Beautiful group of plants. My daughter doesn’t understand why plant lovers collect free plants. Love this!

Thank you! It's a funny plant lover thing isn't it? Something nice about a free plant or a rescue.

I have a jade plant that started as three inch long plant that I picked up at the high school where my daughter went. We were registering her as a freshman. She is now in her mid-40’s and the plant is as tall as her. I also have lilacs and mission figs that I got from a friend. She got from her mother when she married and brought cuttings with her when she moved here. She believes the original plants would be at least 100 years old if they still existed. Now there are housing developments where they used to be. It is interesting to trace them back. If anyone is interested, there is a catalog called The Rare Seed Catalog that sells seeds with histories like that. It’s fascinating.😊

I love hearing stories like that! Heirloom plants! Fun as well to hear about your daughter and the Jade plant. When they are happy they can live for so long and grow huge! My good friend has a grapevine that her late grandmother brought as cuttings from Armenia to Lebanon to LA over many decades. It now thrives in my friend's garden and is a magical piece of her homeland. 💚

Yes! Always look on the ground, especially for succulents as there are always broken succulent pieces to be found at my Home Depot anyways!

What are the tall orangy - pink plants in your front garden, they are gorgeous. You went around them a few times but didn't mention them, I'm guessing they weren't free but they are something very different I'd like to see if I can find them in Western Australia. Thanks for sharing your garden, I enjoyed seeing your placement of the succulents. Lovely garden.🌹

Oh I think those are the Euphorbia Sticks on Fire... and I did actually get them for free! I got several from a large plant my mom was trimming back, and another from a neighbor who was also clearing out her garden. They go that beautiful orange pink when exposed to lots of direct sunlight. If they are in the shade they turn completely green. They are also known as pencil cactus. I also love them because the gophers do no eat them due to toxic sap. Always wear gloves and long sleeves when handling this plant as the sap can cause bad skin rash and blisters. I bet they would do really well in Western Australia, I believe they are native to the Southern African region.

I currently have over a dozen succuelent pups growing and 2 small catcus babies from some freebies I got at the HD. I hit the jackpot the other night brought home about 8 leaves found on the ground at HD, hoping a few will start making some pups. Succulents have become a fun addiction!! I live right next door to HD, Its hard to not want to go there all the time!

Beautiful collection of 😢plants. That’s a lot of free plants. How do you water all of them? I love to prop but don’t have neighbors like yours and never find much at Home Depot or Lowe.
@FreePlantsForever
@FreePlantsForever Год назад
Most of my plants are drought tolerant and don’t require too much watering. We do have a timed drip irrigation system in the garden for the drier months, and everything else just gets the hose once or twice a week. As for finding free plants, take a look on Craigslist or Facebook for either plant swap groups or people getting rid of plants on Marketplace. You might be surprised how many people are giving stuff away.

Amazing garden and created mostly with free plants. Wish I could grow a garden like that here in Colorado but this area in zone 5 with heavy clay soil and very dry is a tough place to grow anything.
@FreePlantsForever
@FreePlantsForever Год назад
We have a lot of heavy clay too, I've been researching plants that help break it up - Sunflowers are apparently are fantastic in clay - good for Summertime color!

I'm in Colorado on eastern plains and our garden is mostly in containers, lots of buckets collected on trash day, fabric pots, and garden boxes made from free pallets. Just use containers and you will find success.

Hi there, I am curious how is that area by the street watered? How much water it gets? Thanks
@FreePlantsForever
@FreePlantsForever 24 дня назад
Great question. We have drip irrigation installed, which waters the plants on a timer, but they are also very drought tolerant so we often turn the water off for the winter and spring months and let mother nature water them. We could also hand-water with a hose if needed, but the drip does the job even better.

I'm in PA. Would most of these need to be houseplants for me or would any winter over??
@FreePlantsForever
@FreePlantsForever 24 дня назад
Most of my succulent and aroid plants are not frost-resistant, so they would have to be brought indoors for the winter. There are some succulents, such as sempervivum, which can tolerate colder weather, but most of my plants need to stay in temperatures above 40 degrees.

Sometimes they just thrive on neglect! But they also require a lot of light. Mine do best in my bright, Californian patio.
