I've often been thinking exactly the same! And well said! (y) I've afraid this is not just a possibility, but also a likely answer to your question, JuMa: Most of them not only have a (excuse my language) "shitty" life, but it also makes them feel better if they can find someone to bully! No matter what, it must affect people who spend many, many hours filming and editing these relatively short videos, and just hand them over to us for free! (y) (We all know what just one single DIY book costs, which only has a fraction of what we get from each of these very good DIY videos, like these from Matt!) And not "just" to watch, but also gives us the knowledge and inspiration to try out new projects, new ways to work and make things we couldn't before, and with a better outcome (y) How anyone can see all this as a negative thing, well, they for sure aren't good people!! Because IF they were, and they were not interested in this video or videos like these, they would just find other videos to watch, and just leave without a Thumbs Up or a comment. An option is not a mandatory duty (I think it's called in English) Though I'm sure, that after a while, skilled and generous people like Matt here, for him all the subscribers, all the positive thumps up, and all the positive comments as well as relevant criticism or questions, they mean a LOT more to him than the few "low life bullies" who's negative reactions are absolutely useless. Sorry for my poor English, but it was either this or my far worse German or Spanish, or my native language, Danish *smile

Agreed about iterating with Fusion360 and other modeling software like SketchUp... which I use often for the reason you state. Regardless of how efficient they are for design, planning etc, I feel a full-scale drawing is often much better suited to the physical part of a build in the shop or on a jobsite. I do understand that others adapt and perfect other workflows so I would never insist this concept is the only way or right way (not that I think you were implying that) but it is often a very practical and effective way, worthy of having in your arsenal of methods to deploy. I understand why you like those paper mate pencils and I appreciate that. Little story...for my ENG102 (or something) class on mechanical drawing, the "book" requirement was for a portable drafting kit (Ames of Iowa, IIRC). Yes, actual drafting with pencils and triangles, which I also took in high school. Contained within that drafting kit was a .5 or .7 mm Pentel click-type mechanical pencil. I had never seen one of those before. It worked perfectly and I used it not only for drawing, but for all assignments, tests, etc. that didn't require pen. To this day, it is my go-to for any kind of fine lines. Sometimes, a click gives too much lead, but I still love those pencils. I have probably put miles (exaggeration but you know what I mean) of lead through them. To summarize, I don't think you could pry my beloved Pentel pencils from my cold, dead hands. :-)

I too acquired one of those cool Ames Drafting Kits... loved that thing! Sadly it was superseded with 3D modeling courtesy of SketchUp but I've still got drawings created with that cool Kit. I used to use that with 4H or 6H lead, very lightly, for construction and layout lines that were to be removed later. I'm also doing a bit of learnin' on SketchUp, but I hesitate because I spent the last 35 years sitting in front of computers for work (engineering analysis) and now have the need to be on my feet in motion with my hands busy. Hello Matt, At ~29:20 you mention an 11 degree compound angle cut but we would need another angle to accomplish that final compound angle ....can you share a little more info on how you figured that compound angle please? or did you use some other creative set-up to make that final cut? Thanks, Tom C
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
Hey Tom, you dialed in on a subtle but tricky little operation there... nice! Not sure your question exactly but I can tell you that, knowing the top edge of the bottom frame is ripped at an 11 degree bevel, I need to cut the corner at that angle. The challenge is that the corner piece is at 45 degrees to the faces... complicated, I know. I used the same auxiliary fence 'trick' as you see me use in this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-49TbvjWSjvs.html to make those compound angle cuts except my fence had a 90 degree notch in it instead of the 60 degree cut seen in the video. With that fence holding the corner block I merely set the saw to 11 degrees and made the cuts. Feel free to ask for more clarification if I missed the mark... Best, Matt
@tomcooper748
@tomcooper748 3 года назад
@@NextLevelCarpentry Thanks for your quick reply Matt. No further clarification needed here, as soon as I saw your pyramid jig I knew exactly what you were talking about for the range hood corner cut, although I don't know why this works out mathematically. I was anxious to see how you were going to calculate the compound angles for the front-to-side panel corners, but your splined panel joints was a clever, quicker and stronger alternative, that idea is a keeper. Your work and the care you spend on your presentations is outstanding, one of the best carpentry & woodworking channels on the RU-vid. Best Regards, Tom C.
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
There are all manner of compound angle calculators out there but the main reason I chose to do the splined wood corners is because I didn't want a glue joint in the very corner where the panels meet because I didn't want the plaster coating to crack there. I felt that the solid wood corners with glue joints offset by an inch are going to be more stable and predictable over the lifetime guarantee I provide customers for the work I do. Simply using a compound miter calculator and mitering the corners would be easier but in this case not better IMHO. I appreciate your interest and dialogue in this rather technical matter... Now that is funny, When I first read the title I was thinking along the same lines as your self! And Matt said it could be adjust on the fly! I tried to adjust the thickness of a fly the other day but it flew away before my fly thickness swatter could hit the fly.

Another great build from the Master! I have a question. I haven't been able to get a good answer. I need a half inch plug cutter. I have one, but it smokes and doesn't cut a perfect plug. Can you point me to a good one? Thanks.
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
Hey Russ, Sorry, I don't have a plug cutter to recommend. My first reaction was to say Snappy because I like their other tools so well but the reviews didn't look stellar and, without actually having and using one to see for myself, am not comfortable making a recommendation. Feel free to post a link if you end up finding one? Best, Matt

@@NextLevelCarpentry Thanks Matt. I too looked at Snappy because you had used their tools, but found the same thing. So, if not Snappy, who? I bought one that burns, and don't want to make the same mistake twice.

@@russmartin4189 Veritas, maybe? www.veritastools.com/Products/Page.aspx?p=153 they mention re-sharpening instructions which I think would indicate an attention to the necessity of clean cutting edges...

@@NextLevelCarpentry Matt. I just ordered the Snappy cutter. I know they make good stuff or you wouldn't buy their products. Also, I don't trust all the reviewers on Amazon. Some are probably using a hand drill. And, in the event it isn't good, I can send it back free of charge by dropping into a UPS box somewhere.

I was wondering if range hoods constructed of flammable materials would be allowed by code in all states.
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
The wall behind the range hood and the cabinets to each side are always flammable so I don't think there's any code restrictions for residential kitchens anyways

Hi! What do you use on the outside corners ?
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 2 года назад
The outside corners are made of hard maple as seen in the video. The finish on them is the same Venetian plaster as the rest of the hood. My client was and is still extremely pleased with the finished hood in her new kitchen! Best, Matt

Are you going to drywall over this so the plaster holds up? Seems like a shame to cover up this nice finish carpentry?
@NextLevelCarpentry
@NextLevelCarpentry 3 года назад
Actually a 5-step plaster finish is applied directly to the hood planned and built in the video, no drywall involved... Best, Matt

@@NextLevelCarpentry thanks Matt! Once again, well done on the video and project! I thought I saw you mention somewhere what plaster product/process you'd be using but I can't seem to track it down. Would you mind sharing a link (I've got a similar plaster hood project coming up and like the idea of bonding straight to a wood hood)? All the best!

@@zachdominguez6848 Don't remember if I mentioned it or not but here it is: www.coloratelierpaint.com/product-page/shower-plaster-1 My client and her designer came up with it and, so far, so good. It's an unusual product and process but it all seems legit. I personally put the bonding primer and first coat of plaster on it and my initial impression is that it's about like a cross between finishing concrete and taping drywall. FYI it went on very well over the Medex panel but, judging by some plywood sample boards I did, I'm glad I didn't do the hood out of plywood. Hope that helps? Best, Matt
