Let's talk how to develop a simple musical idea into a full epic cinematic orchestral piece. I give you insights into the creative process behind "Pluto," an enchanting composition from my 'The Solar System' collaboration project, scheduled for release in March 2024. Let's take a simple yet captivating chord progression and structure it to an epic orchestral track.
Exploring the Musical Evolution
We kick things off by introducing "Pluto" and its core musical idea, a beautifully simple chord progression that serves as the foundation of our orchestral adventure.
Crafting the Atmospheric Prelude
Our creative journey begins with an in-depth exploration of the introduction. We discuss the art of setting the mood using sound design elements and textures while unveiling the main theme through the ethereal sounds of a piano.
Building to Energetic Crescendo
As the narrative unfolds, we guide you through an energetic build-up section where the orchestra takes center stage. Witness strings crafting mesmerizing ostinatos, woodwinds carrying the main melody, and a powerful transition that fuels the anticipation.
Epic Section A: Unleashing the Orchestra
Prepare to be swept away as we enter Epic Section A. Horns take the spotlight, trumpets contribute counter melodies, and the percussion section adds a burst of energy that elevates the composition to new heights.
Epic Section B: Maximum Epicness
Hold on to your seats as we turn the epicness dial to eleven with the introduction of Epic Section B. This thrilling segment showcases the full might of the orchestra and a jaw-dropping transition inspired by EDM, leading to a grand choir entrance.
Emotional Outro: A Heartfelt Farewell
Our epic journey concludes with a heartwarming emotional outro, allowing listeners to bask in the afterglow of the epic musical adventure they've experienced.
A Sneak Peek at the Almost Finished Piece
To top it all off, we offer an exclusive playthrough of the nearly finished composition. While mixing and mastering may require some final touches, you'll get a glimpse of the musical magic that awaits in "Pluto."
Don't miss this golden opportunity to explore the secrets of orchestration, composition, and epic music creation. Join us as we unravel the birth of "Pluto" within 'The Solar System' project, a true testament to the art of musical storytelling. 🌌🎶

Through this example I think I'm finally starting understand how and why a complicated chord progression is not necessary in order to create an interesting piece. It really is all in the arrangement. As long that keeps evolving, the song can be interesting even with just 4 chords. For some reason, I've not previously seen a good example of it, but you kind of unlocked it for me. Thank you.

Really great stuff Samuel! Helpful tips well explained. I know one of my issues is keeping a piece structured. It is too easy to wander of and confuse everyone, so this type of video is really useful. Looking forward to The Solar System project, looks to be very interesting.

Yes. Structure is extremely helpful to craft a complete piece of music. And I struggle often myself. There are many many options. This is one. I am really looking forward to The Solar System. Big thank's to www.youtube.com/@SettingSunTear for bringing us together, the idea etc...

Hi Samuel... I noticed that one of your favorite composers is Michael Giacchino. Back in about 2004 I got to help him put together his first 'garage studio' in LA. At the time he was scoring the show 'Alias'... every other week was either live orchestra or synth, so the budget was pretty good... yet the reason for working in his converted garage was to save money from his budget. He was a really nice guy and easy to be around. Given the time, the tools he used were still high end, but also given the time, they were nothing like they are now. Anyway... thought you'd enjoy hearing that. He's gone so much farther now in his career that it's crazy, but it was fun to see him near the beginning of his career. Cheers!

cool! two things came to my mind... it's just me, I know, but maybe I prefer for melody (violin) first go to base note F up (+1 octave), and then where you have it. not sure, maybe not. did you consider it? and guitar arpeggio in the end sounds a little off. like it's constantly behind. maybe to play with a little negative delay for the track in Inspector? but I'm nitpicking, I know :) sorry about it :)

Don't apologize for listening critically at my piece and giving valuable feedback. I see your point. Generally speaking, I think the melodic theme could use a bit more variation here and there. The guitars, I don't know. I tried really hard, but I did find they sounded in time to me. Could be me not having a properly trained sense of rythm, though. Something I notice time and time again, when I decide to hit that quantize button, because I apparently can't play well enough... Anyways... What someone else suggested was also to use modulation. I will be exploring both, melodic variations and modulations as option in the future. Thank you very much!
