Here in Australia, mosquito fish are illegal as they have completely wiped out some frog populations and have been proven to not even like mosquitoes but then so do goldfish. That's why my ponds are separate. Some frogs still lay eggs in the fish ponds but by morning the fish are having a great feed. I hope what we refer to as mosquito fish aren't the same as yours although they look the same.

So far, BOTH frog ponds were DESTROYED by homeowners after the homes sold. 😡😱😞💔 They were gorgeous and expensive DIY. Some people are a**hats, ya know? Now I am in the heart of Spokane-not favorable for them due to smaller yards, and no real fans. I'm putting one in anyway because we have both columbian spotted and pacifics here and I'm an avid pro habitat builder!

Thank you for a well thought out demonstration and instruction! Wish I found this earlier! We used to have small California Tree Frogs in our backyard and I think they may have been breeding in our pool as I used to find dead ones in our filtering system! Unfortunately, we haven't seen nor heard them for several years now!

my pond is shallow around the outside, i noticed 4 frogs, i also have guppies and gold fish, the plants are important, they keep the water clear. it is a great hobbie. i put my pond in my front yard for the neighborhood to enjoy. Every time im out feeding the fish, or just making an adjustment, someone walking by comments, people are actually coming from around the block to get a look at my pond, it's pretty cool. neighbors driving by even stop. so im pretty happy with it, lots of positive feedback

So I have followed this series step by step and ended up with a good looking frog pond, although I haven't quite chosen the right sized rocks as there is LOTS of black liner still shwoing, but plenty of time to solve that :-) The main problem I have is that within a week of filling the pond, it went quite green. To counter it, I added some 'beneficial bacteria' which I had forgotten to do. But this turned the whole pond black within a couple of hours. Is this OK? Or has something gone horrible wrong? When it was green I could still see the bottom... the boulders and gravel. But now, its just pitch black.

@natklimt24

@@jovanymartinez3903 it sorted itself out within a few weeks and went back to being very clear. A year out so later, algae took over due to too much direct sun. Bit adding more oxygenating plants and to have sheeted it and now it's a nice clean pond again.

So my great delimma is that the tree frogs come in abunbance really quick. The problem is that eventually the green and leopard frogs move in and chase the singing frogs away. For that I think I will keep it shallow. I may have to drain it annually to "reboot" the process. Got one in my back yard, but ever since I got chickens they knocked a lot of the smaller frogs out. :-(. So building one in my front yard where there are no chicks on hopefuly frogs.

You mentioned that the water should be stagnant. I am designing my Fish pond and was wondering if to the side of the falls and cascade, I could put a smaller version of this Frog pond? It would be on the upper area of the backfilled soil of the retaining wall, getting it's supply of water from one of the cascade pools and then overflowing into the larger fish pond through rocks and gravel, instead of over them. Would this method cause the water to be too swift for a proper Frog habitat?
@ThePondDigger
@ThePondDigger 10 лет назад
It is possible to create a small off shoot of your fish pond to support tadpoles. Anything is possible. ;) Here is the problem. If you create a small section off the cascade for tadpoles once they morph and leave the adult frogs will not recognize that small area as the correct spot to propagate and leave eggs the following year. In order to create a habitat where the frogs will return and successfully reproduce year after year you will need a dedicated frog pond otherwise your fish will eat the frog eggs and tadpoles. I hope that helps.

In choosing a location for my frog pond, how much sunlight or shade do I need to have on it? I have a lot of open area that doesn't get much shade until late in the evenings, or I have a couple spots that get partial shade most of the day. Love what you do, thanks for sharing! I built a very small waterfall and stream a few weeks ago after doing a video marathon of your channel. It turned out fairly well for a first attempt, and it's attracted a frog or two. Would love to make the frog pond for my second project.
@ThePondDigger
@ThePondDigger 10 лет назад
Jason thank you for your passion!! I would love to see some footage of your waterfall and stream if you ever post a video of it let me know! As far as your frog pond location, I would suggest that you provide both shade and sun. Too much shade and the water will stay cool and it will take the morph a little longer. Too much sun and the pond will be harder to manage algae. Enjoy!!!

Okay, thanks for the info. I think I have a good spot in mind for the pond. I do have a short clip of the waterfall and stream on my channel if you'd like to see it. I'm new enough to youtube that I don't know how to link it here for you!

I built a frog pond last year Ann's out turned out great. MINUS the raccoons that got in and tore up all the plants and ate all the tadpoles and frog eggs. How can I deter the coons. One thought was to make a straight drop into the pond instead of any areas that can be used as a "beach". Electric fences are a no go.

I added irrigation dran pipers to mine with small holes cut into it. That way they can escape racoon paws easily.

Thank you so much for this video! Question about sun vs shade... I've heard conflicting advice. Our pond will be almost identical design as yours. People have told me that a no pump pond needs to be away from trees to prevent too much debris from getting in the pond. Others have said that toads/frogs prefer shaded ponds. I have both a sun or shade spot where I can build the pond. What do you recommend and why? We live in Colorado outside of Denver. it may be possible for me to plant an evergreen to shade the pool and won't drop leaves in the fall, but there would still be some debris from the needles.

As I understand it, one must dig the pond three feet deep in colder climates where it freezes because frogs will not choose a shallow habitat in those regions. Comments?

I live in Istanbul, Turkey, where water freezes in the winter for a few days maybe a week. Is this frog pond a bad idea for the climate i live in? Or is there a way that i can prevent freezing. I don't know maybe adding pumps for moving water or something?
@ThePondDigger
@ThePondDigger 8 лет назад
This little frog pond is perfect for the breeding season. These frogs that we are attracting do not actually live in the water and they hibernate on land. In the spring they look to find small bodies of water like this for breeding and their tadpoles will morph well before winter hits. There are things you can do to keep the pond from freezing over with moving water if your winters are not too extreme. Thank you very much for watching our videos. Stay tuned for more.
@Moamanly
@Moamanly 6 лет назад
Ipek; The frogs won't be in the pond over winter anyway....they generally hang around the pond and go into it only during breeding season. If it is deep enough any tadpoles that haven't morphed will probably be ok below the ice...they tend to stop growing when the water gets too cold and then develop over spring and early summer. I reccomend you make part of your pond at least a metre deep remembering to have places where frogs can get out of the water when they need to.

How big does a frog pond need to be? I don't have that much space to build a pond, but I'd love to make a small one to attract frogs. I'm thinking maybe 3 x 4 or so. I could make it deeper than 12 inches if that would help.

As much as I hate to say it, this pond will little to save frogs. In Northern climes you need a minimum 2-1/2 feet depth so they have chance of surviving the winter months.
@ThePondDigger

You do have a good point. There are a wide variety of frogs and climates to consider. In our area, Southern California, this is a proven method for chorus tree frogs and their tadpoles.

I have a question I hope you can answer. I have a ecosystem pond and discovered a giant waterbug hiding under my lily pads above where my koi hang out and where my frogs hang out. I have noticed I have less big frogs lately. I am sure it is the bug. I have tried to catch it to kill it but have been unsuccessful. I don't want it getting my koi or more frogs. Any way to get rid of it and/ keep them from wanting to be in my pond?

@ThePondDigger
@ThePondDigger 10 лет назад
Thank you for the question. First you should be sure you have proper filtration for the turtle pond. Second you will want to be sure you have good maintenance plan for cleaning filters and using water treatments to manage organics in the pond. When we manage organics in the pond then we can keep algae in control.
