FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) | 4K UHD MOVIE REVIEW | PARAMOUNT | How Dark Is Too Dark? 

I picked up this 4k too but haven't watched it yet but should watch it this weekend!

Same scan done by paramount. Only difference is 4K disc and no original audio or separate disc for the theatrical cut. Shout did some work on the scan but that’s it.

@@Thecatdrums3 Wrong, Shout did a new 4k scan in 2020 for their box set...

It's the same scan but they botched the HDR on this release and apparently used DNR. Film grain isn't as fine as other releases like Beverly Hills Cop II.

@@Thecatdrums3 Paramount did, but they screwed with it for this new release. The HDR is supposed to be completely botched, and the DNR is all over the place. Some parts look digital smooth and others look grainy like an old VHS.

Another difference is that they changed the fade to white at the start to a fade to black. I have no idea why because it's always been that way until this 4K.

That was my mindset while watching, even though I understand the criticism, it worked perfectly for me.

Where did you order Friday the 13th from? I pre-ordered mine from Amazon in June and I am still waiting for it!

Yeah it's supposed to be dark but not that dark. You're missing detail in the shadows, it's crushed.

@@VIDEOgameDROME TV settings maybe, I know they should not need to he adjusted, price is right gonna give it a shot.

Yeah I have to say the grain looks more like noise in this release. It's supposed to add detail but it's almost scrubbed. It's just nowhere near the quality of other Paramount releases I have. I still say the HDR is botched, some of the skin tones look off and they changed the intro fade from white to black. I mean if people are happy with this then that's fine for them but we shouldn't encourage transfers like this that not only alter the film but bury any detail or gradation.

True but the whites are definitely blown out just in HDR10. It's too dark and yet simultaneous the white highlights are blasted to 1000 nits. Hopefully capsaholic will have screen caps up soon.

Those don’t do DV for discs. Xbox will for streaming.

Part 2 will not be uncut, they cannot restore that footage without the camera negative or maybe CGI but that would not be cheap!

@@NYC_Goody My friend thank you for your reply. I think arrogance got the best of me and I should have stated that in my experience, 98 percent of the time the Dolby Vision encode is better than standard hdr. I just finished watching the 4k transfer of this on my oled with the gold standard ub820 player. What I can say is that in my experience I enjoyed the transfer. It’s a very interesting Dolby pass. 80- 85 percent of the time I found the transfer to be very very good. There were some shots that were a little too hot and some of the darker scenes were perhaps 1/3-1 stop under. In Interior scenes where it wasn’t quite night time, it was almost just right - there was detail outside the window, but the dark faces were almost there if only maybe they could’ve opened up 1/4 - 1/2 stop up. The night time scenes I felt were mostly good. They reminded me of nighttime in jaws or close encounters except here perhaps they were 1/3 stop down in some cases. Some of the detail in daytime scenes as on closeups were terrific. I wonder if whoever graded this did some scenes just right and left it to some type of computer automation to guess other scenes to make them almost correct but not quite. This is not a terrible transfer by any means, I would give the transfer between 4 and 41/4 stars. The film has a certain slickness to it that’s why I mentioned jaws and close encounters. And perhaps that is a problem for some. I am reminded of the Shout Halloween vs the standard Halloween 4ks; does one prefer more contrast and slickness on shout vs darker and granier standard release? The bigger issue is no original audio although I will say that the center and dialogue were very clear and the Hermanesque/ Hitchcockian score came in nicely. I will be on the lookout here in Hollywood for a film print screening to compare. @@plasticspoon0101, that’s bad. I hate it when original films are tampered with! I hope it gets back to Paramount that film enthusiasts are not happy, and they correct this. It may seem trivial to some people, but the problem is, if they don’t get any criticism from this, it will be seen as acceptable, and they will continue to do this kind of thing where they see fit.

Yes Devin, you are 100%. I saw two videos that bashed this release, but one reviewer said he watched it on a hisense TV and the other didn't mention his TV, but was comparing images via pictures from his cell phone. I disregarded both reviews. This is the second positive I've seen and I'm ready to open my 4K copy (i was holding on to return if it didn't offer anything more than the shout factory disc).

No offense intended to anyone with a hisense TV. I just believe if one is doing blu ray or 4k disc reviews, they should be doing so on higher end setups.

As I’ve commented elsewhere, this sucks. We need to demand to Paramount that they correct this.

@@aaronclick6388 after being screwed over with the Scream release of Prince of Darkness being in the wrong colour space and then the same thing happening to the first reel of Silence of The Lambs I'm checking reviews for pretty much everything I buy now. I go straight to the Blu-ray forums because if there's something wrong with something they'll sniff it out because they're very knowledgable and also love to nitpick which I actually appreciate as long as it's not just over the cover art. 😅 But yeah sometimes I wanna start drinking with all these mess ups and recalls (or lack thereof).

How about Sony Bravia 4K X1 HDR tv does it looks good on that TV because that what I have I don't own the movie on 4k that still debating if I'm willing to get it or not

Played it on Panasonic ub820 and LG CX. Movie looks pretty good to me.

@@markpugh6808 that’s just not even close to accurate. People are getting into horror and going through these movies every year. I started collecting about 3 years ago and that was the first time I had seen any of the Friday movies. Your experience doesn’t represent everybody’s fam!

This 100%. Revisionism and brightness levels aside, the encoding on recent Paramount titles has been nothing but a catastrophe and reviewers should point this fact out. It's a travesty when you have worse compression on UHDs when you compare them to their Shout 1080p counterparts or even Paramount's Remastered in 4k 1080p counterparts (Fatal Attraction and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance). In a perfect world, big studios would release their UHDs like Arrow (who works with FiM): Nearly flawless compression. But as long as reviewers keep singing praises, things will never change.

@@VIDEOgameDROME, that really irks me. I can handle a slightly dark transfer, but messing with the actual content of films is wrong. Some would say this is a minor issue, but I disagree. It’s alarming.

Watch Richard Diaz's video. He details the issues which you seem to be uninformed about. Also comparing this to people complaining about film grain is laughable. Apples and oranges

You definitely haven't searched out more reviews then. There are just as much positive reviews as bad reviews. The opinion's on this release are all over the place. It all comes down to what YOU prefer look wise. The 4k vs the Bluray are very different looking and both have pros and cons. I have both and watched/compared both on my 77inch OLED. I like both for different reasons and am glad to have both in my library:)
