Brownells Gun Tech Keith Ford is at Rock Island Auctions to show us two rarities. First, a beautifully preserved civilian Browning BAR - yes, before the Gun Control Act of 1934, a private citizen could legally own a fully automatic firearm. The BAR was also the preferred firearm of a number of Gangster Era public enemies, including Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. In response to criminals' use of the BAR, Colt developed their R80 Monitor for law enforcement use. The Monitor is a shorter, more maneuverable BAR with a pistol grip and Cutts Compensator up front on the 18.5" barrel. At least one member the posse of law enforcement officers who brought down Bonnie and Clyde in that shootout on a lonely Louisiana back road in May 1934 was armed with a Colt Monitor. Civilian-legal Monitors are even rarer than BARs - the very clean example Keith shows us is worth about $120,000!

Very cool video. When I was in the Army, one of the base museums brought out their collection for a weapons shoot. I had the chance to fire a magazine of .30-06 through a Colt Monitor.

I was just about to type the same thing. And for the record I always hear people (who know nothing of guns) talk about gangsters in the thirties with tommy guns and automatic weapons and how the police departments were so badly outgunned. I’ve held a few reproduction tommies and a few originals, and for the life of me I cannot imagine anyone sane or insane walking around with almost thirty pounds (Thompson with fully loaded 50rd drum) worth of gun for even half an hour let alone all day as Hollywood portrays it (even back then Hollywood was responsible for that image to the public).

Nice guns, check the facts though, there was NO colt monitor used in the Bonnie/Clyde shooting, there was a BAR used by Ted Hinton.

I thought Frank Hamer had a Monitor at that shootout, or was the Monitor given to Hamer after that? What I do know is that same Monitor is at the DPS museum in Waco

Thank you. Ted's BAR is in the reenactment. Frank Hamer, Henderson Jordan and Preston Oakley used Remington Model Eight rifles. Maney Gault and Robert [Bob] Alcorn used Model Eleven shotguns. As you said, Ted Hinton was the only one who had a fully automatic firearm, the BAR. Ted as assigned to take out the engine.

Man you Yanks are lucky.... You got companies like Brownells and the freedom to actually purchase from them... Some of us stuck in European countries like Serbia and the like can only dream of such things... Seriously...

You can't "just buy these". Any automatic weapon is illegal to purchase unless you have a very difficult to obtain license and you may not own anything automatic manufactured after 1986. We have enough gun deaths in the USA and are trying like hell to put in sensible gun laws to prevent mass shootings that seem to happen every week here.

It always cracks me up how these old boys play this kind of music and talk the way they do (like they're talking about a hunting rifle) and then they bring out a weapon system that's known for stacking bodies and they even tell stories about it too 😂😂

Hahaha! That’s spot on man. I love Automatic Rifles, but it’s always funny when people present them like you said. They can be fun for target practice, but these weapons are made for war and stacking bodies, and seeing people talk to them like they’re just a casual hunting rifle you can purchase and walk around with is comedy!
