The yellow dates you reviewed earlier were probably of the barhi variety, while these may be from the zaghloul or hayani varieties. Both are in the stage of ripeness known as khalal (done accumulating sugars but still crisp), whereas more familiar varieties like medjoul, deglet noor, khudri, halawi, etc., are sold in the tamr stage (ripened until soft [basically overripe, also called rutab], then allowed to dry or 'cure' until shelf-stable).

Fresh red dates are my favorite. You are right, the red ones are more fruity compared to the yellow variety. We eat them here in the middle east especially when in season. They don't require any preparation prior to eating aside from washing them thoroughly. I love your channel by the way.

When i was in egypt, we were given these everyday for breakfast. I love fresh dates so much but i hate going through the dillema of eating a freshly picked date which has the awesome crunch to it, or the somewhat older date which is not that crunchy, nor bitter tho.

Back home in Sudan we use to eat them all the time. Here I use the dry ones to make ice cream and use it in smoothies as well to avoid using sugar

The 'Medjool' is a variety of Phoenix dactylifera. There are a lot of different varieties all with different colored fruit
@I.amthatrealJuan
@I.amthatrealJuan 6 лет назад
I'm not an expert but that indeed looks like a Medjool based on the size and seed shape. A great fruit, though Tamar ones are a bit too sweet for my palatte. One time my uncle sent a package with dates from the Middle East. The shipment was delayed and when it reached us all of the dates had a sweet yet alcoholic taste, adding an exotic twist. We still deemed it edible because none of us got drunk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Oh and can you make a "That's not Coffee" with date seeds? I heard it can be used as a coffee substitute.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 6 лет назад
I did an episode on it before the thats not coffee series. It didn't turn out well though, I'm planning to try it again later on with a commercial variety.

god, i wish i could eat fresh dates, in my coutry i can find only dried
@doodbool3719
@doodbool3719 6 лет назад
You can eat it raw. We do it all the time here. There is a type that is dried and looks completely black and wrinkly called A'jwa. Its sweet and has chocolaty aftertaste. You should try it when you can.
@marcjohn9404
@marcjohn9404 6 лет назад
Yeah, dried dates are how we eat them usually in the states. They're all over the place in their dried form. Never had them, so I'm kind of interested actually. I imagined they tasted a lot like grapes just because when they're dried they look like a giant raisin.
@aphr0d

mans never stops surprising. I sometimes think we made some baked foods just to replicate the flavors of fresh fruits that we could only savor for brief periods in certain regions.

These will bedelicious when ripened slowly untill they become inbetween fresh and dried dates, very soft and juicy and sweet and fresh at the same time

This is the first time that I have ever seen a date that sounds like an apple is being eaten. I thought that the dates bought at grocery stores that are really sweet and used in cookies were the way they come. Boy, was I wrong! Now I wish I could try what you just tried without leaving the country. Wait...you bought them in East LA? I'm in NC.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 6 лет назад
Might be tricky to get them in NC, but there are a few companies that ship fresh dates if you don't mind the shipping costs :/

indeed they are extremely tasty and sugary! so the variety you tried is called zaghloul dates, which have a bit of an interesting and funny story to it... so basically, here in Egypt in the 1910's, there was an ongoing independence movement lead by leader sa'ad zaghloul that advocated for the independence of Egypt from the British empire, so when the British exiled zaghloul to the Seychelles, they banned the folk from saying his name completely, so the name "balah zaghloul" (zaghloul's dates) started being used to refer to the exclusively Egyptian species... we make a lot of things out of it, from making them overripe (the one you tried later in the vid) to drying them, and juice too. glad you liked it!
@arabposters
@arabposters 6 лет назад
Yellow date species common name is Barhi ( the ones you’ve tried in previous video) , it’s origin is Iraq . And this species ( the red dates) is the largest type ( the longest) , called Zaglool , it’s origin is Egypt . The dried one is called ( deglat noor) originates from Morroco . ( some date species are suitable to be dried like ( majhool ) often we call it suloogi,( because it’s boiled with hot water and then dried)

Have you had fresh chestnuts before? They're a "famine food' here and I eat them sometimes in my grandma's house. They have a nice carroty crunch, maybe a little more, but not too much of a bitterness and it's not astringent
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 6 лет назад
My parents would buy them to roast when I was little and I'd always eat a few raw. carroty is a good way to describe it

You can eat the red and the yellow fresh dates like every other fresh fruit, there are literally 10s of different species of dates, same like apples, the Arabs have a name for every kind of date.

They r totally fine to eat and they r eaten like this in the middle east. . Better than yellow dates, that's true! To get it sweeter u have to pick them dark red with a little bit of darker spots like the ripe one u ate later in the video. Ava only in early September with the Nairooz season - Coptic calendar- then they ripe so that's why they r not so famous in the US. Super good. . Enjoy!

There are red dates which are sweeter than the yellow and there are yellow dates if not mature to a point where it gets a bit soft the astringency will have you crawling on the floor looking for water. I had around 5 varieties of date palms in my garden now I have only 3 palms of 2 variety . Khalas and khenaizi
@MohdAradi
@MohdAradi 6 лет назад
oh I forgot, the astringency in dates goes away when they starts to ripen . even the highly astringent ones are good when they are half and half.

They don''t last very long they start the fermentation the moment they are picked. There is one variaty in Egypt that is almost the size of italian plum (and tastes like one with ton of sugar) they last longer and they sell them fresh.

pfft. there are well over a thousand banana varieties and the majority of them are better tasting than the cavendish. It may be possible that there isn't one that has a similar taste but high shelf life.
