Simple custom range hood frame for beginners. In this video I take you through the basic steps to building a custom range hood frame. After the skeleton, (frame) is built sky's the limit as to how you finish the outside.My issues have always been the tricky angle cuts. In this video I explain them in a simple easy to understand way. Hope it helps. Lastly, don't be afraid to try one. They really make a statement in any kitchen.

It’s 80. That’s it, it’s 80 degrees. The plumb cut that you put on the “rafter” to miss the duct was cut at 80 degrees. It is the complement of the 10 degree level cut you put on the bottom of the rafter where it rests on your level frame.

@athomeandtravel995
@athomeandtravel995 2 года назад
Thank you! Yes I believe a 10 degree angle would be fine with a larger hood. when making the frame just hold the boards up to make sure you are happy with the angles. If you need to tweak them a bit that should be no problem,

Great video!!! Thank you so much. I actually started on my diy range hood and came across an issue I’m not sure my beginner woodworking abilities are seasoned enough to secure joints. I have a Kreg jig but did not work to securely join the 10 degree angle/10 degree mitre cut piece to flat surfaces frame. How did you do it? Thanks in advance!
@athomeandtravel995
@athomeandtravel995 3 года назад
So glad you enjoyed the video. Great question. Sorry I didn't mention that in the video. The Kreg jig works great to secure a flat board to a flat board but not great for any angled cuts. For those I just held the angled wood flat against the other piece then predrilled some holes at an angle that looked good. I then tightly held them in place and secured with screws using an impact driver. A drill with a driver bit will also work fine. While securing them they will get a little squirrely and is a little tricky. Take your time you will get it. The good thing about making the frame is that it will all be covered at the end of the project.

Did you attach the frame to the ceiling joists, or to blocking added between them? Or are you relying solely on the attachment to the vertical studs to carry the range hood’s downward load? I’d imagine the up / down force is the most important, no?
@athomeandtravel995
@athomeandtravel995 2 года назад
Skip ahead in the video to 7 minutes 5 seconds. I discuss the strength. But to answer your question, this frame is fastened directly to the wall studs with some large screws. Nothing is being supported by the ceiling.

@athomeandtravel995
@athomeandtravel995 4 года назад
Hi Lindsey. You are correct. Not really that difficult to build. We used the Valore Cascade 30" under cabinet range hood from Costco. For any custom range hood you don't have to purchase a range hood insert which usually are a lot more money. Just look for a under cabinet range hood and just build your decorative range hood around it. Once you get the angles figured out things go together pretty good.
@traws06

How do you get access to the plug in for the vent? According to code you have to have convenient access to any and all outlets in the house. I'm trying to design one to build for my kitchen but can't figure out how all these hoods I'm seeing online have access to behind the hood to the power source?
@athomeandtravel995
@athomeandtravel995 4 года назад
Great question. It sounds like you are remodeling. I assume you already have a standard vent fan or some type of fan system above the range.The wiring for your current fan is the wiring you will use for the new custom fan you will be installing. Just disconnect the old one during remodel. All range hoods and vent fans should have an electrical junction box built into the unit. This box is where you feed the power wire into for direct hook up. That becomes a live feed to the switches on the front of your new range hood. All wiring connections will be in the accessible electrical box within the unit. There is generally not a plug end on them. If you currently have no power source above your range, you will need to run one. Hope this helps

The total height of the range hood is 52". I am not exactly sure of the top frame measurements. The reason why is because I made the top frame size what ever it needed to be to match up with the four main frame 2"x4"s.

@@athomeandtravel995 Thanks. I was trying to get an idea of the main frame (the slope part) measurements (top and bottom. My daughter wants me to build one for her. I know your bottom frame on top of the vent is approx 30"w by 19.4" D (size of vent). So what is the chimney depth and width? It appears your chimney does stick out farther than the cabinets (depth of 12"). I would like the chimney depth with facing approx 12" in depth. Thanks again great video. Hoping to order vent tomorrow. Richard.

I just watched your video on placing the facing boards. This new hood had a difference shape than your initial hood. I looking to build a hood similar to your original one with a chimney part that maybe 3' tall. These videos gave me a good idea on how to start the project and to use the same side slopes since my daughter wants shiplap wood. I will use a little geometry to determine the angle of the frame. Thanks again. Richard
@athomeandtravel995
@athomeandtravel995 3 года назад
@@kathypinner432 Yes, definitely try to make one. At the very top it sticks out 14" from the wall. At the bottom frame it sticks out 211/2". The range hood itself sticks out 19" from the wall thats where the 2 1/2" extra comes into play. Simplest was it to come up with the frame at the bottom because that really cant be changed based on the range hood you choose. Then really it's about the angle you want everything to be. If you gt to the top and the chimney looks to small, just reduce your slope and the chimney will be larger.

If I were to do a 36" range hood instead of the standard 30", I would start with the 10 degree angle and believe it would look great. All you would really be doing is making the front view appear a little wider because of the 36" instead of the 30".

@athomeandtravel995
@athomeandtravel995 3 года назад
I am not exactly sure what your project consists of but most range hoods measure 30". This is so they fit directly above a 30" range. Typically they have the upper cabinets spaced 30" apart to accommodate the 30" Range hood fitting snuggly. If a custom range hood is being built a 30" hood can still be used but when the frame and hood is built you will need more than a 30" space. Therefore the upper cabinet spacing is larger than 30". I just used a basic 30" range hood from Costco and built the frame around it. If you need a 28" range hood I would suggest googling them to see what you can find. Good luck with your project.
