CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Nixon (Frank Langella) gives a passionate, defensive, and revealing interview with Frost (Michael Sheen) who pushes the "cover up" issue.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Hollywood heavyweight Ron Howard adapts playwright Peter Morgan's West End hit for the silver screen with this feature focusing on the 1977 television interviews between journalist David Frost (Michael Sheen) and former president Richard Nixon (Frank Langella). At the time Nixon sat down with Frost to discuss the sordid details that ultimately derailed his presidency, it had been three years since the former commander in chief had been forced out of office. The Watergate scandal was still fresh in everyone's minds, and Nixon had remained notoriously tight-lipped until he agreed to sit down with Frost. Nixon was certain that he could hold his own opposite the up-and-coming British broadcaster, and even Frost's own people weren't quite sure their boss was ready for such a high-profile interview. When the interview ultimately got under way and each man eschewed the typical posturing in favor of the simple truth, fans and critics on both sides were stunned by what they witnessed. Instead of Nixon stonewalling the interviewer as expected, or Frost lobbing softballs as the truth-seekers feared, what emerged was an unguardedly honest exchange between a man who had lost everything and another with everything to gain. In this film, viewers are treated to not only a recreation of that landmark interview, but a behind-the-scenes look at the power struggles that led up to it as well. Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, and Brian Grazer team to produce a film adapted for the screen by original play author Morgan (The Queen and The Last King of Scotland).

I think it was just a simple way to dramatize the scene. "Wait, wait, just so I understand correctly, are you really saying that in certain situations, the President can decide whether it's in the best interest of the nation, and then then do something illegal like instate a nation-wide ban on incoming immigrants based solely on their religious status-" "I'm saying that I'm going to rename the White House as Trump's Swingin' Crash Pad, all right, they're the best words, I have the best words."

Non-brainwashed Liberal translation: "Wait, wait, just so I understand correctly, are you really saying that in certain situations, the President can decide whether it's in the best interest of the nation, and then then do something like instate a *****temporary immigration ban on people coming from historically hostile anti-US countries until we sort out a better way to screen who is generally coming here to find a better life and those who have malicious intent to plot future attacks or plant sleeper cells? And to be clear this has absolutely no relation to their religion affiliation but instead the countries they originate from? And you did this to try and prevent attacks like the ones in Paris from happening on US soil?"

There’s an argument for executive privilege in foreign affairs, but it strains credulity in domestic issues..

At least Nixon knew Yes what he had done was considered wrong but at least he put his hand up and said he did those things and gave his reasons and I think I can respect him for it, plus his resignation from office shows he had a sense of civility and a respect for the office, to make it plain I’m not saying I agree with what he did but I’m just noting that it’s a mark of a leader when you do something wrong you confess and face the consequences.

This is very accurate, but there's definitely more Brezhnev in there than Reagan. Probably like 75% Brezhnev and 25% Reagan

I always thought Nixon meant to say that the president would never do anything illegal. Ergo, if the president does something it's presumably above board. And then he realizes how badly he butchered that argument.

Where the law is gray and undefined and national security is at stake, the Chief Executive can act, legally. And, incidentally, the law used to burglarize Ellsberg's shrink's office was a law used by FDR to conduct warrantless searches. All that said, if neither the FBI Director nor the CIA Director will cooperate with your break-in plan, it might not be a good political idea to go through with it.
