Keith and Steve are back at Rock Island Auction Co. because they got a line on a remarkable custom revolver. It has the power of a .45-70 rifle in a single action revolver you can carry in your belt holster all day. It's an original revolver by John Linebaugh Custom Firearms of Cody, Wyoming, chambered in, of course, .500 Linebaugh. This is one powerful wheelgun, and though it weighs LESS than a .44 Magnum, it will propel a 440-grain bullet at 1,300-1,400 fps. The gun is built on a Ruger® Blackhawk® Bisley with the frame opened up to accommodate the larger, unfluted, 5-round cylinder made by Linebaugh. The front sight is specially locked down on the custom barrel so it doesn't part ways with the rest of the gun under recoil. This is why the gun also has a Keith-style No. 5 base pin anchored down by a setscrew. Steve gives us some history on the .500 Linebaugh cartridge, which has been used to take just about any big game you can name. Elmer Keith would've loved it! But don't let the awe-inspiring power of the ammo overshadow the quality of the custom work on the Rock Island revolver.

I remember ordering my 500 in 1990 it took 18 months to come well worth the wait. Shooting full loads was to say the least painful after 5 rounds I had a reduced load at 1000 fps that was still a hand full but manageable letting my friends shoot it after one or two rounds most refused to shoot it again. Sadly I fell on hard times in the late 90s and had to sell it, what I got for it saved my family for 3 month till times got better. Side note I've shot the 475 and 500 S&Ws at full power the 500 Linebaugh is still the King hands down.

In this day and age of 500 Smith this, 500 Smith that, it's nice to see that someone remembers the Linebaugh Rugers! I remember when the article came out on him and his 475 Linebaugh round, designed for handgun hunting lions, IIRC. Of course then, toward the end, they casually mention that if this brick vaporizing piece wasn't enough for you, he could make you a 500 Linebaugh... Never seen one outside that article until now. Thanks, guys.

I was in the Worland Wyoming range shooting my 5" S&W 629 Classic with 300 gr bear loads, when John walked up and asked us if we wanted to shoot a .500 Linebaugh. We said, "Sure!" 😁 I think maybe he was trying to drum up some business. I shot a cylinder worth, didn't seem much worse than my 629 (that Ruger grip frame is magic, although I'm sure it must have been light loads too). John's a real nice guy, BTW. I have long wished I had one for myself, but never quite could have afforded it. But those guns are truly special...

His load data for 45 Colt in the Ruger is still good to this day. I have been using his loads in my Ruger Bisley for years.

Where can his load data be found?

@@ianscott4543 His heavy load data is meant only for his rebuilt guns, which have the tight tolerances necessary to stand those pressures. Don't use those loads in ordinary Rugers.

How does this compare to full house 500 S&W for both recoil and power on target.
@johnmollet2637
@johnmollet2637 2 года назад
So I have a serious question. How would anyone compare the recoil on one of these to say a .500 Smith & Wesson with a 4" barrel? I know it will be different because the hump on the Smith's back strap stops a lot of rotation.
@docholliday3273

About the same. Only two guns I won't shoot....a S&W 500 magnum and a Walter PPK. Has to be the shape/size of my hands because I shoot 44 mags all the time. Add to that list any 45-70. My old shoulder just won't take it....why I shoot at max 308 and 6.8 SPC.

The .500 will have less recoil since the handgun is a lot heavier. My wife shoots the S&W .500 with zero problems..

My dad always said "" son if the 44 mag won't do it , you best leave it alone""". And he was right then and he's right now. I got on a chat. And over 20 people were saying how they wouldn't dare shoot a black bear or grizzly with a little Ar -15. And I was like ""huh"". I would. If it will go 3000 fps and penetrate 1/4 inch steel . Then it'll penetrate a bear . It'll go through the skull and pop out the other side. That's why so many Alaskans carry them. It's amazing how people think . Just because it's bigger , doesn't make it better. Peace.
