Hi!
In this video I restorate old finnish leuku knife. Old Leuku didn´t have sheath, handle was in bad shape and the blade was broken. New handle is made out of reindeer antler and birch bark. The handle rivet washer is made out of nickel silver.

Very skillfully done and beautiful knife and sheath, but I hate to see the history of the old knives taken away, especially when they could be preserved and still be eminently useable. Remarkable things can be done with old leather handles with the right procedures. Inserting a new leather washer or two and treating the leather has restored old handles for me. I suppose because I am old I appreciate trying to preserve old things with a character that can never be regained once it is taken away. Of course, sir, it is your knife and not mine, but this is the comment section. 'Just one dried up old man's opinion. Thanks.

Hi! and thanks for your comment. I know exactly what you mean and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Thanks for shearing that. I wanted to create something new to this beautiful leuku blade. Now the handle looks and feels like it is my own creation and how I want it to be. Of course the old handle could have been still restorated as you decribed. I´m not huge fan of leather as a handle material aswell.

@@kiehicraft Thanks friend. I'm glad you did not misunderstand. I "customize" many older knives also. I want to try a birch bark handle myself. I am currently forging mostly puukko style blades and I have grown to appreciate this style of knife. Keep up the great videos. Thanks. Rick Trumbo, Kentucky, U.S.A.

Great video turned out awesome, im working on a blade very similar was going to do a brass bolster but after watching this may do antler instead, really like the looks of the way yours turned out!

Thanks! Antler is good choice for the bolster :) takes a bit more work to get tight fit but it is worth it!

Amazing restoration. You gave it a second life. Awesome work. I wondered, what kind of glue was used, back in time (early/mid 20th century I mean) to stack the layers of birch bark ?
@kiehicraft
@kiehicraft 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! No glue was used back in time. Birch bark layers were pressed tight and heated for removing excess moisture before riveting.

Great video man. The leuku turned out beautiful! Myself, I'm trying to do something similar with reindeer antler and leather, but I can't find anything online. Could you tell me where did you get reindeer antler, please? Thank you. Cheers!

Hi.In the late sixties I worked with a Norwegian guy who described Leuku as being about 8 inches long.Now I see examples of a much broader range than I had thought he meant.What size do you think was most commonly used by Sami people.Both length and thickness of blade.
@kiehicraft
@kiehicraft Месяц назад
Hi! The function of the leuku is to act as a billhook and therefore it is good for it to have size and mass. The heavier it is, the easier it is to cut wood. I think that the range of the lenght is somewhere between 160-300mm and the thickness 4-5mm.
