Updated World Record Speedrun: • Friday the 13th NES Wo...
No hits, no damage. The story of this run is simple. Jason attacked Camp Crystal Lake and was killed without the counselors having to get out the first aid kit. No kids died. No counselors (active or inactive) took damage. If this was a movie, it wouldn't make much money.
This speedrun world record will probably be the highlight of my time with Friday the 13th. While things like Low% (no items, rock only) and the Immortal Run (glitching Jason to give him 864 bars of health instead of the normal 96) are difficult, you can still make a mistake here and there without the run being over. With this category you have to be perfect. There are still some things that can be done to improve the run, but for now I'm content to do other goofy challenges with this game. If there's something you'd like to see me try (assuming it's possible, things like a perfect game without Mark or Crissy can't be done as far as I'm aware), let me know in the comments!

game terrorized me and my cousin as a kid but i couldnt get enough but then i recently beat it earlier this year to make my younger self proud, i love your skill and love of the game on display here ! You and your friends are alive! Game On !

Thanks! With Any% the world record is actually under 3 minutes, but you're basically tanking hits from Jason and not dodging anything.

HOLY SHIT!!!! I had this game when I was younger! And I did beat it multiple times! But that was usually after getting Mrs. Voorhees' sweater and the pitchfork. I NEVER knew there was a pattern to getting the torch and Jason's movements in the game and how easily it could be beat! DAMN!!!!

The quicktorch is a real game changer. I didn't know Jason had a set pattern until a year or two ago either, but that really helps. Having a general idea of where he is at all times is so useful and it opens up the no map run, which is a lot more fun than it should be!

Holy cow, I haven’t played this in probably 30 years, but I remember it being one of the harder games I had as a kid. Great video the creepy nostalgia is great too.

Thanks! I still remember the feeling of being so afraid of the jumpscare of Jason popped up while I was searching a cabin, and I was 7 or 8 at the time. Not many games from that era can accomplish something like that.

When I was a kid I played this with my mom a lot. So nostalgic.. the only other video game that scares me as much as this was Clock Tower. Scissor Man was terrifying.

I played this game a dozen times as a 7/8 year old. I had no idea what I was doing and Jason just randomly popped up. Watching you speedrun it is cool but I still have no idea what to do or the real objective of the game. Lol it’s wildly complicated and no one I knew as a kid had any idea how to play it!

Thanks! It might be one of the most complicated games on the NES. So much fun when you learn how it works, but prior to that you’re just kind of wondering around. I actually have a series of guides for Friday the 13th where I break down how the game works under the hood, so if you ever feel like learning more about it that’s a great place to start! There are a few things about Pamela and the Lake that I haven’t seen posted anywhere else before!

Thanks! I'm very comfortable in the cabins, but path fights can fall apart in less than a second. It's no fun to avoid path fights though!

Actually beat this game in 7 mins 09 secs. Doing what you're doing. Quickest I've ever beaten it and it's the only time I've done it that fast. Sooo many tries.

That’s awesome, congrats! I really need to go back to this category someday and hopefully get a better seed for it. I’d need to remember what the optimal seed is for a perfect game too, but that’s the easy part!

Thank you! I felt like it was going to happen last night after all of the save state practice, I just didn't expect it to be so early. I know I can still get a better time so I can't say I'll never go back to that category, but it's nice to have a break from something that intense!

It's such a bizarre contrast. Lorelai loves to be on camera, but Zelda (my other cat) will always look down when she jumps on my lap and I try to put her on screen 😆

Where did you learn about Jason's pattern when patrolling the camp? I know there is one but I can't remember how it goes.

As far as I'm aware, a speedrunner named Valientlink was the first person to post the pattern Jason used. There's another runner named DTysonator that might have posted it somewhere, but the one I found was from Valientlink. The link where I learned the routing is below. I still remember seeing that Jason was in a cabin, and getting all tense and nervous every time I'd move to a different area of the cabin. They managed to do a great job making the game scary with the hardware they had to work with at the time!

They didn't explain anything so it was confusing, but things like each counselor having different stats were definitely ahead of their time. I've noticed a common theme of people hating on it because AVGN did, when they're not realizing that his videos aren't serious and are meant to be entertaining (and they are!). They'll just parrot things he said and you can tell a lot of them haven't played the game themselves.

@@pitongus While I can't dispute how poorly the game was received by pretty much everybody, I have noticed that once people start to figure out how the game works, more often than not they'll end up enjoying it. I know it's never going to happen, but I love the idea of trying to change the narrative on this game!

@@ZeroThe14th Yeah, that was always my problem with the game, not knowing what to actually do. The only time I ever played it was when we would rent it from the video store, and they didnt always give instruction booklets out with the games. This was one that didnt come with a booklet. Its always fun seeing speedrunners completely destroy games I always had trouble with growing up lol Nicely done!

Even going back now about a year later there are so many things I'd do differently in that run, since I've learned a lot more about the inner workings of the game in the last year. The buddy crow in the lake has changed so much when it comes to damageless runs. For the manual, it wouldn't have been of much use for this game. It's very generic and only explains the basics. I keep mine on a side table here so I can show it to the camera if needed for some reason (usually Laura related!)

@@m3talmonk3y I could beat Punch Out, but not TMNT. My Battletoads cart was messed up and always froze in the Pit so I couldn't get too far in that one 🤣

@@ZeroThe14th yeah, the hardest part is the underwater stage. After that, it’s a breeze. Sucks about your Battletoads cartridge. Really fun game but challenging.

@@m3talmonk3y I was able to beat the Water stage, but I’d usually fail in 3. On the rare occasions that I cleared that, I’d die in 5 😆
