Yes, it is true. Our Land Rover Discovery needs more repair work than some other vehicles but typically the jobs are easy and done in 1/2 a day. This does not make it a bad vehicle - it makes it a affordable vehicle. See how Vera and I go about such a repair. There are worse things in live. Our videos have no educational "how too" charactore unless you want to know how to work on a car with your wife without approaching a divorce. We hope you like the video. ,
We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or to yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk. The videos we provide are primarily for entertainment and not to be used as instructions. Any products and spare parts we use in our videos are chosen by us and not provided by any sponsors. We do not recommend the parts we use in our videos as we mostly use Aftermarket low-cost brands due to cost.

Love the channel, but could you turn the music volume down, couldn't hear the dodgey wheel bearing. Cheers

Sorry for that. I know the audio was not so good in the beginning of the vid. Sound is a tough topic to get right. Plus, what Land Rover owner would not prefer wheel bearing noise over some boring music, right?

Hi Guys, love your videos, you two are such fun to watch. We have travelled all the way up through Africa in our Discovery 3 that is seriously set up for over landing and is very heavy because of it. We also towed a 1,500kg trailer behind us. In terms of wheel bearings on our car, the very best are Timkin bearing. We have over 50,000km on ours and they are still going strong. If I have to replace our in the future, I will use Timkin bearings again. And, oh yes, we have been through deserts, rivers and completed the notorious Van Zyls Pass in Namibia. Keep up the good work guys. It's such fun watching you adventures. Ivan

The church bells chiming out at noon, and letting both of you know what time it was, takes me back to my many trips to Germany. My mother lived in Wirsberg (kries Kulmbach) and she lived through the war as a preteen/teenager. I just recently lost her and have been hurting really bad. I came across your channel to fix one of our two Land Rover LR3s, and heard your accents and mannerisms when speaking English. Even though she lived in Canada for nearly 75 years, she never lost her accent. In addition to learning lots of valuable stuff from your channel, sometimes I will listen to just to hear you both speaking, because it reminds me of when she and her German friends would get together and speak in English. It also reminds me of the many trips I’ve made to Germany over the years. You two don’t know how many people you touch, or even in what way. I came looking for some car tips, and was left with happy tears rolling down my face. From here in Canada, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Great to watch you guys, i watch for the interaction between you two as much as for the content, i own a 2001 Defender 90 Td5, as i'm now 50yrs old i was thinking about replacing it with a D3 for more comfort which is how i found your channel, i was searching for videos of how hard/easy it is to repair a D3, i'm very hands on and can fix my Defender no problem but i have seen loads of horror stories about having to take the body off to do the simplest of engine repairs and didn't fancy that, but by watching your channel i have seen that most of the repairs can be done as long as your willing to take your time and use a little ingenuity. Thanks for your content and keep up the good work guys.

You can just drive the Rhine road - you can see at least three castles all the tme - when one goes out of view, another one comes into view. I love driving that road every time I drive back to England, I join the east bank road near Wiesbaden and drive as far as I can before we have to leave to get the ferry in Calais - we normally get as far as Koblenz. But I do like castles further up, like Drakenfels (I went there on a school trip in the 1960s).

As ever, very cool video. I've done the same on mine. I used a Timken bearing, which I think may have been original equipment..not sure. I don't think they should last forever though. Disco's are heavy beasts, so give suspension bushes and bearings a hard time, just with normal driving. Agree, they are easy to work on, BUT I had to upgrade my jack and stands, plus torque wrench. Everything is heavier and a lot of the bolts are tighter than on normal cars. I'd be interested in the transmission work on the challenger! (I have an American V8 powered vehicle as well). Very interested in the brake lines, as my Disco is a similar vintage and will more than likely need those at some point. In the UK, we have the equivalent of the TUV every year! the latest job on mine was the steering wheel angle sensor which gives some very strange problems. Surprisingly easy to take the steering column out, fix and replace. German castles, yes, very different from UK castles.
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 3 года назад
Hello Vernon, we also had to buy bigger stands, jack, sockets, etc. Everything is bigger than on a normal car. Still it is much easier to work on as on the Challenger. On the Challenger every second bold is a issue. Hard to reach, rosted or poor material. Even if the car is from Texas and has no rost. There are worlds between the manufacturing quality of these two cars. The LR quality really exceeds everything i worked on so far, including Mercedes and Audi. The MTBF has not much to do with the manufacturing quality but more with design of the vehicle. I do know about the steering wheel sensor. I can get loose and develop play and then the ESP kicks in premature. Thanks for watching the video to the end!

@@garystuart226 before i bought the 4.4 v8 i watched a lot of videos and reviews. It turned out that I should not go for the diesel but for the petrol V8. The engine is much more reliable than the diesel engine and has much more power. But also consumes much more of course. Mine runs on LPG, and I can refuel fairly cheaply in Belgium (0.35 cents / liter). I even live in the south of the Netherlands. Anyway, I only had it for 2 months and so far very satisfied. @@garystuart226 It's no problem Gary. My mileage would work out to 13-15 mpg. Ours is just straight gas, as we overland and LPG is nearly impossible to find in Northern Canada, not to mention the problem of storing extra fuel, and the weight of the tanks. Our LPG prices here are around .90cents/litre. Our petrol is 1.10. Even if we stayed near town, it wouldn't make sense to convert. The timing components do wear, but both of our 4.4Ls(LR3 and Range Rover HSE) are close to 240,000 km all original except for the cooling system parts I mentioned above. The problem ones where the 2005 and older Range Rovers with the BMW 4.4. All LR3s and the Range Rover from 2006 and newer had the Jaguar engine. The BMW is not bad, but they had vanos and guide issues. They also had some sump issues, and the water cooled alternator was occasionally an issue. Yes the 5L supercharged engine in the later years did have some timing chain guide issues, as well as the early LR4 Ranger Rover sports with the 5L.

What an expense rather than disassembling the hub from the bearing then taking the bearing out of the hub a lot more work but far more RU-vid content for your channel lol. Hello Colonel, maybe the shaft came out so easy because the road wheel nut was not tight enough. An other viewer wrote the the spec is not 230 Nm, its 350 Nm.

Just started watching the video, but I suggest getting the Timken wheel bearings. They are the OEM parts; they cost twice as much as SKF, but they will last at least 100k km.

Hello Alex, I know I should not save on spare parts... We will buy the Timken next instead of the expensive SKF.
@AlexStrugariu

@@Vera_and_Christian I do understand your rational for going for a cheap one, and it will surely be interesting to see how much it lasts. When we bought our car, it had 109k km on the clock. One wheel front bearing was changed by the first owner, just before we bought it. We changed the other one right after purchase, as it was shot. Went for a Timken one (about 180 euros). Now at 200k km with no issues, despite quite heavy off-pavement use.

Can you advise how to out the vehicle into access mode and disable air suspension prior to doing this work? Thanks and great video!
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 3 года назад
See our video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-f8SB7aa8jAM.html The manual specifies to bring the vehicle in off-road mode prior lifting. The reason is, that otherwise the auto leveling would cause a lot of moment during the lift process. For working on the vehicle I want the suspension down in case of a line rupture or in case I need to take the shocks out. Without disabling the air suspension, the car would inflate/deflate the shocks while lifting. It is not a mandatory step but I don’t trust the electronics. I was under the car before and it started to lower because of a small leak.

Hi. Please replace your oil pump housing to the stronger version if you haven’t yet, I was about to change the cam belts in a few weeks as the timing belt was due. My engine has now destroyed it self. Not happy. The engine now needs to be replaced. Lots of money. The original oil pump housing is weak and breaks the cam tensioner pulley into itself. I’m replacing the motor as this is the best car I’ve owned. Roy.

Good morning Christian and Vera Enjoyed your video as always and learned a lot I have a couple of comment and questions please Are you running 18” wheels? What Hankook winter tyres are they? And you appear to be running the standard size disc?-will the TUV allow you to run updated v8 discs pads and callipers which I have done on mine with EBC green stuff pads? If you do this upgrade the forums say to use Red stuff pads which I will next time. I look forward to a reply please! Regards Phil

Great Video and love the detail! You have a new subscriber. I also have a wheel bearing noise on my LR3 but it sounds like it's coming from the rear. One thing you mentioned in the beginning is to to disable the air suspension before jacking up the LR3. You mentioned to disconnect the 3rd fuse from the bottom? What was the exact fuse you pulled and is that the only thing need before jacking up the LR3? Thanks so much Mike
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 2 года назад
😃👍On our D3 it's the third from the bottom. If a wheel bearing is gone in the front, you'll feel it while driving. See if it worsens under which conditions. In the back, could also be that the EPB needs reajusting. We have a new video next Sunday where we replace the ABS module and service the EPB. And while doing so, we talk a little bit about the problems and how we solved them when jacking up our Discovery 3. You might also need to consider, depending on what job you have to do, is whether you put it in offroad or access height before pulling the fuse. 🙋‍♀️Vera

Oh my tomorrow (Monday) I am scheduled with an appointment to take ours (LR3) in to our friendly local mechanic to change the wheel bearings on both sides of the front. Id been noticing a lot of road noise and lately has become woo woo woo woo. I thought the road noise was the rugged looking tires my wife picked a year and a half ago and then recently i thought the tires need rotating..finally my somewhat worn brain remembered we had been through this before. Some three years ago we changed the Wheel bearing on one side..I used a good non OEM.. Now the mechanic said its a wheel bearing. Ive decided to do both so that I can get some quiet in the car again. I'm not sure which has failed but will find out tomorrow..the non OEM with 30k Miles (unlikely) or the original on the other side for 190,000 miles. He got me the OEM Timken for a good price but unlike the original Timken are I think no longer made in USA. Also with that many miles its been suggested we use Royal Purple Synthetic Engine Oil which costs so much more than the Synthetic Pensoil but we want this thing to last. What a beautiful job you did on the undercoat paint job..goodness gracious.Wonderful videos.Thank you.

To check for wheel bearing noise; on a straight road, put gearbox into neutral about 40mph, ease steering gently right or left, whichever side gets noisier as you turn that way, thats the side with the problem!
