died (technically a 2nd time) as I'd dreamed of seeing them live one day.. Then bought the limited edition Free Story double album, played it over and over for years - probably went through more than one stylus on that album alone!
Kossoff utilizing the volume and tone knobs on his guitar throughout the song and controlling dynamics with his varied pick attack, masterful and no effects needed.
Chasbo Daniels Thanks and yeah, those are things it takes most guitarists a lifetime to achieve if they’re able to achieve them at all...and he had mastered it all at such an early age. But even so, the one thing no one can ever fake is soul and feeling...it’s something that’s in you or it’s not. You could feel every note he played because he meant it, such a special player.
spiritual cramp Yup, his maturity as a player transcended his actual age...most players never approach that kind of mastery in a lifetime of playing. There’s no substitute for that kind of heart and soul, he said more with just one note than just about anyone else.
You are so right, they were so Young!!!! All under the age of 20 with a #1 song, imagine the emense amount of pressure that would put on any person. These young men got better and did extrodinary acts of kindness trying to save their bandmate from the deathgrip of drug addiction. OMG just WOW. LOVE FREE FOREVER!!!!💜💜💜😘
@Divine Spark Yes I was there. It really was incredible. I don’t know if some of the equipment was damaged but they couldn’t use the whole of the set. For some reason Sunderland took to them really early and they just seemed to roll on from there. They were relatively short lived just 3 or 4 years really mainly down to Koss’s drug problems but they really were the business. If I had that time machine mate they would be the group I’d go back and see, and that from someone who saw Zeppelin, The Floyd and many others back then.
I'm sitting in My van listening to this and enjoying some fine cannabis. I feel this in my soul. Free was one of my Dad's favorite bands, loved to hear him tell me what is was like to see Free, Floyd, Sabbath, CCR, Skynyrd and so many others live.
This was an era of bands galore. These young boys could match with anyone. Go watch their performance at the Isle of Wight concert. 13 impeccable songs in front of 500,000+ people. One of my all time favourite bands.
Superb song and brilliant performance. None better! The singer, the guitarist, the bassist, the drummer are all such brilliant talents and make up one hell of a band.
The bass player Andy Fraser was one of the greats of all time! He either wrote or co-wrote all of these songs that they did and I believe he was only 17 years old at the time.. 👊👑👍
Rusty Y, yes "wringing the life outa that guitar neck " Lately I've been thinking that same idea. GUITAR music usually has some non-musically correct sounds. RockNroll is about rebellion. So hang it by its neck, choke it, make it scream in agony, squeeze your fingers on it's Adams Apple. And the Wang bar makes that slow, death sound. Only to spring-back to life, and fight some more. Seems like Guitars have a lot to say. And they will YELL about it, if you're not paying attention. Gotta run , because I hear a siren I guess the guitar called 911 on you. Don't snap it's neck you'd miss your best friend. I know this stuff cuz I'm Guitarded.
I'm binging on Free today... Like I did yesterday & the day before that, I basically listen to them every day always have always will We all know how brilliant Paul was then, the magic of Kossofs guitar, but Andy was a fantastic bass player & gave Free its particular sound, he was unique & then was just 16 yrs old turning 17 after a few big hits Hard to imagine kids today doing what these guys did! Paul being the oldest at 20 & by then they were a huge band touring the world. Kossoff dying at 26 was worse than tragic, if he'd lived & got off the drugs then we would have seen him become a giant wth his playing its so so damn unfair he had to go.
Was there ever a better voice, or Bass like that, of course not forgetting Koss. So simply best band ever , sorry forgot Simon great drummer. Loved them all
Heck of a lineup, eh? Andy on bass and Simon on drums had that loosely rolling rhythm down perfectly. Bad Company’s Biz Burrell and Simon Kirke duplicated it and helped sell millions of records.
Just started diving deep into old school rock about 2 months ago, late in my 20s and I got to say. Finding free is incredible. They were never talked about at least when I was growing up. Everyone talked about GnR, led, sabbath, the Beatles. But I never heard anything about free, every now and then I would hear about bad company. Free is so good, I don’t know how no one talks about them. I’m definitely showing this band to everyone I know! 😅
4 Brilliant, very young guys!!!! Big fan of Free GREAT MUSIC!!!!! All top notch 👌👏👍 They surely were underrated! I'm so thankful I grew up when I did!!!!! 60s 70s Best music ever! I saw Bad Co in 79…. and solo Paul in the early 90s. I was very lucky to have met Paul after that show! Paul still has a great voice to this day! I will be cranking up Free ALL weekend!!!!! 😀🎸
Class. Sheer class, from a bunch of young lads with an ability level way above their late teen years. So sad that Paul never made it through the 'rock years', and Andy has recently left us too.
The guitar and Bass lick is so haunting. I listen to them when I was in junior high, still love it.Some of the most iconic blues metal sound are set by group like them. Immortalized
Paul Kossof was an incredible guitarist and very underrated, I first heard this on the album when I was maybe 13, omg I’m 68 next birthday; but this sounds as fresh as ever. Beautiful times beautiful music.
@John Tyler thank you for acknowledging that they were better than the stones...thought I was the only 1 crazy enough to think that way...AND THEY WERE ALL UNDER 21 WHEN ALL OF THEIR BIGGEST HITS WERE WRITTEN
First concert. Free. Edin. Lucky to have seen them. Unique band. Great singer. Great drums. Great bass. And Koss on gtr. It doesn't get any btr. Huge influence on me. Thanks Free. I wish yould lasted a lot longer. 🎸
Saw them at the Lanch (UK Cov Uni today) just after Alright Now, was issued. We were at the stage front seated on the main hall floor - I had me Levi jeans and jacket on Che Guevara T-Shirt - I could have touched Paul Rodgers they were that close - what memories
I was 15 when Free was in their heyday. Listened to them on a juke box in a little soda shop in the Miami Lakes shopping center we would ride our bicycles up there from Hialeah. There was a electrical shed behind the center that was never locked. My friend and I would talk some of the local honeys to go back there and make out. Ahh the good old days. Brings back great memories.
I’ve heard how spare the band’s music was. But the depth of sound from just four musicians is astonishing. It’s rich and nuanced and seems like they have more band members than they actually do.
when a band plays like this, the audience should be just overwhelmed standing on their feet, dancing, not looking like crazy dummies christ when can you hear such deep deep soul take it in breath it in, know that your lucky to have been there, lucky as hell
As already said: UK, 1970s. That was an enthusiastic audience! You should see them when they don't like you. Well, pretty much the same actually. lol Modern UK audiences are more annimated.
I think , & this is just me , if in the time you looked under the radar there were so many "great" bands , now underestimated , but we enjoyed them & they shaped the future , & left a past. Bless them all. X
