The album "fire and water" was my introduction to Free. I had only heard All right now at that point. The album still holds up and I still play it occasionally.
3 of them were still in their teens and the other only a couple of years older! You should check out their performance of this song, at the Isle of Wight Festival. It's epic! :)
Oh boy 🤪 another chance to see Paul Rogers strutting around in those tight white pants! I had such a HUGE crush on him when I was a teenager - hubba hubba... But seriously, this entire band was extraordinarily talented. Bass, Andy Fraser showed talent from an extremely young age and was mentored by British blues legend Alexis Korner (who also mentored Paul Rogers, Steve Marriott and many other up and coming young artists). Alexis allowed both Andy and Steve Marriott to live with his family when they were thrown out of their families homes for various reasons, and really nurtured them. He also helped Andy and Paul form the band Free (and I believe gave them their name) and encouraged them. Korner was a very important person in early british rock and led extrememly interesting life. He was in the middle of the whole scene in the mid 60's and you are right, it was a very fluid scene where everyone knew everyone and played on each others records and formed and reformed groups. Paul and drummer Simon Kirke started Bad Company, Sadly, the very talented guitarist Paul Kossoff was another rock and roll tragedy who died in 1976 at aged 25. Andy played around with different groups and sadly died of Aids in 2015. BTW, both Andy and Paul were just teenagers when this video was filmed.
Koss was a very raw but awsome guitarist! Had the best vibrato, as much so Clapton asked him how he does it so i hear. The stop at the end of the jam before the last chorus....they was on it!!!
. When we were in the army, they had these cadence with Jody (back door man). Jody got your girl and gone was one line. Well, this song is for Jody, AKA Mr. Big. You have to do Bad Company. Paul Rogers and Simon Kirk from Free formed Bad Company after Free disbanded.
Another great tune from this same performance is Ride a Pony - actually my favorite from this concert. The guitar lead is awesome, the bass line is incredible, drums and singing phenomenal as usual too! Please give it a review - promise you’ll love it!
Paul Rogers was a huge influence on Ronnie Van Zant and Skynyrd.Rogers and Gary Rossington were friends for 50 years.Rogers led the all-star tribute to SKYNYRD a few months ago
Agree with you on Andy Fraser he kills the bass parts, playing in effect lead bass. Great pickup on the range of musicians that were all loosely or tightly, in some cases, friends or aware of each other. I used to pickup Melody Maker (english music trade paper) each week and the want ads often had requests from bands for replacement musicians or ads like...'guitarist looking for bassist, singer & drummer - auditions open & the date'. I also used it as a resource to know who was coming to Philadelphia/NJ/NYC area & when, to get tickets as early as possible.
I've always enjoyed that performance. Excellent choice Biz ! One of my favorite vocalist and band. Check out their song Seven Angels. It gets overlooked but it shouldn't be. Their song Fire and Water is a good one also. It's from the albumep entitled Fire and Water that has this song Mr, Big, and Alright Now on it.
Hey just subscribed and watched your Free reaction, great job, had the great pleasure of seeing Free Live twice in my home town of Bristol England, both times amazing, How good is Paul Rogers, well a example, Jimmy page had him for two albums they were called The Firm, both dam good albums, but for me the one that says it all was for a shortish period he sang for Queen, he didn't try and be Freddie Mercury, he sang Queen songs his way, they also included some Free and Bad Company songs, sad we lost Andy Fraser to aids, and Paul Kossof to smack, anyway great work, take care English Billy.
Yeah !!! Bizzz! This is nutty stuff. I guess you know the impact that this band had on Lynyrd Skynyrd !!! Ronnie wanted to sing as good as Paul !! He ended up doingsomething even more intense . This song seemed to do something to Jake Gyllenhall in the film "Demolition" . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kGKX7114C-4.html
Great reaction to a classic band FREE but when they became bad company man wow they just really took off with only two original members the drummer Simon and Paul Rodgers the lead singer but the original guitar player Paul Kossoff die eventually of heroin overdose
