Today we upgrade the factory low pinion Dana 30 axle to a high pinion Dana 30 axle out of an early 90s Jeep Comanche/Cherokee (MJ/XJ). The new axle came equipped with 4.88 gears, an ARB air locker, Synergy ball joints, and a Teraflex Aluminum High Steer kit.

why not just add lifted springs? you wouldnt have had to shorten your drag link, and in the end you could have kept that sweet teraflex setup with no additional labor.

For now I’m trying to keep the jeep as low as possible. I like to wheel in rocks and off camber situations so the lower I can keep the jeep the better

Great build. I'm about to start on my 03 Rubicon. Radiator, clutch, tummy tuck, cable 4wd lever, up grade steering linkage, rear transfer case seal, exhaust with new cats and more. I'm planning on going to TJ Fest in Moab in the spring.

Seems like a lot of work when you could just modify your saginaw box for redneck ram. I would have tried to salvage this new set up instead of getting carried away with bump steer.
@dironaa
@dironaa Год назад
I kept the old components and will likely go the route you suggested next time I bump up tire size, but for now I’m happy running the factory style steering setup with the 33s. Thanks for the input!

@@larryalexander4833 It can be tough to find a good deal on these things. If you're not in a hurry my advice would be to wait for one to show up a little closer. I hate driving far to buy things because I usually feel obligated to buy even if its in worse shape than expected, otherwise I end up feeling like I wasted a trip.

Are you going to space the rear axle over an 1'' to help with the offset of the pinion and add a 1'' wheel spacer to one side so it will be back to stock width? I purposely installed a CAD axle to let the Spartan locker get some rest and gained very noticeable amount of less rolling resistance. How do you like the 4.88s? My plan was to go with 5.13 gears and 35''s but with 5.13s and 32s right now, it is not as low as I was hoping for. Not sure what size tire to run now?
@dironaa
@dironaa 3 года назад
That hadn't crossed my mind but I'll consider it. The 8.8 is sitting under the jeep with the factory trac bar bolted to an Artec truss with the mounts in the factory locations, so I assume (although I haven't measured) that the axle is centered under the jeep right now. Good to know, this is the first CAD axle I've dealt with. Was it difficult to adapt the CAD to a jeep which I assume didn't come with it from the factory? Still need to have a rear driveshaft built before this thing can get back on the road so I can't comment on the 4.88s yet, but I honestly wasn't unhappy with 4.10s on 33s so I may not be the best one to ask LOL
@benmudn
@benmudn 3 года назад
@@dironaa I bought the Ballistic Fab brackets to install an 8.8 in mine but found a D44 that I could not pass up. We put an 8.8 in my brother's TJ and I did not like how the narrower axle looked and after days of researching I found where some were spacing them over, which helped with driveshaft vibrations that some say that can not eliminate due to the dual angles. I just bought a 4x4 Posi-Lok kit that manually engages the CAD

Are you still running 33s with no lift and the fenders cut fender flares cut? I have a 2004TJ unlimited that I would like to run 33‘s on but everybody keeps telling me I can’t do it even if I cut the fender flares said there’s not enough room if I were to be going over a rock can you confirm or deny
@dironaa
@dironaa 3 года назад
I’ll start be saying all 33s are not necessarily 33”. The size printed on the sidewall off my General Grabbers says 33x12.5 but if you get out a tape measure they only have a diameter of 31.5”. Some brands may have an actual diameter closer to 33”, some may not. To answer your question yes I’m still on stock suspension with a 1.25” body lift (made my own but I’d recommend buying the Savvy Off Road body lift) and trimmed flares. I’ve come very close to rubbing a tire on the trimmed flare but haven’t actually rubbed yet. I say trim your flares and give it a try. If it looks like you won’t have enough clearance while you’re off road then install a small body lift and add a high clearance belly skid while you’re at it.

@dironaa

Yes, they're tapered. I think you'd run into clearance issues with anything that sticks up higher than a flat arm too

I know it’s over your target but $10 grand is more realistic for most people. It looks like you’ll hit $7k after the suspension. My “budget” build went over $20k. It’s an expensive hobby
