Artist Keith Haring took the New York City subway system by storm in the 1980s, with his drawings appearing on the walls of hundreds of stations. His art is known for expressing concepts of death, sexuality and war. Charles Osgood takes a look at how Haring managed to get his works up, in this profile first broadcast on the "CBS Evening News" on October 20, 1982.

I'm not so sure about him "fitting in today" - for me, his stuff look like it's from the late 80's and early 90's, and like it couldn't have been done at any other time. Im glad you think it doesn't look out of place today, as his stuff is great.

Keith Haring garnered nuff respects from graffiti writers in NYC because he was "All City". This is a term given to someone whose tags or drawings appeared in every borough, on every subway station in the city. I was a teenager, growing up in NYC when I started noticing the chalk drawings in almost every subway station blackboard advertising spaces and wondered who was that, and thinking this person is up everywhere. He definitely was All City.

These days of New York are over. You wouldn't be able to draw on the material they use for advertisements. City government, local police, the MTA, and I conjecture a few other entities have successfully repressed much of the artistic expression that made New York New York. I guess there's the Banksy dude.
