There are several different ways to cook Shredded Hash Browns and it all just depends on how you like to eat them. Restaurants serve them up differently everywhere you go. Some people like them flat and formed into a pancake like patty and others like them loose and fluffy. Personally I'll eat them either way but I prefer the ladder. In this recipe, I prepare them Loose and fluffy but I'm going to tell you how to cook the patty style too. Believe it or not, the secret all boils down to water. Couple things. 1) instead of the par boil, ive had success microwaving a full plate of shredded potatoes for 3 min. This not only par cooks it but it reduces moisture in them setting up a nice crunch when finished in the pan. 2) potatoes can take a lot more seasoning than salt and pepper. I like oregano, garlic and onion powder and sometimes cayanne. 3) i like my hash browns crunchy. Id recommend 7min per side and one flip.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. I love the microwave but to this very day, with over 500 video recipes shared here on RU-vid, I haven't once used the microwave in any of them because it's kind of a no-brainer. It doesn't take any skill to use one, most anyone, if not everyone, already knows how to use it and what they can use it for. But you are right and that is a great idea. Thank you

Well, I have learned a lot about hash browns, that is for sure. I confess, mine have always come out of a bag from the market. The real thing is definitely worth doing. The only change I'd make is to cook those a little more to a "crispy" stage. GREAT!

With prices going up, I re-thinking buying expensive hashbrowns from a bag to just taking time to do it myself from a potatoe.

Great tip about getting rid of excess starch. I peel and boil the whole potato, then cool it down a bit, then let it get cold in the refrigerator over night. (Usually enough for 2-3 days) Next I shred enough for the size portion of hash browns I want and fry till golden brown. I’ve found that putting a few pats of butter on top of the potatoes and letting it melt through gives that extra boost to get the potatoes golden brown. I cook them Low and Slow and it takes around 20-25 minutes to get the results I like. I also like to spice them up a bit with powdered garlic, onion powder, and a good sprinkle of red pepper flakes. Top them off with a big ladle of spicy homemade sausage gravy and I’m ready to enjoy. Thanks for all of your great recipes and the extra effort you put into the editing. That effort makes your instructional videos a pleasure to watch as well as your wonderful announcer type voice. Well done!!!

Yeah that's another great way to make them, boiled or baked even. It's a concept I want to film and show in another video because potato shreds that have been cooked, all the way through, can be frozen. And I'd like to show everyone, who doesn't already know, how to make Frozen Shredded Hash Browns. Thanks for your comment, Tim.

The "Par-Boil" is important because it helps to cook the potato all the way through. An alternative to this recipe is grating already baked or boiled, and refrigerated, potatoes. Those potato shreds can be frozen too.

So do I need to blanche the hashbrowns before I place them in the oven. I have potatoes I want to use up and want to make a breakfast casserole? But not sure if they will cook thoroughly. Thank u so much in advance.

After par boiling the shredded potatoes, have you ever tried to use a salad spinner to help remove water from the potatoes before cooking them?

No, but that's a great idea. I did just buy a new mop and bucket with the salad spinner idea attached to it, though. It works great to ring out the water on that thing. 😂 🍻

You have to bake your potatoes, just like making a baked potato. Then shred, bag and freeze!
