Frey’s Syndrome is a syndrome that includes sweating while eating and facial flushing. It is caused by injury to a nerve, typically after surgical trauma to the parotid gland.
Frey’s Syndrome is thought to occur in all patients who have parotid surgery without reconstructive surgery. Symptoms may vary in severity and usually only patients with severe symptoms seek treatment.
For permanent treatment, reconstructive surgery is the only option. In experienced hands, surgery has the added benefit of being able to reduce facial scars from incisions and correct facial deformities from the initial surgery.

I had a patroidectomy in November 2019 from a ENT Surgeon here and he said no nerves were sacrificed. I continueI to feel numbness . It seems to feel better each month. I am wandering if I will get 100% of the feeling. After listening to your report on Freye Syndrome i am happy i do not have those symptoms. Thank you for your explanation and it really helps me feel like I am not alone. If you have any advice I would appreciate it so much.

For the longest time I thought this was normal. I had surgery as a baby to remove a lump or tumour in my neck that damaged my left facial nerve. I sweat on my left cheek whenever I eat or even when thinking of eating. Thanks for sharing.

I have freys syndrome after a parotedectomy 30 years ago. It was really bad at first and has lessened somewhat over the years but I still have it. It is low behind my ear and jaw. Especially when I have sour food like sour kraut or sour candy. It’s not bad enough to get surgery for it. I did lose feeling in my earlobe though because my surgeon sacrificed that nerve to have better access. I’m ok with that. It was 30 years ago. I’m just glad it never returned.

How can one pin point Frey's? I am 5'4, 130 lbs and live in Brazil, which is hot (though I have lived here for 20 years and didn't have a problem before) I am almost 45 and could be starting menopause I have Polycystic Kidney Disease, though my renal functions seems normal still. I have had severe dental problems due to grinding my teeth. I mean to say severe as in; I have had all my wisdom teeth pulled, no early warning I have a cavity/no pain until cavities get to the point of pulpal necrosis and/or infection, 7 root canals, infections in root canaled teeth to the point of extraction and 5 implants that do get infection once in a while. Because of all these dental problems I have had multiple infections that hurt to the jaw and neck area. I sweat mostly after eating, don't have a good imagination (I've failed at previous attempt at biofeedback for Acrophobia) so thinking about food when not really hungry only triggers on thinking of "warhead" type candy Is Frey's my problem or is my sweating just coincidentally connected to eating?.

Don't sweat it!! It started with me about a year after my parotedectomy. The ENT told me that it was unusual to see it that long after surgery. I thought I had a lymph node leak and it freaked me out. In my case it is not painful or otherwise concerning. I am going on 8 yrs with this and it is only slightly annoying.

Hey doc. I have never had any surgery but I sweat and feel warmth on my right side of the face when I eat certain foods. Is that also Frey syndrome and what could have caused it?

I got a tooth infection then a sinus infection and now this frey syndrome. I hope it goes away after sinus surgery and bioresonance. maybe it's not frey syndrome but other nerve damage I still have lots of saliva production and sweat hard in other places as well after eating

I still suffer from frey syndrome after 8 years of parotid gland surgery, it was a benign tumor. Is there anything I can do to stop this sweating. If I left it just like that is it going to harm me in a way or other. Thanks for the valuable information you provided

Can a tonsillectomy ever cause Frey syndrome? And can Frey syndrome cause flushing/greasy hot burning sensations throughout the whole face and scalp? Since I was a child, my face and scalp flare up whenever I eat, see, or think about eating acidic or sugary foods (eg lemonade). Not a watery sweat, but the warm oily kind. Spicy foods don’t affect me much at all. I don’t ever experience this issue without the gustatory input. I just don’t know if it’s primary craniofacial hyperhidrosis triggered by acidic foods, or if there is some nerve damage involved. Also, my sister has hyperhidrosis on her hands. For me, it isn’t severe, but sometimes it can be a real nuisance.
