With every release FreeCAD is becoming more and more mature. Lets keep pushing and make FreeCAD a no brainer for all the manufacturers out there. Respect for providing all those video instructions on RU-vid.
Thank you so much, it's been a honour to do these tutorials. Freecad is such an amazing program and has helped me restart my joy of 3d design again. BTW are you the creator of FCViewer? One thing I must explore.
The 0.21 release brings lots of improvements for the Sketcher, Techdraw and FEM workbenches. Too bad there aren't many changes for Part and Part Design.
I love the way FreeCAD continues to improve. I only use a fraction of its capabilities and find it to be instrumental in my small engineering business. Kudos and huge thanks to the FreeCAD developers that make this such awesome software.
Thanks for the rundown. Let's start with this pop-up notifications enhancement: That's fine, I guess, but the core defect you see here is a much bigger problem: It says "check report view," which shows NOTHING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. The report view still idiotically says "check the report view." Why doesn't the report view show the critical information: "Wire is not closed?" Also, you got lucky on this one, because usually you don't even get that extra pop-up with a real explanation. All you get is "check the report view," which contains nothing, and that's it. You're screwed until you find what obscure problem is buried in the model somewhere. I'm psyched about FreeCAD and really appreciate it (and have donated to it), but this is dumb. In fact, the pop-up notification is almost worse, because you have to dismiss it and then decide if you want to manually pull up the report view on the off chance that there IS useful information in it. The rest of the stuff shown here includes some very useful enhancements. The new constraints, for sure.
Those non-intrusive notifications were introduced recently and can be disabled. If you have some ideas for improvements, it’s best to discuss them on the forum.
@@Gumball_W I like the non-intrusive idea. But it's way more important to fix the report view saying "check the report view," and showing nothing further. And yes, I will take it up in the forum as well.
Everybody please setup regular donations to FreeCAD contributors if you can! If everybody paid a tiny amount per month there would be a war chest like Blender has : )
I'm so happy about the new notification system, that window popping up at the bottom and taking up screen real-estate was one of my biggest pet peeves. Now I'm just hoping they can do tangent constraints for B-splines and my life will be complete! Thanks for the video.
As a freecad beginner, I had a “wire not closed” error yesterday, in part design. No matter what I done, I could not get the sketch to work. Then, I deleted the previous pocket, and the pocket I was trying to do worked. Same version as in this vid. Same as any software I reckon, keep practicing to know its quirks. 👍.
Hello there, I am trying to make a library of videos, in case something happens and our videos disappear from you tube, as was seen many time with other videos in the past on YT. But you videos-even though they are free to see - they are not free to download? Or am I doing something wrong, which prevents me?
The videos are available for purchase from my kofi site. RU-vid protects the videos and as a creator they protect us from copywritte and are very strict if they see them appear on other yt channels (I had this problem before and youtube removed the offending channel, this is probably what you have seen before as the process is automatic warning me when they find a copied video reposted) . Don't worry they are not going anywhere and I have them all backed up.
i was looking exactly for this topic "what's new in freecad" which is also a suggestion to include these terms somewhere in ur description to be easily searchable pan videos :)
The latest version that's available through the Raspberry Pi apt get is 0.19. In order to get 0.20, I compiled it from source. Followed the instructions from the website. When it was compiled and installed, to my surprise, it was 0.21. That was early this year. Then I see this in my subscription feed. Now I'm surprised I've been using pre-release software.
I'm a complete beginner with FreeCad. Are there any beginners tutorials that can be started with version 0.21. Or can your older tutorials be safely used without getting confused with any differences between version 0.21 and older versions? Are you planning on updating any tutorials for version 0.21? Thanks.
All the 0.20 series can be safely used and you will see that as you go through the series I move onto 0.21 I am thinking of creating another series to refresh and include in the problems that people have had in the comments. I am currently planning it's structure but fir the mean time the learning freecad series is fine to use. The one major difference is there is not an image workbench anymore and you use the file import.
On Linux with a 4K screen I found that I needed to make a little startup script to get the font size in the GUI correct. ``` exec=/usr/bin/env QT_AUTO_SCREEN_SCALE_FACTOR=0 QT_SCALE_FACTOR=1.25 ./LATEST\ -\ \ FreeCAD_weekly-builds-33345-2023-06-08-conda-Linux-x86_64-py310.AppImage ```
The fact that image work bench was removed and the functionality integrated to the import is just what FreeCad needs to become better. Fewer separate workbenches it has, the better, they often have overlapping or very narrow scopes and work differently and that's counter intuitive and increases the complexity of the software without good reason. When ever you see some functionality overlapping, they should be merged with existing workflows such that there's no real threshold between operations, you're just modelling and using tools and they're all in the same one environment and integrated into one cohesive whole. That's what all the big software are doing, and that's a good thing. It's a tool to get work done, not an arcane magic only chosen ones can understand :)
I totally agree, I run some custom toolbars with everything I need so I don't have to keep flipping backwards and forwards when I do non tutorial work. There is a huge potential to combine certain tools such as, in my view, the shape binder and the sub shape binder or even have some kind of intelligent system where you still have the workbenches but toolbars are share across then all such as draft move, rotate etc. Rhino has a interest additional solution where you can type into a commend box to select a tool to make it more easier to find what you want. I also see some amazing tools in such workbench as the curves and curve surfaces workbench that I hope to see incoperated and can be split across draft and surface. I think that the use of freecad has picked up over the last few years. With the whole vendor lock in and subscription model killing people's wallets and now the availability of more supportive information so I would not be surprised that this subject will be overviewed in the future (fingers crossed)
I am going to switch to Version 0.21 for my videos once I can confirm the "feature freeze" has been set. At that point it should just be bug fixes. I am excited that the next development cycle will include the topo naming issue fixes from Real Thunders branch. - Keep up the good work on these videos Darren.👍
@@Gumball_W I saw they announced they were going to feature freeze but not that it was actually there yet. The blog post said it was imminent. Maybe there's another post that I didn't see.
I had a smile on my face when I saw some of the changes. I'm changing soon as they have announced the feature freeze. And you my friend, loving the back to basics tutorial you are doing by the way. Great work in supporting the community.
Hopefully in some future, yet close release we'll get much better shelling, aka thickness. I have to take my models elsewhere to thicken because that tool, which I understand is not under freecad control, is severely lacking in what it can shell.
With you on that one, can be a right pain. I think this is the video that I put together to get around some of that exact issue, hopefully it will help a bit. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--enJR-OrMJM.html
I hope that after 1.0 they will just switch to years because FreeCAD 2.0, 3.0 and so on won't really fit. FreeCAD 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 would be even worse.
Great video I am really excited about V 0.21. Love the Sketcher changes. Any news on if the topo naming problem is still on the books for this release? 🍻
Toponaming fix will be included in the next version (1.0). They are releasing 0.21 now because the upcoming third phase of toponaming fix code will cause performance issues.
4:39 > _"standalone checkboxes moved to dropdown"_ well, that certainly is bad for both discoverability as well as usability point of view. the auto-constraints checkbox is the one i frequently toggled.
I feel the same, it's an extract unneeded click. I believe you can set them as default in the settings / freecad remembers the last setting but it's nice to have the ability to turn them off and on without opening a extra drop down
@@MangoJellySolutions well, if they keep their development direction like this, then i will have to give up with my liking for freecad... sure the FC interface requires more streamlining - but this is in totally opposite direction. this is not streamlining, this is just plain hiding stuff out without any thought.
Auto Generate Internal geometries. This is the option in Sketcher preferences thats enable the possibility to extrude different pads in the same sketch. Is this function available at 0.21?
Regarding that sweep around the helix, I notice that the profile tends to rotate. Is there some way to keep the bottom of the profile horizontal all the way around or otherwise control the sweep? (So if you stacked several of these spirals the ends would line up.)
Try using the frenet properly and setting it to true or false. Frenet will aligns with tangency. This option is in both part and part design, I believe part design it's called profile orientation. Edit: the freecad document for the sweep actual mentions profile creep on helix and how to solve with frenet wiki.freecad.org/Part_Sweep
Hay sorry to be "THAT GUY" but can you also release videos in 1440P? This is like the only time ive ever complained about this but 1080p tends to be a little bit fuzzy on 1440p. No problem if its not possible its just a small thing
Your looking for marker size in preferences. The are a number of setting that will help out with making things easier to see in freecad. I have a visual disability and wrote about the ones I use here and where to find them (including market size) . mangojellysolutions.blogspot.com/2022/12/settings-and-resources-to-help-with.html
How about the Assembly constraint stability during updating any changes of constraint in release. Is there any new features/functionalities are added for assembly workbench? Though I didn't tested about the functionalities yet. Thanks for your viseo publication.
The Realthunder brings the option to extrude in separate in the same sketch. Probably the most important feature in this version. The new 0.21 don't have this option yet. Am I right MangoJelly?
I tried it but... It has some stability problems. For example I could delete a sketch of a body. Then I couldn't edit the sketch... I would like to use it professionally but it's impossible at this stage. Regarding the assembly 3 module I tried to add an origin (with planes) to the main assembly so I can center everything... I failed successfully. If Realthunder needs help I will more than happy to test stuff.
Well, deleting the sketch used in some operations is not a good idea and will always break the model. Maybe it just should display some error message or delete the operation as well. If you encounter any other bugs, it’s best to disucss them on the forum.
I was following b spline updates this year and they look really good now. I got excited about snapping to objects but tried it, and it doesn't seem to do anything right now.
5:51 Sweep should be done automaticly solid from the start without clicking on Create solid because most of people are doing solid objects anyway. Less clicks you need to make, more approachable software will be to newcomers like myself. There is a lot of UI stuff that needs to be change like we do not need 3 different dimensions buttons, we need only one. We also need a offset in sketcher to offset a line or circle or other shape.
You are right about that solid option enabled by default, I will bring it up on the forum. Regarding dimensioning tools, a versatile one would definitely be useful but it won't be implemented any time soon. Offset is more likely to be added in the near future. Currently, there are a few workarounds for it (including a macro).
I've only been using CAD software for about a year & I like FreeCAD, but what really grates me is if I want to change a dimension somewhere up the tree & the model has fillets or chamfers, it breaks sketches pads pockets etc one after the other. I end up deleting until the problem goes away.
yeah that does annoy me to but instead if i changed the pad height sometimes it would do that as well or when i changed a length on section and then referenced said length (imported it into sketcher) i find it annoying that i need to then re import said line or vertex and re constrain it should i change something before it maybe there is a hidden option for it or i am doing something wrong but would be a nice fix as well as polar arrays in sketcher would also be very nice i know someone working on a macro for that in sketcher.
@@Gumball_W bugging everywhere about this finally pays off, it's not in the settings dialogue, it's in one of the many other 'it's not a bug' places. be nice if these changes, and the way to undo them, could be included in the update notes (that don't exist) displayed in app after an update.
The Tasks tab is pretty bad UI. Large portions of the application's UI and menus are often disabled or do nothing, simply because there's something waiting to be dismissed on the Tasks tab... which may be hidden. So you have no idea what the problem is. This is a de facto modal UI; therefore it should be visible until it is satisfied and dismissed.
@@Gumball_W the of close buttons in all applications are fixed at the bottom and the dialogue box is scrollable. Every cad app has long scrolling dialogues and all of them managed to get it right. Except freecad.
