How do we go from some lovely storyboards to actual motion design or animation? Taking this from static images is the critical final stage as we enter actual production. Like any step of this process, it doesn't happen in just one big jump. In this video we will go through the process:
1. Assess the challenges presented in storyboards
2. Organize our animation for efficient production
3. Work from broad movements to specific details

Such a great series - these are the things that aren't talked about as often, and are obviously more abstract and difficult, so I appreciate you putting in all the work to outline this process. Excellent work as always.

Just wanted to say that I am currently doing my design school finals (which includes creating a complete webdesign concept/mockup) and I remembered your moodboard video (and milanote) which helped me greatly in my first two days!

Geez the whole series of the tutorials is just so cool, I love how the way things are more mindset based, like you explain why you do it in this way while also talked about how people could accomplish it in an alternative way. This kind of workflow experience is what I've been looking for for so long. Thanks so much! 🙂

Your workflow looks really good. I guess that you're working with higher paying customers, right? How much do you take for making such a project? Or are you billing daily/hourly? Do you work as a freelancer or have you founded your own business? I'm just curious scince i'm gonna start my business soon... :D Am from germany btw! Love your videos!
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 5 лет назад
That's quite a lot of Qs. I'll see if I can A them. 1.I work for all kinds of customers. But any project you do should make use of pre-production. It actually takes less time when you plan effectively before you start doing things. Even just an hour or two to know what you're doing is better than nothing. It also prevents cost overrun. 2. I bill out depending on the client and project. For some a day rate makes sense. Some need it as an hourly breakdown. Others are a flat fee for the deliverables. It works out to the same for my time in the end. 3. I do work freelance for clients and I do own my own business. It has one employee who is me. I'm also all the other parts of that business. 4. I'm glad you like the videos. If you have more questions holler at me.

Great tutorial as always! Any tips on losing steam as you move from storyboarding to getting into after effects? I feel like I always have a lot of ideas in the pre production phase but sometimes don’t follow through as much as I’d like and get hung up as I transition to after effects.
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 5 лет назад
Interesting. Are you working from large moves and layering on detail? Working sequentially? How do you attack a large piece when you move from pre-production currently?
@NateandNoahTryLife
@NateandNoahTryLife 5 лет назад
Currently I try to move from drawings to getting the rough motions in after effects, then doing color and secondary motions and all that stuff after. I feel like I’m most likely to give up if I can’t get the scene’s primary motion looking how I like, but I think a lot of the times when I stick with it the secondary motions, color and sound effects help sell things.
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 5 лет назад
@@NateandNoahTryLife So is it lack of personal interest in the project or scene? Do you feel uninspired once you start in on a scene? That could mean you should be doing something different and throwing away ideas that don't work, rather than forcing ideas that are just filling time.
@NateandNoahTryLife
@NateandNoahTryLife 5 лет назад
ECAbrams yeah, that sounds about right! I guess I’ll spend more time on the drawing board. Thank you!
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 5 лет назад
Often if you find scenes aren't working I advise going even further back in the process and seeing is a scene can be removed or edited down. I often find areas of "filler" just need to go completely rather than be struggled through or "fixed" at the end of the process. I hope that helps!

This video is just amazing and very helpful. I want to ask the designs are made on illustrator first or directly in after effects?
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 5 лет назад
It's a combination of both. It really depends on what will happen with the assets later. This piece also has very simple geometry so we can make many things in Ae very fast. Typically though I make at least the first version of a thing in illustrator. It may be broken apart or recreated in Ae during production.

Do you have a rule in choosing a color palette or just use what looks nice?
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 5 лет назад
There are specific colour rules that are worth exploring. Complementary colours, harmonies, contrast. Those kinds of rules can help you build a palette. But typically there is an intention behind colour choice. Rather than what looks nice, we want to choose colours that satisfy our goals for a piece. If that makes sense?

The boards you have imported were in a PNG format. How and where did you get the vector version for each board?
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 2 года назад
I drew these in Adobe Illustrator. Is that what you mean?
@tzachikk
@tzachikk 2 года назад
@@ECAbrams yes But I unable to repeat what you did. In the video you have exported PNG files from Illustrator and then imported these PNG to After effects. Then these files are not vectors anymore.
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 2 года назад
@@tzachikk I'm not sure I'm following you. I did not intend for people to copy the example piece by piece to generate the exact animation. This is meant to teach a process so you can create your own unique works.
@tzachikk
@tzachikk 2 года назад
@@ECAbrams First thank you for taking the time to help. That's impressive. Secondaly, im not intresseted in copiying your piece - it's the process. In 03:22 you imported pngs and put them into a scene (03:30). Then in 07:03 you have opended this scene and there were shape layers instaed for the imported png. Did I miss something? Where did you exchange the png in the scene with shape layers?
@ECAbrams
@ECAbrams 2 года назад
@@tzachikk In after effects you can import a .ai file and convert the vector assets into vector shape layers. I didn't show it in this video because that process is not integral to what is being shown. Many user might not even be storyboarding with vector programs. And, even if they are, converting the paths from Ai to Ae may not be the ideal method for animating the scenes. Most often we have to recreate the content of a storyboard inside after effects using other methods to create the desired style and movement because storyboards are usually very rough sketches. But, if you would like to import a .ai file, the layers can be converted by right clicking and selecting create > create shapes from vector layer. I hope that helps.
