In this video, we took on building a custom hood vent for our kitchen. We wanted to keep the farmhouse / reclaimed wood feel to this one, but not have the huge price tag. We ended up using a low end mountable hood vent from Broan, and building a custom frame, then wrapping it with reclaimed / pallet wood. We hope you enjoy this one and we hope to inspire you to take on your own DIY projects!!!

Well done! It's always interesting coming across people in life, youtube, wherever......who share nearly all the same values and taste. I'm building my kitchen right now....literally constructing all of the cabinets, doors, drawers, and of course....a hood. Anyway, just about all the materials in your kitchen is the exact same as what we're installing in ours. I too am teaching my kids on how to use tools and use them safely and have also found it to be a challenge to be a teacher for kids. It's difficult finding the right words for them to understand what they need to learn and how also how to say it to them. Well, enough blabbing from me. Almost forgot one last thing, where the electrical line came through vent, you should have a grommet in that opening. The line resting on that edge over time, from the vibration, will wear through. We were researching videos on building a hood and found your video. We are restoring an older home and purchased the same hood except ours is vented. We are going to copy your design. Great video.

How did you install the range good? Is it attached to the frame or does it sit on a ledge?

Great question! My apologies if I didn’t cover that well enough. So what I did was screw it to the wood frame after I screwed that to the wall (the frame). If you want to reach out to me via email david@toughguys.tv I can email you some photos from inside the range now to better show how it is attached. I used 4-6 screws I believe and it’s just screwed to that frame. Thanks for watching and for the question!!

good video...I'm a Rigid tool fan and you should check out the palm impact gun. Way better then that flexible driver attachment and a good excuse to buy more tools.

Did you have to seal the wood or use any coating with it being used right there around the cooktop?

Great Question!! As of now we haven’t had the need for any coatings. The wood hasn’t suffered any ill effects of being above the stove. Thanks for watching!!!!! 💪🏻💪🏻
