Small game season conjures memories of squirrels in the tree tops, snow on the ground, Beagles on the chase, and lest we forget, bunny hunts. More family memories have been built around rabbit hunts and the subsequent country game feeds for decades. That’s a tradition we’d love to see preserved for generations. In the spirit of organic white cottontail meat for the stew pot, Guns.com brings you three of our favorite guns for bagging bunnies.
Should you choose to go the route of the baby .410 bore, there are more options today than ever before. Aside from the single-shot .410 with which I claimed my first small game, my current favorite is the non-traditional among the bunch: the Henry lever action.
The 24-inch round-barreled Henry holds five shots of 2.5-inch .410 and ships with a single Invector-style full-choke tube. Patterns are solid and true, more than enough to make a clean snap shot on a moving rabbit. Weighing in at 7.5 pounds, this lever gun is the heftiest of the three, yet balances and shoulders very well.
Though MSRP on the Henry .410 is steep at over nine bills, the guns are still selling as fast as they hit store shelves even several years after release, because, well, they’re just plain fun to shoot. Though the .410 bore is often considered too small for longer-distance rabbit shooting, it excels inside 30 yards, especially with the full choke installed in the Henry from the factory, and the five-round tube blows single-shots out of the water - and rabbit woods.
For some reason, the 28 gauges just never seem to get their due. It is an excellent, low-recoiling round, and with the right load, can nearly reach the potential of the 20-gauges. Further, while we’re speaking of over-unders, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a fine looking - and performing - double in the field.
The CZ shotgun is ideal in both ways. Our Woodcock O/U wears 28-inch vent rib barrels and shipped with five interchangeable chokes. The single trigger, pistol grip stock style, and a safety doubling as a selector all suit my personal preferences. Best of all, this small-framed marvel weighs in under 6 pounds, making it a joy to tote through the brush lines. It is one of the best-balancing doubles I’ve hunted with, fits me well with its LOP and looks good doing it.
While the Woodcock has since been discontinued - it can still be found on the used market - CZ still offers a full line of O/U’s and SxS shotguns from affordable to elegant, with plenty of middle ground as well. The company has everything from wing shooting to bunny-busting covered, and in every gauge besides.
If you fancy slide action shotguns and can run a pump quickly and remain on target, that is fantastic. Many shooters, however, would be much better served with a semi-auto, but rule out these rapid actions because of assumed higher cost. Companies like TriStar, however, offer incredibly budget-friendly options.
The Viper G2 line of semi-automatic actions is not only cost-effective, but crock-pot effective as well. If looks are important too, step up to the Bronze model we have here, with the subdued golden finish and high gloss Turkish walnut furniture, making the shotgun attractive as well as efficient.
Our G2 Bronze swings and points well with a 26-inch ventilated rib barrel. Three interchangeable chokes make adjusting to different hunting scenarios and even clay shooting a breeze. A red fiber optic front sight is quick to acquire in the field. Having a 3-inch chamber means the gas gun is capable of handling most any 20-gauge load. At just over 6 pounds, the G2 Bronze is easy enough to carry at the ready, and larger shooters will welcome the included shims for adjusting the length-of-pull. In the end, a gun that fits well and is inexpensive enough to beat around brushy rabbit-territory is a win all the way around.
Single shots are grand, and so is granddaddy’s hand-me-down beater pump shotgun. The aforementioned trio of actions-lever, break double, and semi-auto-in three different gauges are all more than capable of pulling their weight in rabbit country. The nice thing is, there’s no singular answer to the best gun to use for any game. Regardless of each individual hunter’s choice, the most important thing is that the gun fit the shooter, and that it be lightweight and comfortable enough to carry at the ready all day afield, to make a clean shot on oft fast-moving prey.
We hope you enjoyed a look into a few of our favorite modern selections. No matter your choice of long gun, when you hit the small game woods this season, you’ve already won. We’d enjoy hearing about your choice of make, gauge, and small game memories. Happy Hunting!

The problem with both the .410 and the 28 gauge is the cost of the ammo. You are much better using light loads in a 20 gauge. I use a Remington Model 17 pump, or a Benelli Montefeltro in 20 gauge.

I use 2 guns I got from my great grandpa when he was alive. He gave me his Remington 1100 LT-20, and when he passed away I got his Remington 1100 28 gauge. They are both the best rabbit guns I’ve ever used. They are pretty heavy, but the way they feel when throwing them up and pulling the trigger makes it worth the extra pounds. I always bring the 20 gauge for hunting woods where I have to shoot through brush, and the 28 for hunting fields. I highly recommend the 1100 for rabbits (if not I also like my Benelli Legacy 20 gauge and my Ithaca SKB 200e 20 gauge, so those are some other options)

A $700 gun is absolutely not a drag around the woods gun. In my humble opinion. A Ruger 10/22 or a Mossberg 500 do it for me.

There are plenty of hunters that carry around $1000+ shotguns/riffle through the woods. When you get up in the really pricey shotguns you'll see why they are that expensive

@@PistolB97 They are that expensive in part of brand name. Also who wants to ding up an $10,000 Holland and Holland for hunting (even if they were made for that). I know that's an extreme unrealistic example, but you get the point. Some guns become safe queens, which is why I refuse to own one.

Was on RU-vid looking a rabbit hunting videos came across this video I myself am a shotgun nerd I own over 30+ shoguns mostly collect but I do use a dozen or so for rabbits hunting every year .... I personally own Tristar Viper G2 bronze model , also own CZ premier 28GA O/U (both are great guns!) .... beware a lot of hunting loads claiming they are “heavy” “high brass” I found a lot shells today are medium brass or high brass when they really ain’t nothing but a skimpy low cheap shell that shoots around 1200FPS , All I shoot is a true hard hitting High brass #5 loads (1295-1300 FPS) on rabbits for over 30 years of rabbit hunting and training beagles best choke tubes over dogs IC or modify in 16GA and 20GA .... 28GA and .410 Modify and full were best chokes as for shot size the bigger the better pass through no BBS in meat ... if you’re “jump shooting” rabbits with no dog use the most open choke you have cause you’re gonna blow blow up rabbits back legs as they are running from you shots are real quick and close ... with dogs most of shot on rabbits are in front and head as rabbit is running towards you with dogs chasing it from behind

The rabbits we shoot are at a max distance of 30 yards. So i bought backpacker single shot 410. IGA AGOUCHA 3 inch chambers. It only has a 12 barrel and it has a brass bead sight. Also came with a rubber recoil pad. Its a very loud gun and i have to use a 6oclock hold on everything but it shoots perfect bullseye everytime . It must be the short barrel which makes point of aim point of impact afew inches high.

With a27inch barrel that I got at the flea market for$80 a Rem. 870 20Ga. I got for used for $240and a trade of a S&W mod34 .22lr w/ 4 inch barrel and mostly of the blueing gone on the barrel and cil. My favorite is an old Montgomery Ward 20 Gauge Side by Side. I call it the Elmer Fudd. Let me tell you, it's a rabbit killer, not even Bugs Bunny would get away with this shotgun. I went in to my local gun store to buy a semi 20 gauge, but the price was so expensive, I asked the owner if he had anything back there that was affordable. He gave it to me for $300, it was Christmas he said, and I have never been more happier with that tool. Well, I would like to get a Henry Lever 410, and a 45-70, and a Colt 1911, and a Springfield 1903-A3... Sorry, but it's like a tattoo, once you get one, you need at least minimum 50 to be happy. Then you get bored, and you end up going to a gun show, and that when the wife puts down her foot.

I want to see the industry bring back several different gauge shotguns within reason. Would like to see the 8 gauge, 14 gauge, 24 gauge and even a 32 gauge. It won’t be long before the 16 will become obsolete. We shouldn’t let this happen. There’s a lot more different calipers out there and it wouldn’t be wrong to bring any of them back. Also recently purchased a 38/55 lever action and absolutely love it

8 gauge will never come back, probably. Nor will the 4 gauge. There considered "too powerful" for what a hunter needs the woods. I say bullshit. The restriction mostly has to do with market hunting, where men would shoot literal cannons into flocks of ducks. That isn't a thing anymore.

@@stevenbodum3405 Well rabbits here in Greece are in different size depending where you are, in Aegian sea islands are around 1,5 kilo, where I live mainland rabbits are 4-5 kilos so I have to use 3-4 shot size like I do with hare or mallards so I only have to trust 1 choice of cartridge for all. As about the choke it depends from terrain, as about rabbits when stalking I go like I wrote, but whun I hunt with dogs both barrels are wider than 1/2 choke. Wood pigeon I use 34-36 grams 6 size, woodcock thrush snipe and quail I use 9 size 32-34 grams. Cheers from Greece.

@@stevenbodum3405 Here in Greece right about now there is a big migration of wood pigeons heading south right to Egypt through mediterranean sea like all other migrating birds, you can see them coming like "blanket" as the locals call them. In a couple of weeks I'll start woodcock hunting in deep forests, this is my personal favorite to be in such places...
