Front Floor Fitment - Steering Box Raise - 1967 VW Bus - Gregory - 20

After I raised the VW Bus steering box last season I knew I that the VW Steering Box Raise would affect the VW Bus steering box floor clearance. After investigating fitment, cutting a VW Bus floor hole, and fabricating a proper VW Bus steering box hump to fit over... I welded the thing together just before dark, in the only way that the #MFDM knows how!
Previous:
Howto Raise VW Bus Steering Box. I plan to lower my VW Bus some and on a stock VW Bus the steering box is unusually low. So to in order to increase ground clearance I cut the VW Bus frame to raise the VW Bus steering box up about two inches, thus increasing ground clearance by that same amount. Later I will also shorten the steering shaft about 2 inches, but I will be more concerned with that after the front end is rebuilt and the floors are installed. Thanks for watching!

I’d be cool to add both a universal joint and a custom mount to the steering column to make the whole thing adjustable. Also, you could add the seat mechanism from a bay window to make the drivers seat more adjustable and able to spin 180 degrees around. The split bus is definitely a tight cabin but with both of those two mods it’d be a little more comfortable for drivers that aren’t as narrow as spaghetti noodle.

It's more of a head and legroom problem. The width is fine, even for somebody with shoulders that get stuck in doorways like me LOL! 😁

Glenn I'm at this stage on my 67 bus once i make sure my foot is fully heal up. This will be a great help, man I was on the edge of my seat when you talked about more room steering box raise. I'm 6' 5" a big drink of water. There are very few cars i fit in which is why i drive my Subrau Forestor. Like the slots for the steering shaft opening relief cut by the A-piller. I was think about cutting my new floor panel in two pieces to install, but will try your method.

I am oddly proportioned for my height. I have the legs of somebody a foot shorter than I, but they have the girth of somebody my size. All of my height is in my torso. Head room becomes an issue quickly in a lot of vehicles! Good luck to you, and hopefully you video document! I'll be watching! 😁

Awesome, So nice to see the floor going in. Allot of folks doing restores on busses feel your pain on what it takes to get this far. I know your super busy but have you checked out Mikefn garage. That guy has a way with sheet metal that's for sure. He's pretty lucky working on stuff from the west coast but either way old stuff.
