I reassemble the front wheel hub on the D44 axle in my 1987 Jeep J-20, including installing a new rotor and new bearing-race. The procedure is basically the same for all Full-size Jeeps from 1974-1991, as well as squarebody Chevy K-10 and K-20s.
There are three seals required for each side (here with the Jeep factory part #s):
1. Inner wheel-bearing seal: J535 9703/National #471271
2. Stub-shaft flange seal: J812 7350/ National #722109
3. Spindle-bearing seal: J812 1397/National #722108
Watch to the end for a special Jeep "Style Tip" to add extra bling to your front wheel hub!

Thank you! I got my Axel in pieces when I bought my truck. I've watched a few too many videos and none of them were as descriptive and educational as yours. It's been kind of intimidating for my first time in a bunch of pieces. Now I can tear it back apart and fix it right. LOL. Thank you again!

Glad you found it useful! The proper orientation and procedure for that end of the axle is perplexing if everything is just in pieces, since they can go together a number of ways, but simple once you know what goes where and in which order. Do it a couple times, and you're a pro!

Thanks for the video. Was stuck pressing new studs into the rotor and hub. I used the old rotor, like you have with my press and they all just poped in. It's the little tricks that help.

Great video 👍. Your spindle is missing a metal seal tho that fills in the space at the base of the flange that the V seal smushes in to (unless my spindle is different from yours)

Dr Bob, if your looking for another truck just like what you have for parts or another project, go onto cowboy car crushing. He has 1 in the junk yard they are trying to find someone who might want instead of scrapping. Just an FYI. Looks pretty solid. It from Texas.

Thank you, Matt, but that's halfway across the country from me, so somebody else will have to rescue it. If it were closer, I would have taken it.

For that you just need to change the caliper mount bracket and the hub/rotor; everything else should be the same.

Hi and thanks for a great video. A quick question. It seems to be on the low side of tightening the outer spindle nut to only 50 ft pounds or what. I have seen several others tightening the nut with between 150 - 190 ft pounds.
@bbsbcv
@bbsbcv Год назад
That might be for an axle-nut for unitized bearing; on this bearing setup, you just want the proper preload. By tightening to 50 ft-pounds while rotating the hub, you take out all the slack, and by backing off from there you can get the proper end play. If you left it even at 50 fr-lbs, that would be far too much preload and you would burn up the bearing in short order.
@treeoflifebyjwp
@treeoflifebyjwp Год назад
Are we both talking about the outer spindle nut. The first nut you tighten to 50 ft lbs and backing off but the outer is it not always tighten a lot more - above 160. I have a Ford Bronco with Dana 44 spindle.
@bbsbcv
@bbsbcv Год назад
@@treeoflifebyjwp , That step in the procedure from the shop manual only calls for 50 ft/lbs, but *at least* that amount, so I guess you could go more. Since the washer between the nuts locks the pin on the inner nut from turning, there's not a lot of force at play trying to undo the outer nut, so I could see 50 ft/lbs being sufficient.

Can you add the part numbers for the wheel bearings inner and outer? I heard they are different from the J10
@bbsbcv
@bbsbcv 2 года назад
The bearings are the same for the front D44 axle, whether it is used on a J-10 or a J-20; the spindle and bearings are the same, though the J-20 hub has the 8-lug wheel pattern and disk is 12" vs. the 6-lug wheel and 11" disc on the J-10.

Sooo..that beveled spindle washer..? Is that metal? Is it called a axle spindle thrust washer?
@35ppt
@35ppt 2 месяца назад
Depends on which Dana 44 you have. Mine’s a 66-71 ford open knuckle and that washer (thrust) is bronze. When you buy the spindle internal bearing kit for yer Dana model it comes with the suitable thrust washer (I’ve seen rubber ones and steel ones)

@@bbsbcv thank you so much man! I’ve been wanting repack my bearings on my 91 w150, I was just needing this new seal as I’ve usually saw that they fall apart after removing the spindle. Much appreciation!

@@sickmansgas483 , I see that O'Reilly's lists both the 722109 and the smaller 722108 inner seals as fitting the '91 W150; you might do better to buy the SBK-1 kit that also has the needle-bearing for the stub-shaft to ride on, and which is not much more than one of the seals on its own: www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/national/national-spindle-bearing-and-seal/bca0/sbk1/v/a/2119/automotive-truck-1991-dodge-w150-pickup-4wd?q=1991+Dodge+W150+axle+spindle+seal&pos=6
