i like the detail of making Hans voice go higher when he says 'thats what i was going to say'. As when you lie your voice often goes higher. nice touch!
I absolutely adore this choreography. It completely portrays Anna's youth and her desire for human connection. Having a guy to love was a foreign topic for her her entire life, why would anyone expect her to NOT take a chance and get a little touchy? She's young and she's naive and she's awkward. I think this whole song is perfect.
I think the reason why Anna looks so touchy (but I don't think so) is because the audience will be adults most of them I mean look this is broadway and tickets cost a lot maybe the directors thought her actions needs to have some connections with the audience something unpredictable and a change.
Yeah, and I actually see a bit of Santino in Hans. This guy doesn't look like Hans at all. Anna too, she looks and acts like a middle-aged inappropriate aunt.
Angelika Joy huh? the first comment was about the voice actor for hans (santino fontana) and then nobody’s business commented about jonathon groff (kristoff)
This isn't quirky and awkward in a cute way like in the movie, this is weirdly sexual and Anna kind of comes off as an inappropriate aunt rather than an unsure young woman
The musical adaptation targets the adult audience as mentioned by the creators of the show so they changed it up a bit. Read: It was not made for kids.
@@alexismendozatv I haven't seen the show but I assume Anna is still supposed to be someone who has longed for human contact and love her whole life. Love is an Open Door was used to convey how she finally felt like she got that, so it was a romantic yet cute and quirky song. But this really just makes it feel like Anna's character motivation isn't love, but she just wants to bang Hans. And it's so overly goofy there's no time for romance or sincerity even between the sexual parts. I feel like adults deserve quality, too.
Ashley N Same here. Particularly with no deleted songs cut from the movie putting Let It Go at the end of Act One after In Summer and mostly using projectors for Elsa’s ice powers.
@@yippedoodah I don't know. Mermaid had a bad script to begin with, but the costumes, set, memorable songs and choreography are why it's performed at all today. The choices made fit the script and kept the spirit of the original characters intact. This song in particular in Frozen seems to have taken no direction from the original movie and paints Anna to be more mature than she truly is. The actors are working well with what they've got, but the choices made in this one are directorial flops if anything.
I honestly really like this version of the song. Patti Murin and John Riddle sound so much more better here in the live performance than in the musical soundtrack and their jokes and quirky dance moves make Hans's betrayal a little more heartbreaking when you remember that Anna finally found someone she could relate to after being isolated for so many years. Also, Anna shoving Hans into her boobs was a lot funnier than it should have been
idk this feels so forced like anna is lovable bc she's a little awkward, and i get that it's broadway, but i feel like they're trying too hard here.......
it's trying to be like... lol, so funny and relatable, sexually frustrated young woman. but for what was billed as a character-driven story, it's just trying to hard to be funny and missing out on anna's actual feelings of loneliness and naivety.
isn't he just using her. and after they was to marry her he was going to kill her. he was just trying to trick her in to marring him. so there isn't suppose to be chemistry between them.
I honestly love this version, I mean at this point we all know what happens in this story. It's not like we're gonna still be taking this romance seriously, so may as well have fun with it. Plus making their relationship more awkward, forced, immature, and humourous plays into the themes of the intricacies of real life love that the Broadway musical introduced
@@thestonemasyn6932 Yeah, which I totally understand, I'm just not a big fan of sexual humor, it makes me a little uncomfortable, but that's just my opinion. It doesn't ruin the performance for me of anything like that. In fact, I love this show, especially Hans in this show. I feel like they gave him more depth than he had in the movie, which I love! And again, I love Patti!
This was the song that disappointed me the most I looooved the show But this song was very flat I expected a big dance And background changes And they made it awkward which make sense but the choreography didn’t seem to match well.
Animation Geek glad to know a trained broadway professional has such an opinion on a simple performance! Thanks for the feedback that was really needed!
Josh Thone thank you for such an unneeded and obnoxious comment. Let people have opinions. And you’re technically contradicting yourself by saying her comments wasn’t needed when yours in fact was less necessary
I respectfully disagree. Honestly this is my favorite number from the entire show, and it works so very well with the geeky/ awkwardness that they both have.
Josh Thone what a stupid comment. She said she thought the number was too boring for her, you don't have to be Rita Moreno to think a stage number isn't as big as you want it to be.
Idk if it’s the fact that it’s a GMA performance and they’re tired and jumping everywhere but the harmonies in the last bars just collapsed and got so weird and it sealed the deal for me
Actually, I think the awkwardness is a strength - just remember Hans is supposed to be faking all of this. In the movie, most people bought it. Here, it's painful to watch. But I'm 100% with you on the sexual thing. Anna's increased childishness gives a sort of pedophilic vibe to it.
Seeing it for the second time has changed my mind. I love both the actors now. What a crazy musical number I will probably do both parts to in my room.
Ali Zimmerman it’s funny, but she’s almost unbearably pitchy when he’s carrying her... which is also understandable, of course, since she’s upside down and being flipped... but I feel like it could’ve been a little smoother
I'll say this: I LOVE THIS. I love Putti Murin, and she portrays Anna in such a youthful way. Her vocal range and quality for 8 shows a week is ASTOUNDING. She truly embodied Anna, and it breaks my heart that she left the show. But I'm so excited for what she does next!
idk why so many people dislike this ! i think the actress for anna really made it come to life and they both have amazing voices ! of course things could’ve been portrayed different but obviously this is what they were going for. so anything she’s doing .. was rehearsed in practice one million times and that’s what they wanted her to do. GOOD JOB GUYS !
Idk, I've seen For the First Time in Forever too and it always comes down to Anna being TOO MUCH. It's like they stripped her of all the interior drama she actually had in the movie.
@@sarahmichellekay But the original point was deception. The audience is supposed to be tricked into thinking that he's her "true love" and then have the rug pulled out right from under them. What if someone comes to see the show who has never seen the movie? How are they going to interpret this?
Remember that everything on stage needs to be bigger, so what might seem perfectly fine in the theatre can suddenly feel too much being filmed for TV with close-ups.
a lot of people are pointing out and lamenting the awkward, stiff, and over-sexual choreography and chemistry (or lack thereof), but they fail to understand that that’s exactly the point of this scene, and that that is what makes it so great. patti murin, the actress who plays anna, is stellar in her performance. her almost immature... fondling of hans here is precisely so as a result of her isolation and exclusion throughout her entire childhood (you can also see this very clearly in her ‘for the first time in forever’ performance) and this also plays in to the overarching theme of ‘true love’ in the entire story, as part of anna’s character development (in which anna realises that her supposed love for hans was superficial, and that her love for her sister, nurtured by warmth and compassion, is what’s right) (listen: the song ‘true love’ in the album). hans, on the other hand, doesn’t respond to the ‘advances’ of anna-initially. you can very clearly see his confusion and hesitance. but as the song continues, he grows warmer and more attuned to anna, because he’s starting to realise that he can manipulate and exploit her (look at the hand grab and the twirling). the original movie was criticised for the inexplicable revelation of hans’ true nature at the end, but the broadway showcases this ‘slip’ here, which provides a hint that can foreshadow the plot twist and thus, temper it, in a way. one critique i do have, however, is how dead the overall set is. the song is fun, lively, and exuberant, but nothing moves in the background to couple that. perhaps they couldn’t execute fancy manoeuvres on the GMA set, or perhaps it’s to further emphasise the stiffness of the scene, but it does take a toll on my enjoyment
Honestly I think it’s great how comedic they made it. To me that makes it less cringy than the original but it’s still keeping the romantic tone. (Though is is coming from someone who really values humour in a relationship)
An amazing song in the movie and the musical delivers this... I’m so disappointed. I didn’t feel any chemistry at all between them and I was really expecting some changes on the background... and it has a sexual appeal that isn’t there in the movie. I’m very disappointed.
Flávio Jr. Okay first. That's the whole point of the scene Anna isnt used to all this so I stuff so she thinks hans is her true love when rlly she just has a crush on him. I can agree with the background thing tho. Also it's not like little 5 yr olds are gonna be going to NYC to see a Broadway show it's more for a adulta
Julia Petteys Broadway isnt only in NYC and if you have any brains at all you would know that it isnt mainly for adults. A huge part of the broadway loving community are teenagers trying to get onto broadway or do musical theater. Also they are talking about this in relation to the story of Frozen. They obviously weren’t trying to make Anna this sexually desperate but thats what it comes off as.
THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S NOT REAL. they're portraying how superficial it is. it's not the musical -- it's the broadway stage adaptation -- have you even looked at the cast album? there's only 9 new songs, and few numbers from the movie were cut.
If you really study Hans during this number, you can almost see exactly what he's thinking. In the beginning it seems like he's still kind of unsure of his plan, what I mean by that is how he'll go about it. But you see he's just casually playing along with Anna to get to know her better, in hopes of finding someway of getting to Elsa. The gears start turning at the towards the end of the first chorus, seeing that she's gullible he's probably thinking something along the lines of "Hmm maybe she could be useful" then he is caught off guard when she makes an advance towards him right at the end of the chorus. Sure, he's a charmer no doubt, but knowing his history I don't think he's had much experience with women at all, let alone have one all over him. This sensation is not only new to Anna but also to Hans. Out of shock, his first general reaction is to walk away from her to collect himself and try to comprehend what just happened. After a moments reflection he sees that she's not only gullible but also starving for affection, and most definitely attracted to him. Once he's come to terms with this, he realizes that he may be able to manipulate her, this could be his "open door" to the throne. But before foolishly jumping in, he needs to test the water. He needs to know just how hung up on him she is as well as how hungry for love she is. In order to find out, he comes back at her in the start of the second verse, approaching her in a nonchalant manner. Throughout this verse he is learning her, figuring her out. It's almost too easy, partially because he does see a part of himself in her. He knows the feeling of loneliness and uselessness just as much as she does. He knows the "pain of the past" and she's his ticket to say goodbye to it. He sees the victim that he's always been inside of her and needs to feel like he's in control for once. We see that long for control when he grabs her wrist. After that he follows her every move, almost chasing her down, he is so close to grasping his goal, he can't lose it now. But is he really chasing his goal or is his own hungry for attention gravitating towards Anna's affection. She is practically swooning over him and it feels good to someone who's felt like a screw up all his life. He catches his breath in an attempt to pull himself together. He begins to test her again by leading her to the side, a sign of control. But she once again catches him off guard and puts his arm around her, pulling herself closer to him. He glaces at her almost in disbelief. He has never experienced anything like this before and it shows as he awkwardly follows as she leads back in the opposite direction. In this moment he finds himself a bit side tracked, he's actually starting to enjoy himself and letting his guard down. Even someone with an agenda like his can't entirely deny Anna's warmth. He has never been treated with so much affection before in his life as well as met anyone so relatable and that draws him in. Just for a bit it seems like he gets caught up in having fun with her. He begins to drop the casual play-along mood and slowly starts to reveal his own quirks and goofier side that he would otherwise be judged for, but he feels a sense of safety with Anna. He unleashes for and more of his playful side on Anna and absorbs her contagious joy, but soon after reality catches up with him and it all comes back. Between the mixture of frantically trying to claim his goal and genuine happiness, his mind races. The next thing he knows, he's asking her to marry him. He holds his breath in nervousness awaiting her answer. When she responds with a yes, he knows he's hit the jackpot! He throws her over his shoulder in relief knowing that the beginning of his path to the throne is paved but also wonders at the back of his mind what he got himself into. As the number comes to and end his mind is moving a mile a minute, but he has a sense of security now. He can't believe he hasn't managed to mess this up yet and feels accomplished, like he could pat himself on the back, and Anna isn't so bad herself. He's felt so loved or successful at the same time in his whole life. The door to his future his wide open.
@@gracesmith649 Yeah, I know not everyone will, just putting my thoughts out there XD When I was done with it, I was like "Whoops... I just wrote a novel..." But hey, I can't help it, when a forensic science student sees non-verbals.... We can't help but analyze lol
I don't realy like it...the actors are great! Don't get me wrong...the coreo just seems like they tried to hard...especialy this new part were they just “dance“. It was just like“what the heck are they doing now?“, it didn't seem to mean anything, it was just dorky. “Love is an open door“ is about annas dream of romantic coming true and this wasn't romantic at all. Yes anna is a huge dork, but you could have done it differently. I am realy sad, because frozen is a movie dear to my heart and I was excited about the musical...but I don't know if I even want to see it...?
the dance break is something done in musical theater. it wasn't done in the movie because it's done more often on live stage. it's just supposed to be entertaining. musicals really dont make any sense, but thats one of the reasons people like them. they're just for fun
Idc what people are saying but I love this version and the broadway version has far more adult jokes and even in the choreo, this isn’t a serious song and I love how they portrayed it
Patti Murin is great . I saw the show and was expecting a rehash of the movie. But the cast made it their own. Everyone should see this. I can't wait to go back
This was painful to watch. They took all the sweet "romance" out of the scene and instead made it uncomfortably sexual. Anna in the movie is awkward, but not in the way that this version is. This was just felt incredibly wrong and I'm disappointed.
But this WAS made to be unromantic. Nothing about this was supposed to be sweet. It was supposed to showcase superficial love and was made to cater to an adult audience. Broadway tickets like the one this was made for, is restricted to 18+ for a reason. Watching this WAS supposed to be painful to watch, because this wasn't true love. In the short choreography they had, it showed Hans being uncomfortable when Anna placed his arm around her shoulder. But quickly changed his attitude because he realized he could use this to manipulate her. So I think they portrayed this most exceptionally. So it's actually the movie that is weird, because Hans was such a sweetheart. So him being a Villain at the end just came out of nowhere.
@@Anonymous-in4ed It's a Disney show - not Avenue Q. It was not "made to cater to an adult audience", nor are the tickets 18+. The website literally says "Disney on Broadway performances are recommended for a general audience. As an advisory to adults who might bring young people, Disney recommends its productions for ages 6 and up." (To avoid crying in the theater, generally).
@@Anonymous-in4ed Also, personally, I preferred a plot twist with hints instead of it being bluntly spelled out. That's just a personal preference though.
I don’t see why everyone is complaining. I fucking loved it!!! Plus they did say they wanted an older audience to enjoy it. People nowadays just love seeing the negative in everything. They worked really hard on this, they took the time to make this different from the original version. No one is original nowadays so I like how they jazzed it up a bit. And I gotta Anna and Hans killed it in the dancing portion!!!
This version was absoulutly perfect the acting was wounderful and you can see they had a blast performing the song together. The coreography was super cute and fits Anna's character absoulutly perfectly i mean she's been locked inside the castle all alone for too long never having the chanse to meet any loved once not even her sister so why on earth would she refuse now that she finally found someone she thought to be her love. I absoulutly love this version❤❤
okay for everyone comparing it to shrek - shrek is a comedy and it’s not meant to be glamorous. this couple is supposed to seem glamorously in love- hell, the whole show is supposed to be ‘glamorous’ which, as i mentioned, is not shrek’s intention at all. the difference between this and shrek is that shrek accomplished what they wanted, and disney created a really sexual/pitchy/not right number that just doesn’t hit the mark. i don’t care for frozen but, man, did they fail at putting this number onstage.
this annoys me that the lady who played anna here looks older than kristen bell, is the same age as her but the broadway company wouldn’t let Kristen play anna in the show because she was “too old.” this is the same story with Idina Menzel. smh 😒🙄🤦♀️
Hey, the truth hurts. She has a nasal tone and when she belts, can't stay on pitch. When you're on Broadway, there's a certain level of performance expected, and when you don't meet that level, criticism is natural.
@@emakostic8635 Most people including me don't like it because it sounds pitchy, there is no chemistry the Anna looks too old for the part and it looks more sexually than quirky love song it's supposed to be but it's my opinion.
Patti Murin looks so much like my older sister who once had red hair and was a theater kid for a while so I am CREEPED OUT every time I watch one of these lol.
Idk why people critize this so much, for me this Anna is way too much funnier, brave and crazy than the movie xD plus remember this is a Braodway performance! It must be exageratted and a bit spicey in order to catch the attention of everybody, including those who are sitting in the back, it is not the same when you watch your tv lol
I was really excited for the bway adaptation bc Frozen is my fav Disney film, I’m still not super into the casting of both Anna and Elsa but they’ve grown on me. Everyone else in the cast was perfect and this number is by far one of my favorites, I love how cheesy and awkward it is, and the dance break is so fun.
She is a 37 year old experienced woman trying to play the role of an 18 year old that has been locked In a castle her whole life and has not experienced anything like this before in her whole life
the current anna before covid shutdown is the perfect. the acting, the vocals, her facial expressions. they shouldn’t have casted patti when she acts like a drunk aunt who inappropriately makes jokes and touchy lol
No but literally my favorite part of GMA was when they did performances from musical, are used to watch it all the time as a kid and that was my only motivation to do so
