Join me in pole position at the front of the lower saloon for a short ride aboard Ensignbus Vintage Fleet - ex Southend Transport - 1981 Leyland Fleetline FE33ALR (one of the last built) / Northern Counties 233 (MRJ 233W) on a private enthusiast charter.
The bus is now to semi-automatic rather than fully-automatic transmission (as built) and has also been converted to single-door instead of dual-door (as built).
Note: to avoid transmission damage, drivers of buses such as this should ideally pause briefly between gears, when changing gear, and not go 'straight through'.

I remember these in the 80s and 90s and have been on this bus many times. I know this is the wrong way to change gears but I used to like it sitting at the back listening to the engine, I remember most drivers did this on all the semi autos they had in their fleet including the Bristol VR, leyland Nationals, some of the older Leyland Olympians and their X1 coach fleet.

In late 70s we had r s and a few t plate fleetline then around 80 81 went to atlanteans. 😊 west Yorkshire pte.

It's driving me nuts. I am probably having false memories as I was a kid in the early 80s. But I have a memory of a bus like this model where there was a waste height partition in the middle of the isle to allow people to get on and off the bus via the same door. I can't find any footage of images of this setup. Did this ever exist? I'm also looking for footage of the old caps from the 80s where they'd press a button for the change and it would slide down a slide. Again, being young I'm not sure if any of these memories are real or just false ones.
