Have you heard the rumor that FromSoftware, makers of Elden Ring, are hard at work resurrecting ... ARMORED CORE? Wait, back up. Have you heard of Armored Core? Because it's a great, weird, classic, tough FromSoft series that spanned 17 entries! So, let Clayton Ashley catch you up on what the series is all about before Armored Core 6 maybe-possibly comes out. Someday.

@@chadrickmorgan1149 I always assumed it was a pool/billiards reference. In the game of Billiards I am most familiar with, the 8-ball is the last ball that has to be sunk. You can't sink it earlier or you loose but you can't beat the game unless you sink that ball. However he being 9-ball is the secret actual end of the story (game). He's the boss behind the whole scenario but he's unknown, because everyone is told it's over when you sink the 8 ball. I found this to be further likely due to the fact that once you beat him you are called the "nine breaker" and "breaking" is what you do to start a new game of pool and you Broke the System it created. Lastly (I almost forgot) the Pilot being named Hustler One supports this as well. In pool when one is hustled, they are beaten by another player who poses as though to be of a similar level of skill, but in reality is vastly superior and thus not whom they seem to be...... like being supposedly just the number one ranked Pilot whereas in reality they were..... Edit: just found out there is indeed a game of pool called 9-ball, but it is not as popular as 8 ball Even still in that case you have to sink the 9 ball last to win, so the majority of my explanation still stands. Now that i think about it..... to fight hom you have to go down a hole, lol

My favorite thing in the PS1/PS2 armored core games was how much your personal skill went into the handling of an AC. If you hit the ground hard, you would stop for a moment, no matter how nimble your build was. Stopping a boost suddenly would cause a response delay. Left-hand weapons had a slight delay in activation that you had to account for. Even with a good FCS you needed to be leading the target, but not just in the sights, with your own motion. Once you got good, you could make even heavyweight ACs dance.

I remember at the tail end of the Armored Core series that the speed had gone up to that extreme level. There'd be whole fights between players and even enemy units where your opponent would be on the screen for a second or two and you'd have to fire/adjust on the fly or you'd be the one getting smashed. It got insane and I both hated and loved it.

But be sure to look at the english patched Japanese release and not the official localization. It's got a very similar mission structure and customization approach, but it focused a lot more on the characters and plot, there's some exciting twists along the way and it even gives the player ways to change its outcome. Look at my profile picture and that should tell you my opinion on AC. One of the cool points about the game is that there is a relationship between pilot and unit - It doesn't matter how powerful your unit is if you don't have the skills to control it, and conversely, it does your skill no good if your unit is actively holding you back. It's that reason why late-game units tend to be ultra-fine-tuned to the player's liking and style of play. Like he said, blades are high-risk, high-rewars, so if you see someone running dual blades, they're either gonna go down in flames or else you better hope you can keep them at range before they find you.

I hope this is the next game they are working on, because I feel like there aren't enough mech games that scratch this itch. I'd love some sort of open-world mech game. Just replace all "fantasy elements" of Elden Ring with "sci-fi futurism" and I'll be there on day one. (Not opposed to fantasy elements at all. Fantasy just heavily outweighs mech games in the modern day)

Every AC release is someone's favorite in the franchise. But, some of them are so drastically different from each other that it would be frustratingly difficult to appeal to the entire fanbase. Some people will want the more tactical pace of AC2 or ACV, others the more frenetic play of AC1 or AC4. Some people view AC as a solo experience, others as a VS platform only. To appeal to some fans, you risk alienating others. The only way to really get everyone hooked is going to be through a solid, engaging Story. After that, take the best elements of what came before and improve them. Online VS & Multiplayer, with a diverse range of Stages instead of multiple versions of the same thing. Perhaps even a Stage Editor. Keep the UNAC system (the best part of ACVD), but update it with wider options and use it to create custom Arenas or Cohorts. But if they truly want it to be a success, they need to make it cross platform.

Weapons that change movement speed due to weight, overheating limiting stamina recovery, 6D dodging, ammo budgeting, attacking specific mech parts (which now you can do in ER), electronic warfare, weeapons are discovered by downloading schematics in missions or from rewards, but also you could put pieces together from salvaging enemies... so many possibilities!

When I was younger, my ambition was to hold an Armored Core tournament with a $20,000 cash prize (problem with that is that I didn't have $20,000, because I was around thirteen and not employed, and also poor) just so I could find someone who could beat me at it. It's the only game I could be considered exceptionally good at. No one I knew locally would play me anymore after a while. It was to the point where I literally paid another guy to let me teach him how to counter me and play against me. I think he beat me once or twice, but I actually can't remember now. I was waay too obsessed with AC back then. I feel silly thinking about taking it that seriously. But I still love the game, and miss it even now. Now, later, with ACV and online play being a thing, I definitely found plenty of people who could beat me. But I remember people trying to recruit me after they played me. But I refused, because I loved my little three man team (mostly it was just two of us playing at any given time). We would raid territory all day and night (which with my area's crappy connection, took all day and night just to get raid going). I remember raiding the Frito Banditos, and that kind of stuff fondly. I doubt anyone remembers my good old One Eyed Jack, that was using dual gatling guns to basically snipe after the nerf which made them trash (I took the nerf as a challenge to use them, and use them I did in very unorthodox ways), I would always be bait to engage them first, then dodge and use precision-timed jumps to avoid damage, and soak up what I couldn't dodge while my buddy in his glass cannon build picked them off once they started focusing on me. Basically, me dying 90% of the way through the round was part of the plan. As long as I ran them out of ammo, softened them up, and maybe took one with me. He'd swoop in for the kill, nice and fresh at the end, using me as a shield, if necessary, provided they split and someone good was targeting him. I still remember the rush of trying to anticipate my opponent's shots and dodge preemptively. Just doing my booster hop dance like a mad bastard while continually firing my automatic weapons, trying to make every single shot hit. We did pretty good for a small team that could barely connect to the game. But there were times we got stomped hard going two against four too. I really miss that stuff. There isn't a comparable mecha game that I could ever get into in the same way. Those were the days.

The most complex/skill based pvp game nobody knows about, because yes, at their core(hehe) modern armored cores are mostly about the pvp/multiplayer, the campaign is comparable to what cod's campaigns are compared to their MP. Now that dark souls and elden ring made hard games popular, it might be easier to sell... AC could easily be an esport, i played it for a few months and was amazed at what the tryhard comunity could do. They should just work on the learning curve, dark souls is manageable, AC is something else entirely. Or maybe a complete rework of the formula, and more attention to the campaign/single player aspect of it, a dark souls-esque progression system and lore? who knows, but it's one type of game i always found really interesting, but unpolished in places, if miyazaki got his hands on this, and worked his magic, it could be a winner.

Search up on RU-vid "ac4a multiplayer match jpn vs eng" There's insane amounts of customisation, the game is not an RPG so every build is viable if you are good enough Souls and armored core share some gameplay DNA, energy management is basically stamina, dodging is vital and the story / world settings are also similar (post apocalyptic bleak world) You play as a mercenary called a Raven or lynx, (3rd gen and 4th gen use different names) ace pilots who control armored cores, greedy corporations and individuals with money then hire you to do their dirty work At the end of every mission, the amount of ammo you used and the damge you take go straight to your paychecks, ammunition costs and repair costs are deducted from mission awards Theres a lot of build variety, snipers, long range rifles, machine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers, flamethrowers and energy weapons(no ammunition but drain your energy bar for attacks) and even laser blades!(moonlight also exists here;) Patches originated from armored core

I made AC mechs in Brick Rigs and the way I streamlined the booster controls was by making diagonal boosters that give you a combination of directions by pressing holding 2 buttons at the same time. Front right booster you turn, front right+back right you strafe left, back left+back right you boost forward, etc. So 5 buttons, 4 as horizontal control and 1 for vertical. Anyways, I try to recreate AC mechs in any game I can and have played every game minus 2 or so but I really hope they are making a new one. Finally

Part of why I think a new Armored Core would be really sweet is that element of speed. Fromsoft's current stable of Soulsborne games are all pretty slow - you tramp around at a pretty sluggish pace, even when you're sprinting, and much of the combat is about finding the cracks in your enemy's much quicker offense. A game that's just as technical but moves at lightning speed with full aerial movement would produce something just as exhilarating to watch as it is to play, and that's a damn good way to get people interested.
