I’ve always wanted to fly an FPV drone and after spending 10 hours in the simulator (Velocidrone) I wanted to see if I could fly one in real life. So I ordered the Flywoo Cinerace 20 HD - a tiny cinewhoop drone that can be used with the DJI digital FPV Goggle and this is how it went…

People can get different success rates with the simulator, all other variables aside like learning rate and all. How you fly in the sim is really important. You must practice slow and controlled hovers and low to the ground smooth forward and coordinated turns. Trying to dive, even hit gaps or do the more amazing looking stuff rightaway is a mistake. Hoverring and smoothly landing come by practice and memory of how your drone reacts, to throttle input. If you are a beginner reading this , remember low and slow is the way to go.

Completely agree… since those flights I’ve created some simple circuits in the park like in the simulator that helps you get used to flying low. My stick control has improved so much since going back to basics and flying slowly… so can confirm everything you said is 100% the way people should go

I would say kinda I think a aspect that you forgot is the reason we fly fpv for most its a hobby something they do in their free time while yes doing controlled hovers is a faster way of improving a lot of people would get bored

I totally understand that and I was pretty much the same… I think as I’ve been trying to refine my control (especially as I’ve been flying indoors too) I’ve gone through the pain of doing more boring exercises which has totally made my progression happen so much faster

I have quit learning guitar and harmonica because I hated doing simple repetitive exercises over and over again. Now I’m on my 6+ hours into a simulator and I can’t even hover well. Frustrated, pissed off and angry, I will press on to continue practicing

Try using a tinywhoop if you can in the simulator, the bigger quads are way more powerful but it does mean that you need much more throttle control to be able to hover them. The other thing you can do (if your sim allows) is to add throttle expo… this bends the throttle curve so it starts gentle as you move the stick and then ramps it up as you get to the top/bottom of the stick deflection. You can also do this for each axis which might also make it easier. Look for something called “rates” the big number (usually starts at 670) is the amount of degrees the quad will move on that axis per second, if you lower it to 500 it won’t spin as much

I remember that feeling in June of 2019. I started with 5 inch quad and for 6 months, my experiences were 1) fly aways 2) failsafes. Those went away when I soft mounted the fc and switched to TBS crossfire. I'm so glad you started with ACRO. You started it right. I also started ACRO. Congratulations!

I spent hours learning about failsafes before I flew for the first time… also part of the reason I flew in that field just in case I had a fly away… I’ve flown that drone for hours now and so far so good but that was my biggest panic getting started because you don’t get to practice that in sim 😂 But sounds like I need to check out your channel if you’ve been doing this for 3 years!

It's always fun to see someone on their first flight. The simultaneous joy and terror are an amusing combination. :) Bravo mate! I've got the Cinerace 20 Neon (Purple) as well, it's a fun little drone. :) The feel between RL and Sim can be... surprising. Edit: It's best to learn on Acro. Horizon and Angle have their uses, but they're poor for training purposes. They reinforce bad habits if you're just beginning. :)

The thought of breaking or losing your quad is so much more pressure 😂 This little cineracer has taken so many hits over the last few months and has continued working like new. Then a few weeks ago I managed to finally crack one of the ducts. 5min repair and it’s back in the air! I have other quad now too but there will always be a special place in my loadout for this one

@@GarethDix Your first (FPV) quad is always special, whether you built it yourself or not. However, having said that... The first one you BUILD will always be the most special to you I think. :) And yeah, the pressure is definitely there. I've yet to obliviate one, but I'm rather careful and conservative in my flying right now (still learning, but quickly!) though, I've slammed into trees left and right and I did murder a gopro hero 10 black, but... such is the hobby! I also can't afford to just smash quads, they're spendy! I like the little Cineracer because it's so tough, albeit a bit slower paced than I'm used to with the 5" and 7" quads. :) Happy flying!

I was about to download I crashed the other day and then saw Tryp which also looks amazing! Will you film that first flight? Flying in reality is very similar except there’s the added element of if you crash badly or lose it by getting stuck in a tree it’s going to cost money 😂 Also you’ll find that flying far away and then crashing means a lot of walking to get the drone… so set up turtle mode (JB has a video on that)

Welcome to the hobby! Definitely do the video and a few years later you’ll see how much you’ve improved! Try and force yourself to use the normal controller, it’s quicker to fly with the motion controller… but if you want to fly well use the normal one! Looking forward to seeing the video!

Heck yeah definitely hit the sim as much as you can and you will get more comfortable I spent about 3 hours in a sim then had a micro that I just thrashed rebuilt blew up rebuilt and wish I just spent more time in the sim because when I built a 6" I was so scared to crash it and that showed in my flying but definitely keep at it man nice video buddy 👍

Thanks! I wish the DJI goggles had a HDMI or DVI input so I could fly the sim with them on. But yeah I’m in the sim a lot especially when I finish work late or the weather is bad… I would say my real life flying has improved my sim flying too 😂

@@GarethDix I'm not sure the size of where you live but it's worth having a micro or whoop the iflight a75(caddx) is like £250 but you can fly it around your house which will be like your new sim, I'm going back to analog because all the drones are usually £100 cheaper and I'm a cheapskate

Honestly the first part is a huge struggle but then it will all click. It’s fairly dry but it’s worth going through the velocidrone training videos from the beginning, I thought I could do it without them but it helps make the basic controls make sense! Because they’re RU-vid videos you don’t even need velocidrone to learn from them 😉 But post me a link to your first real flight when you get there, I’d love to see how it goes!

Thanks for sharing your experience(s) in getting going Gareth. I can't speak for others, but I went straight into flying (the sim came a distant second) so there's no one-way that works for everyone. In principle, I do tend to agree that the sim is a good place to start. Secondly, flying a smaller machine like you are, is in a lot of ways harder than a standard 5 inch 'freestyle' quad, but this should set you up nicely for if/when you fly your first 5 inch unit. Thanks again for sharing. This hobby is so cool.

I how did your first flight go without the simulator? I really had to fight the urge to just jump in without the sim. You could see from my early simulator attempts that it probably wouldn’t have ended well 😂 I found the tiny whoops so much easier in the simulator than the 5inch quads but maybe I should give this a go again as I feel like the real life flying has improved my sim flying too!

@@GarethDix I started with a TinyWhoop, and thankfully so, as it was far more resistant to crash damage than a full 5 inch would have been. I didn't actually crash that much. My very first day with the TinyWhoop was about as bad as it got. I tried flying line-of-sight indoors and (even in stab/angle mode) it was just a diasaster. I was pretty dispondant given I had been flying other things like little helicopters and all that for a few years before-hand. But after a little perseverance, fast-forward a few weeks and I was flying in acro mode with goggles (reasonably well). I found my 'real life' flying helped me in the sim (once I finally bought one) - which is the 'normal pathway' in reverse. I'm almost 50, so sims don't really interest me that much. My age likely formed the bulk of my decision to just get straight into 'real' flying, As I'm not much of a computer gamer. I think the sim->real approach is a good one. For me, I just didn't want to 'play games on a computer' (pardon the expression) before I got into it.

I find it really hard to fly LoS the few times I’ve done it the drone was bouncing around all over the place 😂 But I understand what you meant about the sim… I really didn’t want to sit there in front of the screen playing a game I wanted to fly for real… but I had to wait for 3 weeks for the drone to arrive anyway so I figured I might as well. But yes love hearing how people got into it as there’s definitely no set formula!

I agree with your observation on Acro mode, I myself started using Angle mode because i was scared of crashing, but when i learned to use the Acro, i find it more difficult to control the Angle mode, i can feel the quad is always fighting my inputs, where as with acro, i am totally in control.

That’s exactly it… in angle or horizon it feels like the quad is fighting me with me for control rather than doing what I want it to do… I was recently in a different sim and had to get through beginner (horizon) mode to unlock acro… I looked like I had never flown a quad before 😂

I recently got the DRL Simulator and have been flying freestyle in it. I am going to get my first fpv drone pretty soon and have watched many videos like yours saying that the simulator helps a lot. Thank you for a great video! I think I am going to go with the GEPRC Phantom toothpick freestyle.

Oh cool, the transition from sim to reality is actually fairly easy but you are just more conscious of crashing which ups the stakes a little. Just learn to land in the sim which is the one thing I forgot! The only other thing is just the set up in Betaflight but once you do this once it’s much easier to do it with any other quads you buy (and I guarantee you’ll get more - I now have a flywoo firefly and a GEPRC mk5) But record your first flight and upload it and I’ll come check it out!

It’s so hard to begin with and then all of a sudden you realise you’re flying (and then you crash but a little further). Keep going though I promise it does get a lot easier!

Here's an important tip: Learn about LiPo Battery Safety and Usage. They can be finacky and light on fire. Also, if you are in the States, check out the FAA Part 107 Certification. Otherwise, outstanding work Pilot! Welcome to FPV!!!

I have a bat safe box and spent a lot of time down the YoiTube rabbit hole of LiPo safety and storage 😂 In Switzerland the drone laws here are pretty simple but have been looking into the certification for larger >4kg drones as I think there’s probably a lot I could learn from it too

Inb4 Gareth puts "FPV" in his name, lol. Yea its a great hobby, you did everything right so far. Once you get use to flying ducted quads, you should try any open prop quad. For a beginner I would recommend something in the 3 inch prop size especially considering your access to small spaces. Open props are ALOT more fast and sensitive to control inputs.

Hahaha after this video I actually considered creating a whole new channel for FPV… no one told me how addictive it was going to be (largely the reason I haven’t made any videos for a few months because I’m always flying) But yes I have a 1.5” micro that I bought to fly around the house (although it’s way too powerful) and I also have a 5” now as well because I wanted to see what it’s like before the rules change here in 2024. But you’re right about how different open props are… it’s sooooo much fun

Outdated or not they will still fly so worth keeping. The new digital systems are amazing though! If you could keep the batteries warm the footage you could get up there would be amazing!! “I tried FPV in the North Pole” that would be an instant RU-vid success!

Im have aprox 600 hours (reinstalled a few times and lost timer) on velocidrone, mostly sim racing with no irl fpv flight time. I just ordered a cinelog 25 as my first drone. Can't wait for my first flight soon. :) Will try to document! :)

If you have that much time on a sim you’ll go full send on the first flight! Just remember to practice landing in the sim… and also remember if you crash you have to go get it 😂😂 Seriously though would love to see what your first flight is like!

I can’t wait to see the video of you going from sun to DRL champion in a few months! Really though velocidrone is very accurate in terms of feel so with 100 hours you should find it really easy to make the switch. I wanted to do 50 hours but the real drone kept calling me and I wanted to see if the sim was even worth it… and it is! I still use it now when I don’t have time to go outside and fly. But yes as soon as you drop that video I’ll be the first one watching it!

I almost always fly in Acro mode today but if I want a really smooth crusisy flight, I go into Betaflight and you can change the parameters for Horizon mode to act more like Acro if you turn the strength way down and increase the angle to 90 degrees. This will still auto level but very slowly and only at near center stick. You can easily overpower the self-centering if you stay on the sticks. It's actually quite cool though still not as exhilarating as Acro. I too have the Cinerace20 (v2 Pro...analog) and love it.

@@GarethDix For clarity and reference, I run my drones with the following setting in PID Tuning under Angle/Horizon: Angle Strength: 50 (Not used) Horizon Strength: 20 Horizon Transition: 20 Angle limit: 89 I do not use Angle Mode, only Horizon and Acro. I typically fly my loose Horizon mode when I am warming up to a new area but usually switch to Acro once comfortable.

Thank you! I think flying with the PS4 remote was so hard that it made it much easier when I got the real thing 😂 But honestly the tinywhoop pack made all the difference and then racing my ghost in a level with a tight ceiling made me focus on throttle control along with being able to push the quad as fast as it would go without it actually going so fast I was trying to keep up with it. Have you tried flying for real yet?

The big difference flying for real with the goggles is the feeling of actually flying which the sim never really gives you. If you know anyone that can take you for a ride with a spare set of goggles it’s so worth it to see if you like it

I´m at about 17 hours on Liftoff now. I´m making huge progress ; I can fly fast and low, and make sharp turns. I pick out gaps in the trees, or say to myself, "Okay, I´m going to do a sharp 180 , really close to the ground at THAT tree", and I can :) I just still can´t go through the gates on tracks; but that´s ok; I don´t want to race or do fast loops and rolls. That just makes me dizzy anyway. I just want to have fun, be in control, and maybe someday make some nice videos :) @@GarethDix

I wouldn’t worry about the gates too much in lift off, head to the bando level and start flying through gaps and indoors that’ll help with real world flying much more

I got my first DJI drone (Mini 3 Pro) a few weeks ago and am enjoying it. It's led me to FPV videos on RU-vid. I'm starting to learn FPV with Drone Racing League in Acro / Rates to learn as I believe if you want to fly FPV you really want Acro / Rates mode. I've spent two evenings and find it's going relative slowly, but I did do some laps around the blimp tonight with at least modest success. I'll spend some time in Velocidrone this weekend to compare. I've decided I not going to buy an FPV drone and goggles until I've demonstrated I can fly it in the sims. I hope I'll feel beginner proficient in 10 hours, but I'm guessing a bit longer? I'm flying with a Radiomaster Zorro in the sims. I'm leaning towards Googles 2 + Motion 2 which will work with my DJI, although I'm thoroughly undecided about the Motion 2. I've not decided which FPV drone to get, but maybe something along the lines of a Mobula8 with O3 Air or similar.

yeah FPV is a completely different beast to flying a normal DJI drone especially in acro... but it is a lot more rewarding after you get through the HUGE learning curve. it's amazing that you've already started to make the jump so early after getting the mini 3 it takes most people a year or two before they even think about FPV! The DRL simulator is fun and teaches pretty well... but the physics feel weird and you don't get the same sense of speed as I think you have to be travelling pretty fast to feel like you're travelling quickly. Velocidrone is very accurate to flying in real life and although I did this in 10 hours, since then I've realised that this isn't normal with a lot of people getting about 30 hours in before being able to fly around comfortably... that said there are other people that did an hour on the sim and then went straight into flying for real! Although the motion controller will work with the DJI mini 3, it won't work with a normal FPV quad, the radiomaster Zorro will work with an FPV quad though. I'd recommend getting a smaller cinewhoop for a first quad though. although they aren't as powerful, fast or manoeuvrable as a freestyle or racing quad, they're a lot more stable, easier to control and if you get a good one it'll last a long time without needing repairs.

So is this cinerace 20, a buy and fly? I'ver flown Mavics etc for a couple years, and I really want to get into FPV, but dont know anything about building myself, and where id even start with that. I have the DJI FPV, and am flying the sim a lot at mo in preparation for Manual mode, but I want a nice little FPV that wont die if (When) I crash. I was looking at a Nazgul Evoque? But this one looks intersting seeing it here. What is the process, did you just buy this and a couple batteries and controller? Cheers for the video, youve made it same not quite as out of my reach to get into FPV properly!

Yes if you just bind it to the DJI system and you’re pretty much good to go. I went into Betaflight to set up Turtle mode (so I can flip it back over after a crash) and my arm switches for the controller. It would be easier to set up using the DJI system fully but it doesn’t have the range of crossfire in the controller I have. If you have the small DJI controller (not the big one) I don’t think this is able to bind to one of the caddx vista units (like in the Cinerace and Evoque)… only the larger DJI air unit But in terms of what to buy I think it depends on what you’re after and how you want to fly. The cinerace is great for learning as it’s very stable and the way it’s made it can take hits really well. I’ve tested this a lot over the last few weeks and it’s still flying. I like it a lot for training but it doesn’t have huge amounts of power and isn’t as agile as my other drone (flywoo firefly) but then after a few crashes I’m now resoldering the motors back to the controller already. I don’t think you could go wrong with either, the Evoque looks like it would be closer to the feel of the dji FPV… but then would you want to fly the dji FPV after you’ve flown something like that is the question 😉

I was using the little bastard to start with and was struggling with the power and as I had the Cinerace I wanted to try a micro cinewhoop so bought the micro class pack and started using the nano hawk as it’s a pusher (props underneath) and it changed my whole learning experience

Hi, one tips. Easy to forget, when im starting fpv, my friend told me to take off the googles, and hover that quad, and see, the behaviour the quad, with our eyes, not using a googles, if you can hover steady at airmode then everything will follow, if struggle with throttle, try use expo and limitation ^^ its okay,. Im starting with angle mode, and finally acro mode, and still using angle mode when im fly indoor, it helps a lot. Using acro mode instead airmode in indoor. . the phase. Enjoy.

Got less < 30h in sim, i feel very confident that i could fly very well if i got the chance. I also learned in ACRO since that is what appeal to me. Would love a 5" freestyle setup but its a bit out of reach for now. If something, i might get a controller since i feel w/e i use right now doesnt have enough resolution for pushing things further.

You can always get a 5in in the future… it’s worth getting a proper radio though as the resolution of the gimbals (I’m assuming you’re using a gaming controller) is so much better. You’ll find it weird to control at first but after about 30mins to an hour you’ll find it much easier to fly with. But take the jump into a real flight you’ll love it!

I’ve been flying drones for 20 years. I’ve owned the inspire, inspire pro, the inspire 2. It’s so true… having full control with no automatic assistance was a huge shock when I first started but the best thing is that once you get over the initial pain of trying to get it off the ground and control it… the improvements start to come very quickly! if you crash a lot, please be aware if you experienced any reduced vtx range, you should check the vtx antenna first, cinerace20 antenna break easily, a small crash into concrete can easily affect the video range

So I found it easier to get the tiny whoop pack and fly with the Mobula6 it’s not the fastest quad but if you get it into a tight space it lets you fly without going too fast and out of control even at full throttle. But reduce your camera angle when you start flying. The higher the camera angle the faster you have to go for fly in a straight line… if you bring that down (page down button I think) to about 10 degrees it will be much easier to control

Just fly with low camera tilt in the beginning (makes you fly a bit slower) Crashing is just a part of it , but I'm willing to bet you'll actually crasch less with a 5-inch freestyle quad than the whoop. Micro quads (with a few exceptions) and whoops of all kinds generally flies and handles worse than a bit bigger quad.

The talk of acro makes me think of one part of the hobby that I am not fond of, that of the 'acro snobbery' that I have come across in certain circles. I don't care how people fly, if they don't fly acro, it doesn't affect me. If they're having fun, awesome! I do think that we sometimes focus a bit too much on the "you need to learn to fly acro" thing so early on. Have fun, take your time, enjoy the hobby for what it is, people playing with toys.

I think it’s probably because you have that much control it’s like learning to fly without the stabilisers on a bike or learning to drive a manual gearbox. Some people find it easier to learn full control and then dial it back when needed others need that extra help to start and reduce it over time. For me I’m still struggling with angle/horizon but someone here in the comments gave me some settings to change on my quad to make that hopefully work a little easier

My exact drone wasn’t available in the simulator so I used something I thought would be similar and bought the tiny whoop pack for velocidrone. As it turns out it was fairly close to the real thing the difference being the throttle response was a little quicker on the real thing, but you get used to adjusting to that the more you fly different drones in the sim

Yep, simulator is so f***ing important! I don't know why so many beginners don't believe that. I have spent around 20-30 hours on simulator befor going out with the real drone - mainly because of my controller arrived before my drone did. And I was as well too excited as you were and started with PS controller on sim because my proper RC controller was still on the way back then :D Thank you for showing your first steps with sim! Hopefully many beginners will see your video and will get the message before they destroy their quads during the first flight or worse hurt anybody :)

The simulator suprisingly worked, I gave it 15 hrs on the sim and went right into a 5 inch drone and had no problems. So I recommend guys getting into Fpv to practice on the sim first.

I'm trying to use DRL to learn, but it feels like it drifts to the side agents it should not be drifting. Is the simulator accurate to real life? I keep hoping it will be more predictable IRL.

I’ve started playing around with DRL as my brother is using it to learn. Honestly the physics are a little weird and you can’t get a feel for the speed properly. But the tutorials are really nice I wish velocidrone, trryp or lift off did as good a job. Once you have got used to the controls it’s worth looking at velocidrone as the physics feel much closer to real life. The drifting might be caused by the calibration of your radio… recalibrate it and see if that fixes the issue. I had to recalibrate mine 3 times in DRL because I kept messing it up

ngl, I didn't enjoy my first flight on my babyApe toothpick cause it was too fast and I got scared when I tried to steer it line of sight and it felt like i was gonna lose it. thankfully, i later got a cinewhoop with a cinematic preset rc_link and low kv motors and it was wayyy more enjoyable for a newb. Will say that landing, camera angle dynamics, and auw handling are things the simulator can't really prepare you for. the additional weight of batteries makes it hard to land, if your camera angle doesn't match what you practiced for on sim you are in for a treat, and going gaps seems impossible since you don't see anything but the video frame so it's hit or miss(usually hit something alright:)

I know this question is unrelated to this video? but do you think it is more worth it to buy an Onsra BC 2 for £1099 or a BC 3 for £1330?

I haven’t had a chance to try the BC3 yet but I think it really depends on what you want/need. The BC2 is very capable and I still love mine, but if you prefer to travel fast in a straight line or want to be able to customise the power and braking then the BC3 would probably be better. The BC2 is still a very capable board though, and although it’s running a standard hobbywing ESC that you can’t customise and can’t put out as much power as the new Orion ESC from Onsra, it’s very reliable. I think from my BC1 and BC2 I’ve never had a disconnect happen. I’m not saying the new ESC in the BC3 isn’t reliable but we’ll have to see what happens.

Just stick with acro, relying on angle/horizon is a good way to learn bad habits! The only time I'd recommend a stability mode is indoor tiny whoops races, and if your looking to get footage, stability modes will absolutely ruin your shot!

@@GarethDix nah, your flying is way less smooth in angle because you are constantly 'fighting' your quad to keep it in the right position. Try it out, watch the video back, and you'll see exactly what I mean

this is also the reason I think I need to get into larger drones… I’m used to soldering but on these micro drones my sausage fingers aren’t delicate enough to make this tiny soldering easy 😂😂

I'm a beginner as well but not a total beginner. I recommend flying and crashing as much as possible. The more you fly the better you get the better you get the more you will want to fly.

This is solid advice… and 1.5 years later I still crash a lot every time I go flying (repairs are just part of the fun now)

It's easiest to learn in acro. Harder to break yourself from the auto leveling of angle and horizon. Nice job

Anyone doubting the validity of learning on a sim: depending on the quad in question, just 10 hours is probably over 200 battery packs.

I meant the car park track that you used in the video, but I found it 💪 you were right it’s challenging, have difficulties to manage my hight, I always bump either into the ceiling or onto the ground. I spent 4 hours yesterday trying. Getting better but not great just yet 😅

Honestly if you can fly that course you’ll find everything so much easier. Not sure if you have the tiny whoop pack but it’s worth trying as the larger/faster drones are really difficult in that right space. The alternative is to adjust the throttle curves in the set up so the acceleration isn’t so linear (meaning you can move the stick a little and the quad doesn’t shoot straight off at high speed) - it’s a good thing to learn for when you take a real quad out and need to tone it down in betaflight

OK. After 11hours and 34 mins I can fly a semi-decent 54 sec on this track without crash and this cark park track improved my skills tremendously. I would love to see more FPV content

I really like it, I still have mine… that said a lot of the new whoops that have been released in the last few months would also be pretty good i.e the BetaFpv Pavo pico, Flywoo flylens 85, GEPRC dark star etc. They’re lighter and more agile and the ducts are a lot lower so don’t get as affected by the wind. They also all take a 2s battery instead of 4s so the investment should be slightly lower too. If you’re flying DJI I would personally avoid getting something with an O3 as a first drone and stick with a Vista/Wasp. I just bought my brother one of these whoops as his first and he somehow managed to destroy the camera lens on the first day… luckily it’s a vista so the lens screws off and you can put a new one on for $10

The tiny whoop pack for velocidrone was pretty accurate feeling to this quad. I have a GEPRC mk5 now but if the rules weren’t changing here for 250g+ quads the roma would have been my next purchase

I never touched a sim just got a tinyhawk to fly around in the house. Started on angle mode. 2 years later I’m ripping Bandos with a 5 inch in full acro. Can’t fly angle no more it’s fighting against you constantly

Yes that’s how I felt trying this in angle mode… it was like trying to walk a puppy that wanted to go somewhere else and kept fighting against me. I really want to fly around my apartment but in Switzerland noise is a real concern 🤦🏻‍♂️
