You being a retired commercial HVAC mechanic, it probably brought back memories of leaving a jobsite that, while running, you weren't 100% sure that you had found the real problem and might be back. I know the feeling.

Yeah...I HATED when an intermittent problem couldn't be found and had to leave unsure. But I always made the people aware of the situation before getting a signature. They seemed to appreciate the honesty and most of the time on a return, we would just add to the original invoice as though I never left the job. In other words, without and additional service charge. It happens to virtually every tech, but you gotta keep it at a minimum. I was pretty lucky in that department. Oh, I CAN tell some stories about commercial HVAC issues. LOL

@@tractorman4461 In the 90's companies folded every couple years. I worked for 5 not counting State Farm, owning a book store, and selling radio advertising. Every factory had to have the office HVAC gone through. Most had little or no history of service or connection with a service company and they were in different towns. I just kept having the same service company I started with in 1980 do the service work every time. They also did the electrical work that we couldn't. Nice to have someone you can trust. Don't think they gained any customers though. Every place closed soon after I left. It was a rough decade.

Sometimes it gets a little tough. I couldn't even get in to the wires without removing the starter motor !! Luckily this one worked out pretty good, even though I don't have a definitive cause for the shutdown...yet. It could be an intermittent fault of one of the door switches OR still a chewed wire intermittently grounding the ignition...time will tell though. Thanks for watching today and as well for the kind words.

Well Zane, it IS running but I'm not totally sure what it was that cleared the grounding. So for the present I am considering it an intermittent issue. It WILL show back up for sure.

Good troubleshooting Wendell! I have been fighting mice at my place in the country for 30plus years, Couple years ago came upon spearmint or peppermint oil soaked cotton balls. Just push a cotton ball in the bottle with a thin jaw longnose plier to get it soaked and put a few in the battery box or wherever. Originally used it for wasp's but keeps mice away too!
@tractorman4461

That's another good idea, thanks for the suggestion. I hate mice !! I have to keep mouse traps set continually in our garage and keep dog and bird feed inside metal trash cans with lids.

That’s a good blow by blow of the diagnostic and the way to do it to find a no start problem. Micro switches are a problem area for sure.....CHEERS
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 10 месяцев назад
I don't know if I'm happier to know its probably a switch or not. It could still be one of the chewed wires grounding out that's just not been located yet too. They really made points and condensor ignitions obsolete with the Magnetron.

The Everyday Projects channel guy just did a video of keeping mice out of his off grid house with Pine Sol. He liberally swabbed Pine Sol on the floor and around the threshold, he stated that this has been very effective as the mice do not like the smell of the Pine Sol. Maybe put a cup or two on there and bag the motor to slow evaporation of the liquid. Possibly just swab a good amount around the motor and spill some on the ground as well. Worth a try.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 10 месяцев назад
Now that's a good idea. I've never heard that before. Thanks for the added input and I'm sure that's what I'll do. I have had lots of mice issues over the years...the worst being eating all the wires off the ECM all the way up to the box itself. That was the old 85 Ford. Luckily they are very reasonable to replace.

After all of this, we're back to the reliable old mouse trap(s). No, I don't mean to imply that repairing this annoying fault(s) is easy, it is not, but those darn mice still don't know what a mouse trap tastes like, so that's your best defense, I hope. Thumbs up here Brother!
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 10 месяцев назад
Hahahaha....well, I've had TWO suggestions so far. One is to wipe it down with Pine Sol or leave a small open container to evaporate and the second one is to use Downey dryer sheets in the battery box and under the wiring area. All good ideas including the mouse traps. So I'm sure the issue will pop back up pretty quick if its one of the proximity switches. So when it does, we will find it for sure....maybe anyway. As long as it works when I want it to, I am happy. Have a great week Reg and thank you for watching another one.

Downy Dryer Sheets will keep mice away. The Missus shouldn't miss one from the laundry. I recommend adding a new one every couple weeks. Put one int the belt guards and another one in the battery box. Works good for me

In the 70's MIOSHA mandated, I hate that word just because it means no argument 👺, guarding on everything had to have the machine not work with any guarding missing. We were running presses and swing saws so lots of guarding. By it's very nature a safety switch is kind of a hair trigger that breaks the control circuit so the companies that installed them of course put in the least expensive ones and they failed quickly. We replaced them with the good Allen Bradley limit switches every time we worked on them. Still the conveyors at Borg Warner ran all through the building. Safety switches and e stop circuits made handy hanging places for pliers, brooms, welding cables, and lunch bags. Mice didn't bother the insulation on the THHN but they sure did like to build nests.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 10 месяцев назад
Yes, I do believe that these proximity switches are quite cheaply produced. As they fail, they will be replaced by NOS I have on the shelf. The plastic coating on the THHN is a deterrent for sure. This is regular rubber coated automotive wire that mice seem to enjoy nibbling. So I'm sure the intermittent issue will rear its ugly head again and then hopefully it can be resolved. I am not going to change whichever part it is until it fails to reset connection by the wiggling and jiggling of troubleshooting. I strongly suspect its the 'passenger' side switch.
