Another question, I notice when sharpening the blade you use the same angle almost flush with the spine against the whetstone as when stropping, why is an angle of 30 degrees recommended when shaving? I would think the blade cuts best at the same angle as it was sharpened!

@FroggyShave Год назад
That's a great question to which I can't answer 😆 My personal opinion is that there is no unique angle that will be best for everybody. Depending on your beard, your skin, the blade size I find that I'm not always applying the same angle when shaving. But that's a very personal opinion.

@@FroggyShavethanks for your reply 👍😏 I think for a beginner with a straight razor it's best not to use too much of an angle against your skin so you don't cut yourself! if you still use a larger angle with the second pass, the knife will not hurt so quickly! If I see that a sharp knife can cut through a loose hair, then your beard hairs must be shaved very short at any angle!

Hi! Great video as usual. The edge looks good under microscope, we all agree, but as you saw in Hht and shaving tests…not great. What i would’ve done is change the tape in the last step(slurry with Atoma), just to be 100% sure that i’m honing the true apex.

Thx for the support mate. I would usually change the tape off damaged, this Scotch 33+ is really strong and doesn't break easily. Here it was intact. It's maybe me but I very often have challenges to get a top notch edge with an inox blade.

Hi mister, Can you give me the reason why you prefer carbon steel over stainless steel? I'm more concerned about rusting with carbon steel! I'm in doubt between the DOVO open razor Inox Olive Wood Stainless Steel 5/8 and the DOVO open razor 2-Bismarck 24k gold plated 6/8" thanks in advance for the advice!

Hey, actually after sharpening and trying many blades I couldn't say anymore that I have a single preference. Generally I find carbon or stainless steel better than Inox blades because I have experienced more issues sharpening Inox blades to get proper smooth shave. But some Inox blades like Friodur are really good 👍

@@FroggyShave How do I prevent a nice carbon steel knife from rusting? I already saw comments on RU-vid that although they always dried it well and stored it well, they still had rust!
@FroggyShave
@FroggyShave Год назад
@@pfv3462 never had rust on any of my blade BUT after each shave, I dried them AND oil them. I made a video about it.

im just getting intro stright razor, trying to learn everything before purchasing one what stone do you recommend for sharpening, and what is that other stone you seem to use on top of the other one ?

Welcome to Straight Razor shaving Ahmed! If you only use one razor, I'd say there is no need to buy a stone. Find someone of trust who can hone your razor once or twice a year it'll be cheaper. A good stone is not cheap. But if you really want to buy stones then you'll need at the minimum 1 stone to hone your razor and 1 diamond stone to lap (flatten) your other stone.

The choice of finishing stones is extremely wide. You have choice between synthetic stones (like Shapton 12k) + chromium paste or like me natural stones. You have many natural stones. For ex: JNAT (japanese natural stones), La lune, Ark, Coticul, etc... You can get decent beginner stones for around 150/200€.

@@FroggyShave Thx a lot for replying, sadly where I live, we dont have people who use stuff like this, even our barbers use the one-time disposable shaving razors, so i've been doing my own hair cutting and shaving for almost 3 years now, and I wanna get something that could last me a long time if i could maintain it, like Stright razor
@FroggyShave
@FroggyShave 2 года назад
@@ahmeddan4678 if it's just to maintain your edge (not fixe dents) you could get a La Lune stone (from 1stone) or a nice JNAT from this merchant (I bought few stones from him): ebay.ie/usr/ikkyujapanavenue You could contact him and ask him for finishing stone recommendations based on your budget.

I have one Dovo 41 Inox mother of pearl. To my opinion the worse razor and steel out there ! If someone starts straight razor shaving go to Thiers Issard or Ralf Aust.

Hey, thx for the comment. I wouldn't necessary recommend a T.I as a beginner razor but why not. I'd say, any good Solingen blade will work.
