Our MY 10 Freelander 2's HID lights have gotten weaker in road illumination. My first through was replacing the HID bulbs, which I did. Seconds was to clean the lens on the headlights shown in this vlog and the third I found during the cleaning process. Which I feel is very poor design and other vehicles I found suffer from it also !!!

In Poland there are at least few companies which specializes in metalizing reflectors. You can send it to them and they put mirror-like finish on them. Such service is quite cheap and make huge difference, I paid about 30$ for one reflector and it's worth every cent. I tried to change bulbs, polish headlights, clean them inside, but real difference came from metalizing reflectors. I think you can easily find such service in your country

Thanks Robert good to know for others. I have since sold the Freelander 2. Believe this is a common issue with these type of reflector lamps housings.

Hello great video . I have MY11 HSE and headlights where not performing well I did clean them but not very good as I discovered that the reflectors where burnt so a replacement was pricey and managed to retrofit projectors from China easily. I like the fact that this headlights are easy to work that the new model .

Hi Momed, thanks for the reply, what was the supplier of the projectors and how much were they? As I would be interested to look into that !

Hi Mohamed, I would also like to change the reflectors. Could you please send me a link where I can buy those reflectors? BR Harald

@@joewoodford9428 Hi Joe, the reflectors of my Freelander 2 are also burnt. Did you already solve this problem? (In a rather cheap way) BR Harald

@@guppie1971 Hi Harald, we no longer have the car. Some have mentioned to me using Aluminum heating tape to cover the back reflector. If very badly burnt this might help give some reflection. Sorry not to have the solution !!

Great video, thanks. Did you notice much of a change in nighttime visibility?
@joewoodford9428
@joewoodford9428 4 года назад
Hi DanUK1984, I think a little better though I believe the reflector issue I showed is the main reason the lights were not a bright as new!!! Power design by the manufacture of the lights , not JLRs fault but that of Hella (who I think makes them!!)

very helpful video. Do you need to disconnect the battery before disconnecting the headlight unit power / harness?
@joewoodford9428
@joewoodford9428 3 года назад
Hi RedVin73, I did not. Obviously don’t have the car in a powered on state and make sure if you have Auto headlights that they are off. Once you have unplugged the headlight you can work on them with issue.

@@joewoodford9428 Thanks for the response. Yeah I'll make sure its all off and disconnect. I actually cannot work out what bulb I have, putting in the registration on a car parts site told be the H7 bulbs, so picked them up. I have had the light unit out enough to change the bulb but couldnt see for the life of me how to remove the bulb, and it doesnt look anything like the standard H7 halogen connections and certainly nothing like the D1S xenon type. It is a 2013 Dynamic / Sport. No printed labels on the unit either and the manual just says one or the other. Will have another look tomorrow...

Great video, how do you change the bulb plastic shroud when it’s blown onto the new xenon bulb?
@joewoodford9428
@joewoodford9428 5 лет назад
Hi H2 z, not really to sure what your issue is, are these brand new Xenon bulb you are fitting. Remove of the bulb should be as shown on the video. Though you do not need to take the whole light out to change a bulb.

Hi there, you could put some aluminium tape to the burnt spot so to have back a good amount of reflection. Besides its a smooth surface so it would work good plus the tape wouldnt unstick from heat. Its tested :)
@joewoodford9428

Hi Peter, I looked into ideas as to how to "fix" the issue. A few had mentioned on forums that they had used silver heating tape as these are rated for high temps. I did not try this as I was not sure anyone had any real success. For me it shows a poor design from the lighting manufacture (like Hella, Visteon etc) who supplied to JLR and did not good real world testing! Had you tried aluminum tape?

@@joewoodford9428 . Hello Joe. Yes i have tried that before in worst themperatures. I am a hobist fisherman and i have a metal container which i use to melt lead. That container had a hole and i put aluminium tape to fix it. its more than 9 months now that the tape is still there with no problem. I dont know about the silver heating tape , i havent tried it before. About the reflaction, all those of tapes (aluminium, sliver tape, or even aluminium foil ) i do know that they dont have the perfect reflection behaviour because they create hot spots, the best for no hot spots is the Mylar but i dont know if it comes with glue. Of course those hot spots are bad for plants, i dont think its an issue for the headlights, besides its very tiny spots wont affect the effectivness of headlights so much.

Did this not affect the headlight alignment?
@joewoodford9428
@joewoodford9428 3 года назад
Minor off alignment, I used my garage door and marked in chalk the low beam profile before removal. Once replaced the headlight I move it around to match using the screws that hold the headlight to the car in place. If worried a garage can properly adjust.

Hm, this makes perfect sense. I'll screw out the lights tomorrow and see if it is burned too. Anyone knows if a new reflector can be ordered? I'm not gonna faf around with aluminium/aluminium spray/adhesives etc. That's a recipe for problems imho.

How can I do this without taking the headlight out? These nissans are difficult to work on.
@joewoodford9428
@joewoodford9428 4 года назад
Sorry not sure about a Nissan. Without taking out the head light it is almost impossible to get access to the reflector or lens. Most HID reflectors have a moving shutter [High/Low beam] and this could get in the way or damaged if you don't have full access to the reflector unit on the bench.
