Great Videos , I sold my 110csw last year ,kinda regretting it still .But not when i now visit the fuel station my car can do 50 plus MPG & £30 .00 road tax -Volvo . but your videos is a trip down memory lane Cheers Joel
Holy shit that "Bomb Hole" looked like a piece of cake for your FL. Whenever people laugh at me when I tell them my FL2 (even though almost stock) is quite powerful offroad I'll just point them to this video and laugh. Great video!
I am quite taken by the freelander 2 . I have hade defenders and just got the feelander 2 for the wife, never paid it any attention. Defender got nicked and now driving the freelander 2 alot . Really impressed . That impressed I thinking stuff the defender and just lift the freelander and mud tyres. I think it will go anywhere a defender will with terrain responce
Absolutely William! (Sorry to hear the Defender was stolen though!) I have a Series 2a 109, a 'proper' offroader, and yet I'd agree the FL2 will go all the same places pretty much! 👍
Great video. Just replaced my rear wheel bearing and anti roll bar links on Friday, so looking to get on some of the lanes down here in Devon today in my FL2!
Some pretty iconic lanes there buddy. I'm not too far away, if your ever up this way again. Do give me a shout, I'd love to tag along with some other Freelanders.
good video bud, longer than normal which is so much better Strata looks great, will try and get up there myself soon before it gets ruined. . . Didn't fancy doing the bomb hole downhill then?
Ah Im so glad to hear you liked it Tim! You prefer the longer video format hey? ...me to, to be fair! I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the feedback 😁👍 I'll save doing the bombhole downhill for a day when water levels are higher (makes sence to do strata the oposite way in those instances so that you're working with the current rather than against it!)
Cracking vehicle. Do the FL2 seats fold completely flat for sleeping? What’s the sleeping length? Looking at FL2’s for the odd night away and adventures
Cracking video. What was the difference in lift or clearance between the FL2's ? Expect a standard one would be stopped or stuck on that trail at some point.
Thanks for your question Richard! Both FL2's shown in this video are lifted, Gary's Black one has a 35mm Front and 45mm rear lift from MuddyMods. Mine is sporting not just a 40mm front lift and 50mm rear but also oversized mud terrain tyres which provide about 30mm more all round too - meaning I sit about 70mm front and 80mm rear in total. Stock FL2's have driven Strata but from what I've seen and heard they have avoided the big obstacles (such as the bomb-hole and deep water crossings) and have needed LOTS of spotting to make it through the rest of the lane! It's doable but would be much harder work than in these modified rigs. I hope that helps! 😁👍🚜
Great video - the lanes and scenery look absolutely amazing. I've got a stock 14 plate SD4 XS Freelander and want to get involved in trips like this. What items would you recommend as being the first set of upgrades when I've got £2k to spend?
Thanks Stuart! 👍 First thing to equip yourself with is thankfully free, and thats a whole load of knowledge. Join us in the Freelander 2 OffRoad Group on Facebook and you'll have a wealth of experience and knowledge at your fingertips! There are also some really excellent folks out there running regular events and meets for the group across the country! Infact we have a group meet that Im running at a quarry here in the south west of england at the end of the month, if you're keen then details are on this link (please bare in mind this particular event is a paid one, however there are many free events hosted regularly!) joelselfoutdoorinstructor.weebly.com/fl2org-shop.html Now, down to the meat of it, actual upgrades and modifications... obviously there is an almost limitless amount of things that coulf be done however I think you'll find these few bits tackle the FL2's more noticeable vulnerabilities. • Fuel Tank Gaurd • Engine / Bumper Lip Gaurd • All terrain Tyres (inc full size spare) • Upgraded bulbs • Some form of Led bar / spot lights Feel free to quiz me on why those bits but hopefully thats a good little list to consider. Obviously the likes of a lift kit etc are appealing but dont feel you NEED that immediately. 👍🚜
Is the black one all standard Love your videos mate.what size tyre are you running and the black standard looking freelander2. I know yours has a lift but is the black one all i
Nice video Joel. Looking forward to booking myself a slot with you on a future trip. Especially after I have some work done on the FL2 😁 I'll bring the drone along with some extra footage for you 😏
Hi Joel, bit random but did you do a video of changing the interior light to a new style from a Mondeo, if so did you manage to get the ambient lights working
might be crazy to ask but how did you get the back seat all the way down, I've got a 2008 lr2 with leather seats and I feel that premium might of killed the fully folding back seat.
Hi Kevin, with the seat in its normal position slide your hand between the bottom panel and the back rest. Pull upward on the bottom panel and it will unclip and fold forward into the footwell. Remove the head rest from the back rest. Press the button on the top outer edge of the backrest. Fold the backrest forward into a flat position. I hope that helps! 😁👍🚜
This video is pushing me towards a Freelander 2... Thank you! Just a question: in order to sleep in the back, do you have to move the seat? I'm planning to create a "mild" overlanding LR and that would be nice to know!
Hi @crazydrummer03 Thanks for your question. I dont have to move the seat to sleep in the back no, myself and my better half often live out of the landy together on trips so it can comfortably sleep 2 in the back and still carry all that you need for a few weeks away. 👍
Nice setup you have in the back of the Freelander. Did you, by any chance, measure the space with the rear seats folded? I'm thinking of buying one myself.
Thanks for the Question Cristian I normally have a much more luxurious set up when I go on longer trips as it happens. Sadly I haven't measured it no, if I remember tomorrow morning I'll try and do that for you. 👍
Hi Joel Me again. lol Quick ? again. Do you not carry a spare tyre on your FL2? I suppose it could be under the vehicle but not sure your custom setup would fit if that is the case.
Hi Richard! I don't carry a spare at the moment, no. I've been trying to sort one out but at this stage I go wuthout. 👍 I'd rather have one but space, budgets and time haven't been a luxury I've had recently to get a new tyre and rim sorted.
Great trails there. So how does the Freelander feel without low range, in this occasion would you need it or it does not seem like abusing the transmission? Thanks.
Thanks for the question Codrvr! There is alot to unpack with this topic and a youtube comment might not do it justice so the short answer is the Freelander 2's gearing is great for this type of offroad use and really it doesn't feel laboured at all. Combine the auto-box, terrain response and the HDC and you've got quite the package! She'll go pretty much wherever you point her. 👍 To really delve into this why not join us in the Freelander 2 OffRoad Group over on Facebook! 👍
I have just become the proud owner of a freelander 2🎉 is there any mods n must haves that you can suggest? Being from norfolk there is nothing too scary. Kindest regards
Im running oversized 245/75/17 Mud Terrains but they are alot of work to fit. A fair few folks seem to fit 245/65/17 if you want an easier upgrade. 👍 Feel free to join us in the Freelander 2 OffRoad Group on Facebook, there is a wealth of experience and knowledge in the group! 😁👍 facebook.com/groups/354952682390021/?ref=share_group_link
Thanks for the question, @busterSTIG! All specs of FL2 come with 4wd yes but the base spec doesn't have selectable terrain response settings - meaning the system on those vehicles is purely reactivate rather than being able to configure it in advance of getting onto the rough stuff. (My vehicle does have the Terrain Response system.) Difflocks - anything is possible with enough funds but to this point no, I dont know of anyone who's fitted difflocks to a FL2. Its not really needed though as lifting wheels doesn't have the effect it would on more traditional 4wd's - the terrain response system applies the breaks to any lifted wheel and the power is instead diverted to the other wheels that do have traction. As such difflocks in the traditional sense probably are not the modifications to at first consider. I hope that helps. Feel free to join us in the Freelander 2 OffRoad Group over on Facebook if you have more questions, ideas and queries! 😁👍🚜
Hi @TitusPullo A stock FL2 would be able to do these lanes on the most part yes (you'd have to give the bomb-hole on strata a miss for example) but without a tank gaurd etc you would be VERY susceptible to damage, it would take a much slower and more cautious drive than we did - but yes its certainly achievable if you have the time and technical skill to navigate that terrain with a spotter or two to guide your way. 👍
I would have continued watching this, but youtube's war on adblockers has kicked in after refreshing from trying to skip a pointless advert for feminine products (I'm definitely not in need of them!) and it again thinks I have an adblocker, so sorry, I won't be watching any more of your videos for a while, I quite enjoyed what I have watched of it. Might "see" you in a few months.
Hi Amuzz Im afraid the group exclusively exists on Facebook, though we do have merch available to anyone over at: joelselfoutdoorinstructor.weebly.com/fl2org-shop.html Sorry I can't be of more help.
