Are flaxseeds like bitter almonds, where just a few ounces could kill you, or more like regular almonds, where regular dietary intake wouldn’t even come close?
In this video, I mentioned Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen Checklist (nutritionfacts.org/video/dr-g..., where you can see my recommendation of one tablespoon ground flaxseed per day. For more on the Daily Dozen check out the Daily Dozen Digest (nutritionfacts.org/daily-dozen/).

Baking the flax into bread has an additional benefit beyond just the water content with regard to destroying the cyanide content of flax seeds. In the presence of reducing sugars like glucose (present in bread dough upon spontaneous hydrolysis of starch), cyanide will react to form harmless cyanohydrins which are non-toxic. This is presumed to be the reason that the poisoning of Rasputin at Yusupov palace failed. Although they fed him copious amounts of sodium cyanide, they baked it into sugary desserts (petit fours) which immediately neutralized it upon baking.

In pakistan and India, flaxseed is essential every winter. Mamas/grandmamas make a round sweet ball called Ladoo, we consume them in the morning, as cold is a little too much to get out and make official breakfast. That sweet usually contains freshly harvested rice that is in the shape of coarce powder, peanut/almonds/raisins/pinenuts/dates etc, freshly made jiggery ( A sweet made with sugarcane). Funnily enough, no one has dropped dead in India Pakistan by consuming such a large amount of flaxseed.

The overdose phenomenon can be a real problem. Happened to me. I've used ground and defatted flaxseed flour (basically ground press cake after oil extraction) as a source of fiber - one large spoon per day in a smoothie. A few months back, i confused the jar with ground millet with the ground flaxseed. Put about a cup of ground flaxseed flour in my shake and a spoon of ground millet. To my disadvantage, i often drink the shake in one go before work. A few minutes later, i started to feel uneasy. My breath got rather short and i felt nauseous. When i stood up from my desk, i was about to pass out. I'm 35 years old, healthy and athletic. That day, i tried to put my finger down my throat to empty my stomach. It didn't work, i cant innduce viniting myself. I kind of panicked because i was home alone and decided to walk outside in the neighborhood so maybe someone would notice me if something happened. Got the ambulance pre dialed on my phone. I walked for four hours, then my symptoms started to improve. In hindsight, I'm rather sure it was the enormous amount of defatted and fine ground flaxseed. All other ingredients were harmless (a bitnof millet, oat and ground apple)

Hi Doc, my wife developed basically a phobia against every oil. We use frozen vegetables stock to pan fry with, but that simply doesn't work so well. Is a bit of oil to fry your veggies with really so bad?
@pdblouin
@pdblouin 2 года назад
It's empty calories and some studies have shown decrease in artery function. But compared to bacon at every meal, it's healthy. Compared to no oil? It's worse. It depends on your risk tolerance, and it seems your wife's risk tolerance is lower than yours.
@thesleepinggirl
@thesleepinggirl 2 года назад
Dr Greger does say a tiny bit of extra virgin olive oil is ok occasionally. He has a video somewhere...... but he's more referring to salad dressing. A light spray/wipe over a pan (if you aren't cooking on high heat) might be ok every other day. I'm with you - cooking certain dishes without oil isn't great! Water/stock-frying is meh... but for health, it's better to exclude it. Better to switch to having more soups and stews/other dishes that don't need oil so much. As a vegan of nearly 20 years with very low cholesterol/no family history of lifestyle/heart disease, I don't worry much about a little oil here and there. Depends on your wife's/your risk factors.

Can you talk about weight/strength training and the amount of vegan protein we need to eat? I’m having to modify the daily dozen to get enough protein and it gets complicated. I’m worried about skipping grains and nuts in favour of whole proteins like soy and pea protein powders though. Is it as healthy? I really need to build muscle though because my metabolism is extremely slow from yo-yo dieting and I can’t lose weight. And I don’t just want to add more protein because I don’t want to gain weight.I know eating lots of protein can be unhealthy but so is a BMI of 30. It’s so complicated.
@pdblouin
@pdblouin 2 года назад
Unless you want to compete in bodybuilding shows, don't worry about protein. Resistance training and a calorie deficit will work. The daily dozen is really hard to achieve, and very low calorie. I'm usually too full to check off all boxes daily.

@davin8r
@davin8r 2 года назад
Dogs are extremely sensitive to cyanide and can't metabolize it nearly as well as humans. It's really a good idea to do some reading, or even just a quick online search, before giving your pet *any* kind of supplement. Some things that are harmless to humans are quite toxic to our pups. That being said, I imagine a lot of online sources say flax is ok for dogs because those sources don't even know flax contains traces of cyanide.

As a Swedish person I've noticed for a while how this recommendation has played out. Since the nutritional guidelines from livsmedelsverket (national food agency) recommends only eating flax seeds whole - since then you wont run any risk of absorbing any of the cyanice - completely misses the point that you wont absorb anything at all. Swedish grocery stores have bread sections with many bread varieties with "whole flax seeds" baked into them, crackers filled with "whole flax seeds". All marketed as the healthy choice and "high fiber". Flax seeds are only sold whole, and requires you to get a high speed blender if you want to consume ground flax, which really isn't a bad idea anyway.

@PhilippeOrlando
@PhilippeOrlando 2 года назад
I'm sorry Dr. Greger, but after some research it seems that flax seeds should be out of anybody's diet. Sure, they do have lignans and a lot of antioxidants, but so do a lot of other foods. Health shouldn't be linked to only one food in particular. Since it is a fact that they do contain cyanide, why consume them when chia seeds and walnuts can supply us with omega 3? We can find fiber elsewhere and most plant based people have no issue with finding fiber elsewhere. Why should we trust the industry that says that a certain amount is safe? And what happens as we get older and our bodily systems becomes weaker at detoxifying us? Can we detoxify our bodies at 70 the same way we used to do it at 30? Listen, I understand you feel bad because you used to recommend flax seeds, I think you should revise your position with new science and the precautionary principle. Flax seeds contain cyanide and it's unclear if we all have the ability to remove this compound. How do we know if that cyanide in some of us is not responsible for some form of chronic fatigue or some other ailments? Please people, evolve, adjust and be flexible.

The hydroxyl group at the meta positions of both aromatic rings distinguishes them from their plant precursors.Due to their structural similarity with natural estrogen, they could exert estrogenic activity" Table 4. One of the reasons why lignans work for prostate cancer is because it reduces testosterone... I'm tired of commenting this, and I'm no scientist but I know how to read english. This is crucial information that shouldn't be disregarded when flaxseeds are described as a "super food". I will gladly wait for a video or comment response from Dr. Greger. As for the other commenters I'm tired of replying, so I won't. Read the studies yourself. Have a nice day.

Cherry picking to support your preconceived agenda. No difference in testosterone between flax seed 30g/day vs placebo in this study "Flaxseed Supplementation (not Dietary Fat Restriction) Reduces Prostate Cancer Proliferation Rates in Men Presurgery"

@@davin8r I site 2 studies, that also site a lot of other studies. Yeah, cherry picking! What agenda do I have? Questioning and highlighting the fact that flax seeds reduce testosterone?! Making questions is an agenda? Is there a anti-flax seeds agenda? You didn't even read the quote I took from that study. Your comment is such an embarrassment I felt the necessity of making you realize it. Honestly, you should delete it!

@@isabellezablocki7447 Deves achar que eu também falo francês. Fica a saber uma coisa caro amigo, eu não falo. Se tens argumentos contra aquilo que eu disse, então diz lá. Eu referenciei estudos, consulta-os. Acerca do meu nome, vê o estudo "20 questions on atherosclerosis". Os humanos são herbívoros. Estás a ver como é que é responder e falar com outra pessoa com uma lingua que elas não falam? É bacano ne? Cumprimentos.
