At just 23 years of age and without a Test century to his name, Brian Lara strode onto the SCG. By the time he'd left it, he was a legend after scoring 277 off 372 balls.
The Truth Hurts Mate yes I’m with you because in Australia no one has done so far. I’m 51 and watching cricket since I was 12-13 years old but this inning was a unique one. No one has ever played and no one will get his first hundred that way in Aussie wickets.
When lara was just 18 years of age he hit 98 runs for Trinidad &Tobago vs Barbados against west indies great fast bowlers joel garner and malcolm Marshall
Have to agree. Remember this vividly and he never looked like going out. Been other great knocks in pressure situations but this is probably my favourite as well
When he square cuts, it sounds like a shotgun going off! As an Englishman, I just adored the Windies team of the 70s and 80s, ans into the Lara era. It is my fond hope that they make a comeback.
Yeh, the run was his call but he was sent back by a lazy and selfish partner. Even if it was a bad call his partner should have sacrificed himself. Lara could have made a triple century haing jus scored his maiden test .... who does that!!??
@@abbyallen7848 yeah feel bad for him , could have been only player to score three Triple hundreds Of course Sehwag was closest He was out on 293 on verge of third Triple Hundred
I think that runout on 277 might be the inspiration and hunger that kept him alive to score 375 and 400 later. Karun Nair also scored 300 as his maiden 100 but later he never even got to a 50...
Brian Charles Lara became a household name in Australia after this knock. The world knew that a legend had arrived and within a few months from this knock he became extremely popular across the world with his name echoing everywhere.
Lara was the most elegant and graceful batsman I had the privilege to watch. In a West Indies team that was terrible from the early 2000s, he did this so so often That backlift, that driving. Absolutely brilliant player
Actually Sachin literally invented two shots of his own … that very fine paddle sweep and that late cut off the bouncer … Sachin had every shot in his book and he could toy around the same ball in at least 5 different directions - Mike Hussey says this
Lara had his unique style no doubt but he didn’t toy around and improvised … in fact he played true classical shots with extreme power and flawless timing.
The way LARA played spin bowling was PHENOMENAL... He had trained on Fast bowling attack like Walsh, Ambrose... But Facing Spin balls just like anything
Australian fans are generous and acknowledge even when the opposition plays well. Something I've witnessed watching matches played in Australia on tv ☺
not only Australian, but all white people are generous, not only in cricket but in all walks of life they are generous. Thats why all of their enemies like us wish to migrate to their countries.
Take one lesson from Lara... A young guy, with a previous best score of 64, has made 277, but is he happy? Is he satisfied? No, he was disappointed.. Not a single smile on the face.. Because he missed his triple.. This hunger helped him make his 400 & 375 later on... This hunger converts an achiever into a legend... This hunger converts a leg spinner into Steve Smith, a chubby kid into Virat Kohli, a poor guy into Barack Obama... BE HUNGRY... NEVER SETTLE... NO LIMITS... YOU AND THE SKY... GO, WORK, GET IT...
The skill and class of Lara is that, even after having such a back lift, he never struggled against swing bowlers throughout his career... what a legend, hard to find such talent in todays cricket.
Congratulations Mr Lara, you will always be my favorite bats man, your were superb evening until your retirement, I had never felt disappointed by your Character, you had been an inspiration to me throughout your cricketing career, I like your mannerisms , evening when you were giving out unfairly by an umpire you didn't retaliate, Yahshua Hamashiach blessings of good health and strength upon your life.
One thing I noticed from watching Brian Lara is his unusual top hand grip of the bat with the bat handle being obscured. Apart from Brian Lara, Graeme Pollock from South Africa was the other batter who I saw used the same grip. Both Lara and Tendulkar dominated the era from early 90s to mild-late 2000s and were the truly "Greats" of modern day cricket.
wow, you can see the affect of modern bats and outfield. Lara absolutely smashes some of those deliveries, middle of the bat, yet the ball kind of plods along to the fence. Players from that era should have a few runs added to their average or something when you compare to a modern player
The pitch and outfield was very very slow. That's what makes the innings remarkable, that he could play those shots on such a pitch. A comparable pitch to the MCG pitch just gone.
Cricket has become boring now. It's skewed too much in batsmens favor now with the bigger bats smaller grounds Fielding restrictions. I absolutely loved those matches when there was a fair contest between bat and ball in the 90s balls whizzing past the batsmens ears so close they could smell the leather. and then guys like Lara and Sachin and Steve Waugh ponting inzi Saeed Anwar Ganguly and kallis fighting it out against hostile fast bowling. That is gone now.
He was easily the best batsman of his generation and perhaps the best cricketer since the immortal Sir Garfiled Sobers!!! In full flow, Lara was a sight to behold !!
@@firstal3799 Lara struggled against Australia? You should tell Ponting, Warne, McGrath, Gillespie, Gilchrist, Steve Waugh, Hayden, Langer, McGill and Healy. Oh and Damien Fleming too. All of them rated Lara the best batsman of their era. No need to believe me, read their autobiographies.
What an incredible innings this was from the great left hander... Simply superb in all respects of the batting. The world record was certainly on the cards and playing that kind of gutsy innings in Australian ground with that pace was magnificent effort. He announced to the world he can play those big innings and as rightly said by the 'voice of MCG' none other than Bill Lawry it was tragic end to this epic innings, Hooper shuld have sacrificed his wicket.. Never the less it is always fun watching the highlights any time.
My countryman.. What is great about the Brian Lara story is that he blossomed from this point into everything that we in Trinidad and Tobago hoped he would and much more.. What a talent, what an entertainer..... I'm so happy franchise cricket wasn't around back in those days to possibly rob history from this epic journey.. Thank you BC Lara for all the wonderful memories.......
My cousin brother told me that he watched this innings live and the baddest ball which Lara played was that one hand on drive after his 50. Was unfortunate to be a lone warrior in the team those days, undoubtedly the greatest and most stylish player that have ever played the game beside Sir Don Bradman.
Why is youtube showing videos of Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Kallis and Co. in my feed. Re-watching these greats play is such a treat to my eyes. Reliving my younger days when cricket was so competitive. Cricket of today's era will never stand up to that charm of old.
Unnoticeable the most difficult batsman to dislodge and the safest you could depend on to bring the bacon home..one of many great entertainingly classy innings....Thank you Mr Lara.
What a batsman he is, really best best left handed batsman in the world. What a selection, what a timing, what a calm and quiet man. Brian Lara is dedicated his service to West indies and universe. He played many marvelous and fantastic innings in his career. Personally I respect and love him. ❤️
It was no surprise he had scored 400.. it was like something he was always chasing when he batted.i mean he make 200 runs look like 50 with the rate he scores at and his timing and placement is another story by itself
The most mind boggling thing is that in his first class debut in West Indies he scored 98 runs against Barbosa against the likes of Michael holding and joel garner just amazing stuff 🥵🥵🥵
+Shalya Madra O yeah? how many double centuries has Tendulkar scored? I am not saying Lara is better, but neither is Tendulkar, they had different styles, different teams, so comparing stats wont particularly help you in determining who is better. Statistically sangakkara is way better than Tendulkar, except that he played a lot lesser tests, so sanga is better than Tendulkar then?
+Saikat Kar after the retirements of lara and sachin, sanga has been the best. Im not even Sr Lankan Im indian, but still think sanga is the best of his era.
+Saikat Kar I think statistics are important to loom at. Otherwise you could say Afridi is as good as Tendulkar simply because he has a different style. But it is true that both Sachin and Lara are legends, Sanga and Ponting too.
I watched the full highlights. I didn't find any fault shot in an innings. It's look like all from the text book of CRICKET. An underestimated cricketer DUE to media.
My all time favourite , love to see batting of Lara, vivaan, martin Crowe, Kevin, sachin, laxman, sehwag, dravid, kohli in test matches. They play so well every shot is classical.
I feel very lucky that i lived in the era when Sachin and Lara played... as also did Warne and Murali... and yeah, Mc Grath and Anderson... legends and legends galore... what an innings, what a absolute feast fr the eyes... MAKING OF "THE" LARA...
I remember this like it was yesterday. My grandparents raved about this innings. My grandfather thought Lara would be the best batsman since Bradman. He hadn't seen much of Tendulkar at the time.
I can watch Lara bat all day long. 23 years old and looks as solid as a rock, and with all his characteristic flair! My absolute favourite batsman of all those I've seen. And one of the few who could play Warne!
I have started watching cricket since 2013 and i am amazed by those reactions of crowd , that awww on that midfield and such a beautiful clapping on every shot , cricket seems to better back then!!! Especially test cricket
Brian Charles Lara Double century in 6th test amazing 375 broken the record of lefty 400 international test cricket 500 domestic form Better than all of that
Absolute treat to watch him and real run machine in test matches, non striker bats man rarely have to face deliveries once he starts plays his music, majority of balls faced by Lara only till he got out. That's his special.
Helmet with No grill facing fast bowlers.Says something about the man.Respect.Loved watching him since I saw him for the first time in 1993 Sharjah I think.
And only run out gets him out, he wasn't finished yet. Those back foot punches were raised away to the fence considering those big boundaries. What a tragic end of a remarkable innings. The one and only Brain Charles Lara!
