You're best yet.Bloody awesome and enjoyed every second of your adventure. You're an inspiration ,thank you..Quite strange seeing you all 'Rabbed' up in your kit but in my opinion ,quality pays and in the long run saves money.I think i'll watch this again as it was so good..Stay safe and 'cheese' !!........
Haha. Yea, I do seem to be swamped in Rab gear at the moment. Still have lots of budget products to use throughout the year though. Cheers for watching. Glad that you enjoyed it.
It was very touching hearing you talk about how Dartmoor has changed for you over the years. I feel like we’ve both been on a journey discovering the moor. I can’t believe it’s only been 4.5 years since I first visited. I lost count how many days I’ve been there and how many wild camps I’ve done. I was there last month completing my Hill and Moorland Leader award through Mountain Training and now my sights are set on the mountains so I can get my Mountain Leader award. Thanks for making the videos you do. Like you I started with stuff from Go outdoors and now it’s all MSR, Rab and Mountain Equipment.
That's awesome, Ben. Hope that your Mountain Leader award goes really well. I know what you mean about losing track of the times on the moor. Since its in my doorstep I seem to have got to know it really well, well... the North at least. Thanks for watching!
Nice video. I bet you was very glad to see the sun in the morning. Your kit has changed somewhat now since your first videos. You don't get better than anything Rab I'm a great fan of theirs. 😂😂😂
YEa - all Rab'd up in this one. Nice to give their gear a try out, I shouldnt think that the sleeping bag will be out with me much more over the summer months though - I'd sweat like a pig. Really enjoyed this camp though, and glad that you enjoyed the video. Cheers!
I've watched the first half and I have to say I really like what I'm seeing. Hiking and camping like the old days but with confidence and even better film making. Good job Trev.
Linda and I out on the moor today coming down via Black Tor when she says "Isn't that Trev's dip?". So we've watched this again - and it was indeed "Trev's dip"!
Great video, thanks. Especially liked it as it seems there aren't a lot of videos of tarp/bivvy camping on Dartmoor, most other people seem to go with conventional tents (even RU-vidrs who in other videos of theirs would normally be tarp camping). I had wondered if there was some sort of unwritten rule that for more challenging places like Dartmoor a tarp was considered a bit sub par? I much prefer tarp camping to tent camping, and had hoped to do one on Dartmoor some time this year, so this was encouraging to see.
Ive done a three or four tarp camps up on the moor before now, I think many people just prefer the tents, but I like to have a bit of a mix up. This was a good time to test my new rab bag and bivvy too, so made sense. Toasty in that kit! Cheers for watching!
One of the reasons bivi used to be more popular was because it was the ultralight way, but now we have plenty of tents that are ultralight, so the benefits of a bivi have diminished compared to a tent. A good bivi still has the benefit over a tent in warmth.
I was part of a 10 Tors training team in the Royal Navy back in the 80s. I haven’t been back in decades. This video has inspired me to head west and get some miles in again. Thanks. :)
That was a boss call for the pitch. If rain/snow had fallen I'm sure it wouldn't have pooled in the dip and you could have moved the bivvie to the lip in emergency. Top trip
God I miss all the walks in Dartmoor, Exmoor, and along the SW coast, so many fond memories and experiences. Watching your adventures warms my heart since now I am so far away from the beautiful SW, wish one day I will return and hike all the routes again.
Hi Trev, this was a great little film. The DD 3m tarp set up is a favourite of mine as its so easy and works well. I have been subscribed to you for a while now as I never seemed to be able to get out in the way I wanted to so I looked to you for inspiration and planning. Unfortunately I was involved in a horrible accident at the beginning of the year and lost my right leg so I wont be getting out hiking or camping for a couple of years now, if ever. only time will tell. keep it up mate and I will live vicariously through your adventures for a bit until I can have some of my own. Thanks!
Hi Paul. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. It must be heavy breaking and a struggle to come to terms with. However, that being said, many people do find a fight within themselves during such traumatic and devastating changes in their lives. You often hear of people achieving so much with prosthetic limbs, so I hope that you can eventually get back to some normality. In the meantime though, I am glad that ypu have been enjoying our videos, and stay tuned this weekend as we have a bit of exciting news that although not as ideal as actually getting out there yourself, may be even better for you.... its all a little enigmatic I know buy hopefully by Sunday all will be revealed. Anyway, take care, sir, I hope that your position improves, and thanks again for watching and getting in touch. Cheers!
@@SummitOrNothing Hi Trev. Thanks for the kind words. I hope to get back out there with a prosthetic sometime in the future. I am a search and rescue volunteer and if I can ever get back on an live search, then I will know I am back properly. Keep it up mate.
That was a really long but very beautiful video. Watched all of it and enjoyed all of it! 🤩You were lucky with the weather and it must be like a dream to walk in such beautiful environments and in such fantastic weather. I am still surprised how much gear you can stuff into a 40 odd litres pack, but it is obviously possible 😄 Thank you for sharing! 😃
Hi Torunn. Yes the weather was superb. A bit crisp in the morning but fine when you have the right gear. I still surprise myself that I can fit it all in that small backpack. Thanks for watching!
Always enjoyable to watch your videos. I love the mix of information and history that you throw in, and it's always no-nonsense and humorous. Thanks for taking us along with you.
Great video Trev, stunning scenery and informative. So many channels are just short walk, packet food, review/plug and short walk back. You add humour and do some proper decent hikes 👍 Just had my first wild camp last weekend, inspired by yourself and Nath but at 60+ underestimated the cold a bit! Nice and snug in a sleeping bag but as soon as you need a pee omfg! 😅 Loved the experience though. Never underestimate the effect of the cold on the extremities, it makes cooking and handling of equipment immensely difficult. Keep em coming mate, one day soon will be coming down to dartmoor, best place on the planet, but then Im biased lol
Haha... yea it does get cold out in the open. E collect that tou got out for it though. Nothing quite like camping on a cold night! Thanks very much for watching! Cheers!
I really enjoyed watching this one. Great weather you had, apart from the cold. I can't believe it was almost 50 years ago I was last on Dartmoor doing Ten Tors.
what a fantastic video ,i take my hat off to you .absolutly absorbing video one of your best ill probably watch it many times like i do with all your camping videos ,well done great work
aaaaaah mate!!! brilliant video Trev , and one of your comments really rings home with me and that`s "the moor feels smaller somehow" , the more i explore the smaller the place seems to get , and i really wish it didn`t . And yes , i was shocked in go outdoors the other week when i saw my Lev900 for 160 quid!! think i payed 99quid less than a year ago now!!
Great video Trev, 👍 currently on the Isle of Wight……. I happened to of slipped my bivvy gear in the car……. After watching this I’m definitely out tonight! Thanks for the inspiration! ⛺️
Superb video Trev, sterling work, keep it up! Was at the Tors/Shed last Sat, bloody lovely pint after a quick blast around the Tors nearby! Happy Days.
I’ve just discovered your channel. Some great videos thank you. Dartmoor is on my doorstep too so looking forward to getting some tarp camping done this year.
Great video Trev. Your channel gets better and better. Really enjoying your solo adventures. It was great to see a tarp being used in those conditions. Enjoyed every minute. Stay safe 🔥
Thank you very much, Kenneth. Really enjoyed both getting out and then putting this one together so really glad that you liked it so much. Thanks for watching
Hi Trev, thanks as always for your latest instalment. Loved everything about it! And, what a great track to walk. You covered a lot of my favourite tors too 👊. I liked your review of Outdoor Active, most helpful. Beautiful filming and editing too Trev, as always. As always, I look forward to your next film matey. Take care, cheers Pete
That’s a cracking little route 👍 Your best video yet I reckon, maybe carry less water then fill up at the river. Really enjoyed that. More like that please 👍👍
I'm late to the party, only just seen your uploads. Great content, good knowledge and advice. Plus the kit demo. I will not be buying into top range gear, but I am kitting up ready to go, so I appreciate good input. 😎😎
Hi Jim. Thanks for the comment (sorry for late reply sometimes comments slip through the net). Glad that you enjoy the channel and thanks ever so much for watching. Hope that you have managed to get out for your own adventures through out the summer. I agree that you don't need to buy top end to enjoy yourself outdoors, whether hiking or camping, especially through the summer months. I must admit though that forking out a little during winter has been beneficial though, especially my down bags and I would say the sleeping pad has been a game changer. But, that being said, I did it for years without spending the dollar.
Great stuff Trev, always happy to see a longer video, it gives me something to look forward to. Cracking little set-up that Trev, really enjoyed the whole video, its back to the paper map then 🤷♂............never been to Dartmoor and love to hear your commentary of everything in view and thoughts of your surroundings.........loved it mate.........ATB....Stu....👍👌.
Cheers Stu! Really glad that you enjoyed this one. It was a great vit of fun, and a route I've wanted to do for ages. I know this area pretty well by now, need to get back up the mountains ASAP I reckon. Cheers for watching!
Nice one trev scratched my dartmoor itch proper 👍 Top tip....on your watch if you start the hiking activity you can then hold the center left button you can start navigation whist inside the hiking activity. This way you get a load more interesting data fields to look at 👍 Really enjoying this vid 👍👍
Blimey! A bivvy camp at this time of year, very brave. It's blooming cold at present. I can't wait for the summer months to arrive. Good effort thou. xx
Cheers Rachel. Was a good test of the new gear. Was cold outside, but snug as a bug in my bag. Am looking forward to the warmer weather though. Thanks for watching! Hope you're still enjoying your own adventures!
This is my favorite video you shared, I am hoping to do a camp with my aquaquest safari 10x10 tarp and aquaquest pharaoh bivy in sub-zero temperatures here in Nova Scotia, Canada. Tarptent setup is one of my favourite tarp setups.
Thanks very much, it's one of my favourite videos too. There is certainly something about tarp camping in the cold weather. Strangely, I don't much feel like partaking in it this year though. I'm sure that will change soon though. Thanks again for watching, atb!
Absolutely brilliant! Lots of nostalgia! Yes tor was my first ever tor just before I was 13 with army cadets. 1983 been hooked ever since! Really enjoyed this one! You made me giggle when you stood on the top and said “I’m not going to give it one” haha Did you stick with boots, as I remember you might have been turned to trainers a while ago? Keep the vids coming Trev! 👍🏻
Hi Arron. How ya doing? This is a great area, loads of tors to hop feom one to the other. Love it. I do often wear trainers, especially along the coast path, even on Dartmoor in drier weather. To be fair I could have worn some here, but I wore my Solomon boots, which are much lighter than my leather boots. Cheers for watching!
Great walk and tarp , really enjoyed that one :) everytime I plan to go tarp i always bottle it, maybe this years the year ! 🤣, such a beautiful place Dartmoor , you've just reminded me how awesome the place is ! 👍😃
Yea - the tarp was a bit of a late thing for me, but there is something about being open to the elements that make it appealing. Being able to see out helps, and lying just looking up at those stars was something else. You should definitely give it a go. Surprising how room this set up is too using the 3x3 tarp.
@@SummitOrNothing u need to take ur next patreon group to the shed out back where they do the burgers from.... classic SoN vid there.. been waiting for you to do the 2day-ers...hoping the next one you do with "off the beaten pot" will be the same so he can get you doing some bangin breakfast on the trangia to set u up for day 2 :)
Nah, you chose the right week Trev. Gives your gear a good test. I’m typing this at the beginning however. You should stay toasty in your RABs. On with the vid ✨👊🏼✨
RU-vid just eating my comments for fun lol, I'm not the only hungry one tonight! Loving the video so far Trev, quick Q...Watching along with our dinner, as is Summit or Nothing Sunday tradition, we were wondering about the hiking app you used, Outdoor Active, does if have a subscription or charge? We miss veiwranger, Cawood has been dire! Intrigued about this one 🤔 🧭🗺📱 Love how this works with your Garmin too! ⌚ ❤ ☕
Yea - you do have to subscribe - there are two tiers of paying subscription - I'm on the middle one. Also, any maps you owned on Viewranger move across too. I'm really happy with it to be honest!
@@SummitOrNothing magic, thanks Trev, loved your reflection on the early days hiking with Nath, funny how the Moor doesn't seem do big now, more like you back yard. Glad you had a great walk, Kat thinks the lizard was like likely a wall lizard 🦎 ❤ they are around on Darty ⛰❤🏴👍 have a great week, Ceri and Kat ☕ 🧭
@@SummitOrNothing I'm hoping to get my first Dartmoor wild camp video up with my mate after our camp in late April. Your channel has been the main inspiration for that so thank you.
One of your best videos yet. 👏👍 Good prompt to dust my 3x3 off and go light. I've recently bought the 30l version of your rucksack. Itching to see if I can can fit everything I need in it. ATB, John.
Great vid Trev. Looked like you enjoyed it also. Nice little bivvi set up and glad it didn't hammer down for ya. RAB 600 sounds like a good purchase... got a birthday coming up 😂🤣 ...like that part of the Moor, and defo easy to navigate with good vis. Looking forward to the next one 😎👍
Cheers Chris. I definitely feel I have done this section of the moor to death by now, but yea, I enjoyed it. The Rab gear did a great job of keeping me toasty on a bloody cold night. Definitely one to remember.
Yea, you could be right about the cold air, I must get a thermometer at some point too and check things like that. Hope to see Nath at some point, he's been unavailable for a whole now. The show must go on though.
Another great video, that walk up to Widgery cross from the car park is a killer. Bivi camping is a great experience done 3 over winter around South Devon but will be using the tent up on Dartmoor this week I think as taking the lightweight sleeping bag and th e protection from the wind really makes a diffrence. Out of interest how do you find the bag? Thinking of spending a little and upgrading the eurohike bag. Cheers for all the videos and the effort that goes into them.
Yea that hill took it right out of me. Actually my pace was down for the majority if the walk, but I don't do this to race anyway. Are you asking about the bivvy or the sleeping bag. I was kept warm and dry throughout the night so I guess they both do their job well. Te bivvy is impressive that it packs down smaller than a pack a mac. Cheers for watching!
Tarp bivvy is fine when there are no ticks and no midges. In those temps your sleep mat and sleep bag/bivvy combo will be key to comfort. That software looked ideal for planning and on the ground as backup to paper mao, compass.
Cheers Jimmy. Yea there are plenty of ticks on Dartmoor (so far I haven't discovered any). And I have to agree with you that I perhaps wouldn't have enjoyed this caml as much in my old set up. The sleeping pad and down bags have made those winter nights far more enjoyable. Thanks for commenting and sorry about the late reply.
Really enjoyed that episode and looking forward to the walk in May as well. Down on Dartmoor over Easter so may incorporate some of that route again.....
Another very well presented video Trevor .. most enjoyable to watch, especially tucked up in a warm bed with a cuppa. I've always fancied the idea of trying a bivi camp, on the face of it, the weight saving could be great, but as you have done, by the time you add the tarp and the two poles it's probably no saving at all .. anyway, the tent seems a lot more cosy. It looks as if you and Rab are going to be best buddies .. you were always the budget kinda guy ... you would think you'd been to a Rab factory recently. 😁
Haha... yea, all the Rab gear. The waterproof coat is what I purchased on offer on the way up, so I wasn't completely Rabless, the bivvy purchased in Feb as mentioned in the video. Probably won't need to pack the winter down bag and jacket much more if the weather finally warms up, but great to know I have winter gear to rely on. Cheers for watching!
Enjoyed this one Trev as with all your videos - me and wife visited Black tor and used the flat rock just to back of your tarp as our kitchen 👍😁 was tough going under foot to get there and both thought it would be much better once ‘they’ had cut the grass - any idea what time of year they head out with the mowers Trev? 😬🤔
Fantastic vid as always, nothing better than thinking up an adventure and getting on and doing it. I did the WR bivvy out, first time using a bivvy as well, think I would have preferred it in the summer tbh but you got to try these things eh! Cheers for giving me a couple more places to add to my Dartmoor must visit ticklist 👍
Yea - I reckon they could smash the record if attempted in july. Was a shame to have missed it though. Thanks for watching! Glad that you enjoyed it! Cheers!
Thanks Liz. Was a great route, went a little awry down by Meldon, but really enjoyed it apart from that. I don't mind the cold, it's cold and wet thats not so fun!
Awesome video Trev! Looked like a helluva hike. Cool tarp tent too. .. also listened to your movie pod cast (star wars) I'm with you on that one! Prefer sequels over prequels for same reasons. Though the clone wars/rebels have some fantastic storytelling in later seasons. .. ps, couldn't find the volume button on the podcast doohickey
Hi Micky, thanks so much for watching (and listening). Is a decent little tarp set up, is that, and that dip made it so much more spacious. Loved it, cheers!
Great video, your knowledge of the moor shining through. I see you were "all Rab'd up! You mentioned about rain pooling in the dip, wouldn't cold air do the same?
That is a valid point, I didnt think much about to be honest. I was lovely and toasty down there though all well. Rather cold than wet. Cheers for watching!
The tarp is surprisingly enjoyable, especially having the gear to go with it and keep you toasty. You should definitely aim to get on the North Moor for a camp. It's bloody awesome.
Hi Steve. I guess you can follow Summit or Nothing in Outdoor Active... I know I use to have followers over at Viewranger, not had a close look at the new app though, if I'm honest!
