After making the pirate rum (link below), I wondered if I could essentially squeeze out some more rum for free using the dunder left in the pot and some feints I had been collecting. But is "free" any good?

I think a great way to repeat this, if you were going to, would be to take the rum backset and feints as well as a neutral spirit and let it marry together for a bit (maybe a day to a week) then run it and see what happens. Just my 2 cents. Love the vid, look forward to the next one.

I did the same thing but with ujssm corn which had been fermented and left sitting in water for 2 months. I came home and dissolved the sugar in some new backset and added it to this with some more water and no yeast.... 2 days later and the airlock is bubbling away. I distilled this and it is extra tasty the whole way through

I like Jamaica rum similar to Appleton’s I make it with a Boka When used at a constant rate eg 3ml for 10 ses the still works progressively like a pot still starting at 96abv stays there for about 80 percent of the alcohol and then progressively goes through the cuts if I cut it at about 80abv l get a fragment and full flavoured lite rum it gives me something close to the tripple retort rum your historian was talking about Regards Murray Young

Hi Jesse, I actually did something very similar last week. With the alcohol sale ban in South Africa due to Covid restrictions, we were a bit desperate to get some liquor out while our rum washes are busy trying to ferment in the cold... I remembered that I had about 6 litres of feints that are mostly rum ( small amounts of gin, whiskeys and orange/chillie Brandy/Mampoer). Product was absolutely fantastic, thought it would be a cleaner neutral for maybe a gin with lots of "spiced rum" flavors but came out super "rummy". Stuck it on some Oak for a week and is one of the best rums I have made, I even swopped out one bottle that I promised to someone with a bottle of my "good" rum I was reserving because it was so tasty. Everyone is going nuts about it... Add some of the Baccaneer Bob's "essense" and it makes an awesome dark rum also!

hey Jessie what exactly are faints? sorry for the silly question
@quatre1559
@quatre1559 3 года назад
Faints are anything that dont make it into the final product of a run, excluding the "foreshots." For example if you have 10 jars of collections and only use 7 of them to make your rum, the 3 left over would be considered faints.

So... I have a bucket of dunder and a bucket of wash. Idiot me used the exact same type of buckets (I have a ton of food-grade buckets I get from my local bakery for free) and I didn't label them. They look and smell about the same. Maybe I should mix them together, add some of my feints, and give it a run though?

You would think that the people who came up with a spirit made from old backset and black strap molasses because they were super cheap would have figured this trick out, if there was anything to be gained from pouring faints into your backset and hoping for the best

Maybe there's a bit too much in it to expect more than "I did it for the fun and to see what could be done with the outcome". In comparison to the result of the all feints run video, for me there's no way to point out a benefit from re-using the rum leftovers that way. But I'm curious wether re-using spent wash is a thing in general, and what to expect. Are there diffeerences between fruit-/grain-/rum-washes when it comes to re-using? I'm not thinking of "souring" like a sour mash bourbon or live dunder rum thing, just siphon off the liquid to still and "dilute&pimp" the trub into a new mash. Will it just be a well-nourished sugar wash? Hints of the original mash aroma profile? Or just B-category stuff not worth the efforts?

agree with this. out of all the ujssm i did last year, the one smelling closest to a real bourbon is the single distilled batch i did and just cut roughly the hearts from the run. smelt the worst when young, smelling great after 10 months. gives me hope for the all grain i just fermented, got an infection, distilled anyway and smells like fish. not sure how to decided how to blend it though when i can barely stand to sniff it.

@LokiRaziel

Didn’t you make a “rum extract” from the back set, at one point? What if you added some of that to the final product? Also you kind of mentioned it already, but I was going to say, if my other option was adding neutral spirit, I’d rather just add sugar to the back set and referment, before distilling with the rum faints.

I did it years ago but found the dunder was very acidic so put shellgrit in it and it gave off CO2 and reduced the acidity - then the fermentation worked. I didn't have your nose and taste for spirit then - still don't - it's been quite a few years since I was distilling and my still was destroyed in the bushfires of 2019 /2020 . Your videos make me want to get back into it again! Thank you!
