Intro + outro You can see that Frieren isn't casting a spell when Fern starts to fire her spell, but the copy is. Fern was waiting for a moment like that so that Frieren could detect her but the copy couldn't.
Thanks for noticing that Serie loved Flamme. Most American reactors fail to catch the half-second pause when she heard that Flamme died, the fact that she dodged Frieren's question of whether she's sad, the walk where her memory of the little Flamme was all over the place, the time that she said Flamme's dream was disgusting/displeasing but with a smile, and those occasional signs of sadness in her eyes when she talked in the walk. You can see her reluctance to let go when the little Flamme sprinted away from her, and how she talked about Flamme's life achievements like a proud parent talking about their kid. She said she only trained Flamme on a whim but of course she remembered her favorite spell and her dream, everything about her, in the way like Frieren saying "it was only a 10 year adventure". Just a side note: in the original Japanese she kept referring to Flamme as "that child" (only simply translated as "she" in the English sub) and that sentence "but humans cannot afford to delay" in original Japanese was "but those children [such as Flamme] cannot afford to delay". Serie really sees the human like kids in her adult eyes, not really in the light of a potentially competing race. Serie just didn't want to admit that Flamme's death hit her hard. She was upset with Flamme's will, like an estranged parent upset about her kid not having visited her during life at all, but only left a bunch of unpaid debts for her to settle. But she missed Flamme anyway. That walk and that talk was Serie's way of dealing with the impact of Flamme's death. She didn't want to be alone so she invited Frieren even though they didn't get along. That monologue was essentially her eulogy to Flamme, the funeral speech that reminisced about the Flamme she knew while celebrating her achievements in life. And in a way, the final parts of the talk she was admitting that her little girl was right about her dream. Watch it again focusing on Serie's perspective and you will see much more than just her being a cold gatekeeper of magic. Serie may have torn up Flamme's will, but 1000 years later she was doing her disciple's wishes anyway. Intro/Outro.
the pain for every long living beings in fantasy world, if they dont keep their emotions in control, Frieren and Serie would already fall into depression probably lol. Though for me, as a procrastinator, being an elf might be a blessing~
Regarding your discussion at the beginning, Flamme *did* teach Frieren to fight unfairly/smart. I don't think she does it as much as Flamme would want her too though. That talk Frieren had with Fern about Fern growing up with Zoltraak and how that made it more natural for her to use made me think about how I grew up when PCs were first entering people's homes, lost track of how many different systems I've had in my lifetime, and my kid still embarrasses me with how much more they know about certain aspects of computer tech.
The PC analogy is a great example; we see stuff like the engineers behind the first cellphones or slim TVs joking about having trouble keeping up with cut of the edge tech and lil ones like your kiddo are alive in the same timeline of some folks that only watched black and white shows growing up….. the world doesn’t stop and experience takes you so far.

I did enjoy how the injured guy pulls up and is asking for cooperation, and Denken is like "That's what I wanted to do from the very beginning before all of you decided to ignore me." I know I'm going to miss this series after these last 3 episodes, since it's likely going to be years before we see a 2nd season. Every episode is just so enjoyable.
The chalk drawing of the battle plan during this episode was true to the final scenario that killed the Frieren clone. According to the drawing when the fight starts, Fern just has to scramble and hide near the nearest column and stay there while Frieren battles the clone and brings it to a spot were Frieren would be between the clone and Fern who is hiding behind the column. As soon as Fern sees that the clone is where she is supposed to be that is her cue to blast her with Frieren blocking the clones view of Fern below and of course without the clone detecting such a blast of full powered zoltraak coming her way since her mana detection is down during that instant as it is also casting a slightly slower spell of its own towards Frieren who sees the clones attack coming miles away because she is it and it is her. lol! Nice touch as always on the little things! Awesome anime!😊
Serie: Frieren you know that disciple I train on a whim that I totally don't care about at all can you listen to me talk about her childhood what her favorite spell was her dream and the fact that she did incredible thing for humanity? but like I totally don't care at all that she died but let me them you about her achievement while I walk remembering how small she use to be holding my hand when she was a child. Then a thousand year later doing exactly what Flamme ask of her being the head of the largest magic association. yep she totally didn't care about Flamme at all.
They've predicted how the clone frieren would move. And devised a plan on where and when to fire off spells hence fern saying it moves according to plan. So fern moving to that boulder is also planned and despite frieren not sensing fern, she knows where she is.

Intro and Outro. This episode was so beautiful, from strategy meeting to fighting, to Serie calling teaching Flamme her whim but still reminiscing everything about her with a smile. I really like the end part where Serie and Frieren are discussing the outcome of humans learning magic. Serie is facing backward and talking about either demon king or human mage will kill Frieren. In contrast, Frieren is facing forward and is excited to see all the new mages and magic that will be developed in future.

when it comes to serie actions speaks louder than words, she said a lot of distasteful things about her dead student but a thousand years later she was doing what flamme asked of her a 1000 yrs later & you're still honoring the wishes of the dead? that seems like love to me
Honestly, Serie just comes off a lot like Frieren. I am willing to bet Flamme is to Serie as what Himmel is to Frieren. I think it's just worse for Serie cause I am fairly certain she is much much older than Frieren. So she is likely way more jaded about human relationships in general. Edit: Basically it's harder for her to accept the idea that her relationship with Flamme affected her.
She really isn’t though. Flamme wanted her to help teach humanity in general magic. Serie disagreed only wanting people who have talent to learn magic. Flash forward to now and Serie sits on her throne offering the magic she has learned to only the mages who can pass her exam. And even if you look at the Continental Magic Association it only works with mages who pass the test to get in. She isn’t doing what Flamme wanted, I do think Serie cared about Flamme more than she lets on but here and now Serie is still just doing what she herself wants to do by her own philosophy On top of this Flamme died 1000 years ago, based on earlier statements the Continental Magic Association has been around for half a century. Meaning that there is over 900 years there where humanity continued on their own without Serie involving herself at all which flies directly in the face of what Flamme asked.

As for the 900 yrs of doing nothing serie literally said that as elves they can wait for a millenium before making a decision. serie teaches who she wants but the organization she handles certifies mages & is surely affiliated with magic schools that would teach even regular mages they both got what they want, serie definetly took into account what flamme wanted when she designed this whole system

Flamme founded the basis of all humans having access to learning magic and wanted Serie to help guide humanity’s magic and take Flamme’s place teaching humanity as a whole. Serie sat around for 900 years leaving humanity to figure things out themselves and only 50 or so years ago after humanity had already gone through numerous generations of progressing on their own did she set up an organization. And even then that organization doesn’t do what Flamme wanted, the Continental Magic Association was built around rewarding and recognizing talent requiring people to take an exam in order to even become members meaning they must already show capability and promise before they can even be a bottom rank member. All while Serie sits at the top of the totem pole only dealing herself with those she deems worthy. Literally none of what Flamme would have wanted is in here. This isn’t a compromise, it’s just Serie doing what Serie wants. She isn’t teaching magic to anyone wants to learn, only to those who prove themselves first. As Serie said, magic should be special bestowed upon those with talent, and she rewards talent only involving herself and creating her organization likely after humanity had progressed enough themselves to be worthy of her attention.
@@CeliriaRose it is a compromise, according to the will *_flamme simply wanted serie to take over her place as the head_* not make magic more accessible to everyone bc *_flamme already achieved that feat_* , magic is already accessible to the point that heiter was able to teach fern some basics that impressed frieren despite not being a mage himself, there are schools about magic which teaches all sorts of ppl including unremarkable mages, & regular folk are developing folk magic on their own which frieren is collecting. not to mention serie teaching specific mages has a butterfly effect since some of those students may end up having students of their own some of which could turn out to be unremarkable, in the end it doesnt matter if serie gate keeps magic since humans by nature share knowledge so yeah it is a compromise, in fact flamme gets the better end of the deal & serie has only a limited gate keeping influence as for the 900 yrs ive already said it, elves can sit around for a millennium before deciding & flamme knows this too
To me, it feel like Fern cant kill Frieren with spell other than zoltrak, because that the only spell Fern can cast fast enough before Frieren blocking it. Also Frieren didn't cast any spell when Fern is shooting zoltrak while the replica does, so technically Frieren can sense Fern. Still its impressive how she can time it all so nicely and create such opening to begin with. Outro
Remember what Frieren said the first time Heiter asked her to teach Fern, and she refused? “Apprentice mages die too easily in battle, and I don’t want to lead a girl entrusted to me by a friend to an early death.” Someone just starting out learning magic would be horrendously vulnerable in combat, since they haven’t mastered many spells yet and their mana pool would be small, and they don’t have the physical abilities of warriors. Zoltrak is the simplest offensive spell that is useful. Quick to cast. Quick to learn. Least likely to be messed up by accident in the heat of battle. Frieren taught Fern a fighting style that would allow her to achieve a high enough competency to be relatively safe in combat in the shortest time possible,

I like listening to the intros and outros because its something special a lot of reacts dont do which is let us know what you're thinking going into the episodes. That fight animation with the purple lightning and volcano spell was superb
it's because zoltraak has been modified by her to 1 shot demons and monster...this fake frieren is the monster and zoltraak is obviously not as effective against her enemies which is the real frieren and fern...fern on the other hand is the exception she perfected zoltraak it's so natural to her that she basically has an all killing spell although it's not as lethal against humans but her mana and control is on another realm so she's still unstoppable with only zoltraak
@@qyn69 Nope they can't. Ubel would be easily defeated by Frieren's Zoltraak. Remember, if Frieren wants to, she could use a highly condensed Zoltraak that could destroy any defensive shield. On the other hand, it was already said in the previous episode that binding magic won't work on Frieren (due to Frieren's huge mana difference), so Solganiel won't work on Frieren. Methode and Sense might fight equally with Frieren (if she was limited to Zoltraak), but then, it would later turn into a battle of attrition, so Frieren would win by default since human mages would run out of mana first.

No matter how strong you are there is always a mage that can counter you. Just like how rock paper scissors does. A mage might have an imagination that is exactly the opposite of your imagination. The line about Zoltraak being around since Fern was born, is meant to reference the ease of acquiring tech-savvy-ness for each successive generation IRL. The earlier in our lifetimes that we are exposed to the cognitive frameworks required to easily use computers, iphones, tablets, etc, the more instinctive it is. I used to teach using Microsoft Office at an Adult Education Center in my city, and older students (as in Baby Boomers, elder Gen X) needed to understand more basic, Operating System paradigms first, like folder directories, cut/copy/paste, dragging items, etc. So they had to expend mental effort for that stuff, whereas folks our age (Millennials, Zoomers) intuitively understand the paradigm much faster and it's almost reflexive for us.
Imagine if that how Serie grieving about Flamme's death over the centuries all over again as human start learning about magic, by developing the first class mage and stuff

"Weak times create weak people. Hard times create strong people". I think THIS is both why Serie didn't want herself to defeat the demon king AND why she does this first-class mage exam. The demon king being alive, it WILL create an era in which strong people are gonna have to step up. Flamme allowing everyone to learn magic would make this idea non existent anymore, since almost every person would be able to learn magic. I understand due to Serie's behavior and rudeness, some people might not like her, but that doesn't mean she is not important. Deep inside, she cares 🤣 she's a big tsundere I think Serie's true self might be: she, being way older than Frieren herself, was around even before humanity started civilization. She probably must've had so many lost (Flamme included) that her harsh words and behavior is just her demonstrating (or trying to demonstrate) that she remains unfazed to these situations....but she's not. We all know she liked Flamme. Serie and Frieren simply think different. In the end they're all on the same side of the story (against the demons) In the end, she DID end up doing what Flamme asked her to (this whole first-class mage exam and her reward for those who pass it). Ngl if she wanted, i think she could have prevented humanity of learning magic, but she did love Flamme, and we all know how tsundere are LOL
I am glad they didn't go the route of Fern just for some reason being capable of killing Frieren on her own. It required using Frieren to occupy the clone in order to take advantage of two specific flaws.The first flaw, she stops detecting mana when she fires off a spell. And the second flaw, her reaction speed to defending against Fern's Zoltraac would be too slow.
Now I’m just worried about wether the others will have to fight the replicas or if the girls will get to the main thing first. Also; they did make it look effortless!
