Hi Paul Your RU-vid tutorials have been my holy grail-I've been religiously following them. I'm hoping to nail that handstand for a solid minute before my 50th birthday rolls around on June 1st. Thank you for your guidance.

Thank you so much! First, I did the heel pull drill, then the toe pull drill. Then I tried a freestanding handstand by first kicking up into the vertical planche position with my head in front of my hands. Then straighten. I was able to hold it for 10 seconds. Success at last! That's the best freestanding handstand I've ever achieved. I think I've finally got it after watching your video. I'm saying this as someone who has been doing handstand pushups for about 10 years and never managed to do a freestanding handstand despite practicing several times a week, watching countless videos about it, and having lessons from yoga teachers. 🙏

Thank you! I always felt I have more control if I bend my arms when I kick up but I thought it's wrong. I also heard I should push myself away from the ground as much as I can, to bring my shoulders closer to ears, but I always loose balance faster this way. Now I will only focus on finding my balance and not care how it should look like 😄

Your entry techniques are gold! No one really talks about the lean or bend techiques. I'm doing the lean but can't go straight afterwards. Hips are heavy in under balance. More wall work I guess. My yoga teacher teaches me to do the soft bend entry. But most influencers teach the perfect entry immediately and it's frustrating. Then they tell us to have a straight body because it's efficient. But actually learning to balance in weird shapes is actually a more important skill to learn.

This is gold. Looks much easier than practicing though. I especially liked the balancing drills at the wall - mosty the chest to wall ones. If one knows how to fall practicing finger press for balance can be done also with chest to wall, I think.

I was losing hope I would ever be able to get a free handstand but am now looking forward to trying heel and toe pulls. Something else that I noticed you do that I should learn, is pivoting on hands when overshooting a jump in order to not fall. Seems simple but I can't presently do it and and scared to jump into any type of handstand without a wall because Ill almost definitely crash onto back.

I always did with starting straight arms, hands on the floor and kick up with a straight leg, and I kick up always into a stacked position but lasts about a second and either fall in over balance or under balance. Been doing that for a year. I can’t figure out which part is weak or I just can’t connect to my body or lack control so…Now back to the wall and starting these drills, I think the shoulder pulls chest to wall will help strengthen my shoulders and gain control over my body.
@PaulTwyman
@PaulTwyman 4 месяца назад
Hard to say 100% without assessing but yes normally learning to use shoulders to control underbalance will transform your control and hold time. Check this video for more details ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-i1sNKkc9TEY.htmlsi=9qG05w6wXxSzyJJq

Golden as usual Paul.I'm itching to get cracking and nail a freestanding before the European summer comes back around! My issue is though when/how often can i perform the entry drills and toe/pull heel pull drills? I already do a heavy bent arm(muscle up/pull ups) day, 2 days rest from the rings then straight arm/straddle front lever session on the rings, then after 2 days rest have a lighter bent arm day. Add a leg/active recovery day in the mix i feel my volume is about right at present BUT now to add in handstand training i'm at a bit of a loss.

@@PaulTwyman For heel pulls is it more of a leg thrust or a pressing in with the fingertips to get the heels off the wall? I struggled with this today in training. Still afraid of toe pulls, irrationally because I know how to bail, so didnt try those

It’s a little bit more push and pull with p bars but go with slow subtle movements don’t be too aggressive. More time on the wall doing the basic balance will give you time to adjust

Great content! I saw another RU-vid video saying to have your shoulders lined up with your wrists; when doing toe drags off the wall, do you slightly planche with shoulders above the hands and then go straight or do you line up your shoulders with your wrists and push from there?
@PaulTwyman
@PaulTwyman Год назад
Yeah I prefer to teach pulling the shoulders over until the toes become light and not using the hips. If you are further away from the wall you will move the shoulders more and less if you are closer. I like this method as it gives me more control in under balance so I can always catch the handstand and control from a lower base

@PaulTwyman
@PaulTwyman Год назад
Hard to say without assessing. This could be a mental thing, the body not wanting to come away from the wall so it falls back towards it. It could be lack of strength or conditioning in the shoulders or body line or lack of mobility

@@PaulTwyman Thanks so much Paul! I watched it, and it gave me some subtleties to think about and practice! Glad I found your channel! I don't have any problem holding a handstand against the wall for over a minute, doing wall-walks, and doing handstand pushups against a wall. (I do CrossFit everyday). Do you think that strength (wrist, forearm, hand, or...?) is my reason that I can't consistently kick into a freestanding handstand hold and/or regularly push off the wall and hold a handstand for more than five seconds or so? Btw, I'm 5'7", 127 lb, 61f. Thanks so much!!

I have tried the toe pull and consciously tried to push my hands against the floor so that my feet come off the wall naturally without me having to do anything but it hasn't happened. I have ended up doing is taking my feet of the wall with split feet and alternate with each leg in hope to find balance in Chest to Wall HS but my feet don't come off the wall due to my fingers pressing on the ground. I just slowly take them of the wall if you know what I mean. I know that overbalance and underbalance is corrected with your hands and fingers but I just can't develop that kind of proprioception. I have the strength but not the awareness. I keep my core tight, point my toes, tense my core, hands shoulder width apart and push as hard as I can against the floor but with no avail.
@PaulTwyman
@PaulTwyman 2 года назад
Very hard to say 100% without seeing it but it sounds like you’re losing connection between the hands and feet on the Heel pulls. Then the same but disconnect between shoulders and feet on the toe pulls. Film both from the side and try closer to wall using slow subtle pulls
