Thank you everyone for your encouraging comments and tips on fry bread! Yes I know some were too thin. My hand pressing skill needs work but it didn't stop my family from eating well. My husband preferred the thinner ones and my son preferred the thick bread like ones. In the end, we love fry bread. 😁🙌 Thanks again everyone! 🙏💕
I'm a Navajo and I think you've done a great job!.. I also think that no matter which way a Navajo Frybread is made, it will always be delicious and especially if it's made with love!..
@Jay Vernn John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Mark 1:15 - “The time is fulfilled,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”
Navajo here and I approve. Everybody makes their bread different but you get the point of the Taco here. We normally use beans instead of potatoes but really, anything works. Navajos like their potatoes too, great job! Btw, love watching your videos, keep em coming.
@@sarahmarszalek7469 blood sausage is sooo good. Haven't had one in a long time. My mother-in-law and grandma used to make the best blood sausage haha. I guess everybody's grandma does. But they put potatoes, intestines and fat with a hot tortilla 🤤 YUM!
I'm Native American full blooded White Mountain Apache the Navajo are close to us. One things for sure we dont measure nothing! 😂 Blue Bird Flour is the best, plus Glabber Girl Baking Powder, and Salt- if you want 😁 We normally pour the flour in a bowl maybe about half, we use our hands to measure both the baking powder and salt, then pour the water and form our dough with our hands. Make into balls. Let it sit. Heat our pan with oil or lard more than a few tablespoons more like about an inch of your pan. Once it's nice and warm you want to grab your dough and start flapping it till it stretches out into a circle. Place into oil and wait till its nice and golden and flip. Drain excess oil or lard also! Finally top with beans, ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onions, and elpato 😄, if you dont have that salsa will do. Some people also like theirs with sour cream and olives. Ps. My grandma hated when we'd use a rolling pin. And if we had a hole in our dough before laying in the pan she would say our boyfriend was cheating on us 😂 As I got older I figured that was her way of trying to have us avoid not even making holes in our bread! Great video!!!!
My G. Grandma was Cheyenne and we make them the same way. I almost never measure anything unless I'm baking. That's the way I learned from my G. Grandma and my Aunt's.
Well, she did say this is her rendition which is close enough. Sounds as good as yours & other's who have shared. Fry bread is my reason for going to the state fair! 😁
I'm Navajo, but my fry bread sucks! You did a great job! I just have one tip for you... When you are putting the dough into the hot oil just make sure you lay it down closer to you first, that way if the oil splashes up it will splash away from you. Hope that makes sense!
Didn't know I needed this recipe, but as soon as I saw it my first thought was how I only ever eat these tacos at our state fair and this year there might not be one, second thought was Simply Mama has it covered already!
Hi. I'm from New Mexico and I love fried bread. I've eaten fried bread at Pueblo Feast Days and at the Torreon Chapter House - it is so good. I'm blessed to live in New Mexico with beautiful people who make delicious food. May God bless us all. Thanks for sharing.
I am a Full Blood Navajo from New Mexico 😃 You did great with this recipe on frybread 😊 I have seen the comment above, yes we typically use Beans, but we also love our potatoes (nimasí) too. Thank you for expanding your channel into a recipe from my People ❤️ I love your channel!
Every Frybread I've seen isnt perfect, but they are Perfect for us ❤ some like it Extra Crispy or very Fluffy, it's the texture that melts in your mouth lol Come to the reservation mama we would love to show you how we make it and how its served with all our Mutton ❤ An educational tour.... Mad Luv from your AZ fan ❤
Cardiac Cali, thanks fir your comment. I made these yesterday from a recipe by other Navajo RU-vidrs. Mine came out thin and crispy and i absolutely love them, but my friend said that I didn't maje them right because they're supposed to be thcker & softer. Your comment answered by question...thank you.
Bluebird flour is the BEST I love it but hard to find where i am so I sadly just use regular flour! I’m Yaqui but learned fry bread elsewhere. Fry bread varies from tribe to tribe, no fry bread is the one and only it varies on person to person and taste :) you did great just keep adjusting to what you like! I love mine fluffy and I’ll make sweet fry bread for dessert too 😍 (I love you videos I just made the strawberry horchata and my husband LOVES it!)
Always lay something in hot oil away from you, never towards you as it can splatter on us and severely burn us. Looks delicious! Thanks for another awesome video recipe tutorial. Stay well.
Simply Mama, it looks delicious! I like them thin and crispy. 👍 I thought a couple of the viewers comments were off-putting. Everyone has their own version and preference. Appreciate you sharing your recipe and your kind responses. You stay classy, SM!
You did a great job! Don't listen to the natives trying to speak for other natives. You did well. It looks good. Probably taste awesome. I'm sure your family loves it. That's legit all that matters.
Frybread can be each individuals interpretation just like tortillas, tamales anything can vary depending on what a person likes. As a Lakota, we make our frybread differently, using yeast which makes a thicker n fluffier bread that we use to soak up soups, stews…& can last upto three to four days not getting tough or hard, heat in microwave a few seconds. It’s a wonder in itself.
this looks amazing. also not sure why so many natives are here judging the way you cooked this. I am native and think this was awesome to see on your channel! 😁
We are Native and grew up making these. You can make a dessert with them too. When they come out of the oil just add brown sugar and cinnamon or powdered sugar. My kids love them. I call the Native donuts.
Shimasani (grandma) used to put Manteca lard and dry milk mix in the dough to make it extra fluffy and moist in side and it was delicious! She would mix it so long til her arms fell off and now that I know that pain I'm super grateful she taught me so I can pass it on to my babies! All my city friends ask me what my recipes is but I honestly dont know cuz I never measure it ❤
I find it interesting how each interpretation is as diverse as the person preparing a meal. It’s funny , I’m a native who has been making frybread most of my life & certain dishes can very from background to background . Even just making frybread can very from tribe to tribe. I worked at a restaurant that used a Diné, Navajo recipe (I am not Diné) but from my tribe a different method is used. Funny, my mother in law is Mexican American & she was helping me make frybread & she would roll very thin like she was making tortillas. I would joke with her too thin & we’ll be eating tostadas…object is to make fluffy pliable frybread. I give you the respect, credit for trying something new, & to each her own. 😊
Oh my goodness. Love this recipe. And FYI if you don’t have any type of fat you can use mayonnaise. It works in a pinch and will do when making flour tortillas also. Thank you. ❤️🙏
I love your recipes and everyone makes their frybread different, I love bluebird flour and baking powder gives you the the rise and alot of people don't use lard or oil in their dough. ❤ Tohono O'odham Nation

I think I need to find the blue bird flour or just order it and give it a try. Thank you btw! 😊
I made these last night for my family and we’re obsessed!!! I was afraid because you made it look so easy, but it was! This immediately went into my keeper recipes. Thanks so much!
When my daughter was young and we were on a very tight budget, Navajo Tacos were always on the menu. I canned my own pinto beans and tomatoes, along with my baking supplies, we would have them several nights a week. Thank goodness I had a Navajo sister in law to teach us about making fry bread, It’s very similar to sopapillas, delicious also drizzled with honey or cinnamon sugar.
Usually my fam don't make them so thin, but tastes just as good!(: My family likes them thick to where only 1 fills them up (: These are the best!(:

Yes I noticed the thicker ones were softer and bread like. I think my poor hand pressing skills gave me half thin and half thick...lol! I have been on a low carb diet for a while so this video was hard to make. I love fry bread. 😁
@ I get that, I just assumed you preferred them thinner because some of my other family members also make them on the thinner side. (: I figure as long as the dough is flavored right and the color is accurate then it is delicious! (: You don't have a poor pressing hand! I can never make flour tortillas thin enough lol 🙈

@@yuli9411 Thank you! My son really likes the normal thicker ones and my husband liked them thinner. Thanks again for the nice comment.💕 Btw sometimes I still mess up on tortillas especially if I have not made them in a while. 😬
Simply Mama, your hand pressing skills are pretty legit to me. You do an awesome job period on your tortillas, fry bread, etc.... It doesn't matter what we say, your husband looks like a happy camper and I'm pretty sure your son is, too! BTW, love your channel, my fellow Houstonian!
I love this 💜💜💜 I am Native American and been following your cooking videos for some time now. I've learned a lot from your recipes Thank you. Fry bread recipes are different from tribe to tribe. Yours look yummy. That's how my Dad loved his fry bread. Awesome! Thanks again
I was absolutely elated to see that you posted this video. Definitely shows that your family is the epitome of what it means to being open to cultural foods from different ethnic groups. I am Diné (Navajo), and am a huge fan of your recipes. I love seeing your take on what your family likes. You definitely cook from the heart and it shows! P.s. The look on your husband's face says it all. *yummm
Hello SMC! We just made it. Finished about 5 minutes ago. Doesn't eat like much but the flavor is fantastic. I was very surprised. We used butter. This stuff is REALLY good. Going to have to get up early of a Sunday when the church is having an eating meeting after services and do up a dozen of these things. Made 11 today. I'm thinking all get the tasty sugar icing drizzle...Half with cinnamon and the other half with fruit of some kind. Way too tasty for tacos. Two things... I kept finding one ant in the last few when they got paper thin. (Looked like ants. Who knows?) That was a good thing. Just snatched the little scuppers right on out. Musta crawled into the open flour bag. Then, while we were heating the water our 17 year old much used microwave blew up. Got a new one ordered and then rolled out the dough! Only one caveat for your viewers. SMC makes it look easy. This is in reality a two person cook. One to roll and the other to fry 'em up. You know, unless you're super chef or have done this about 15 times. Takeaway: One of the best recipes for actually working I have run across. Never heard of the stuff before. Them Navajo guys ate good! UPVOTE!!
Love your recipes and I will be making this. Just ran out of tortillas! Sending you and your family Love! Thanks 😘 Also watching your husband eat makes my heart happy!
From a Native American Navajo. When making Frybread... do not add any oil to the dry mixture. We only add oil, shortening, or lard when we make Tortillas. Frybread - NO OIL. Everything else was on point.
Hi, from reading these comments... the natives weren't judging you. They were just telling you how they were taught. So with that said... you did good. I like the idea on ground Turkey and potatoes. I would like to try out new ingredients on the frybread tacos. And I like to watch you cook. And I have tried some of your recipe. They are delicious. Thank you for your video's. I enjoy and learn new recipes.👍😊
Ok so I'm addicted to your channel. You are such a great cook. You make it easy to follow with great instructions. Keep up the great work. Thanks for posting!!! 💛💜
As a Navajo, this recipe is almost accurate haha.. to my knowledge, my mom and grandmother never added oil/fat/shortening/lard directly to the dough. But this looks legit haha. Navajos like to use bluebird flour. Everyone swears it's the best, but I've not had frybread made with other flour so idk. But yes, thank you for uploading. I will have to follow your tortilla recipe too 😊 My mom and Grandma aren't around to help me, but I'm happy you are!❤
I've never heard of Fry Bread, so I decided since I had all the ingredients to make it. My family loved it so much and it's a keeper!! Thank you so much for sharing your delicious recipes!❤😋

Your recipes are always delicious😍 I am definitely going to try these!!! Do you have a link or can you please please please let me know where you bought your mixing bowl? 🤗 I have browsed the web and haven’t been able to find it😒
And there is no one way to make something. There are different ways to make stuff. This looks like others I've seen made before. I can't wait to try this!

This is true. I still have relatives that argue how to make food. I remember trying to ask my Aunt for her carne guisada recipe and she uses lard for the roux. My other Aunt used shortening and swears that's how my great grandmother did it. Turns out she originally used lard. She would visit us here in Texas and would use what my grandmother had available, which was Crisco. Needless to say it all tasted great and fed us. 😁
Welp, your navajo tacos look delicious and I'm sure they taste great too!!! I love your cookin you have thought me how to perfect my tortillas. When ppl ask me "how do..." I refer them to your channel. And this is spoken from a true Navajo "Dine woman".
I am San Carlos Apache. The frybread looks delicious. On our reservation we called it Indian taco. The Navajos called theirs navajo tacos. The natives all have thier own recipes for frybread. The Indian taco/Navajo tacos looks delicious 😋
Thank you very much for your comment. A few years ago, I took a University of Phoenix graduate class to get my Arizona teacher certification with a great lady from the San Carlos Apache Nation. Lost contact but her delightful personality is forever unforgettable. At that time, she told me that her father was the San Carlos Postmaster. Am just going to make a 1/3 recipe fry bread to make only 3 for kicked up breakfast tacos with rolled scrambled egg and some of the chili I made this past weekend that has black beans in it. 😎♥️♥️♥️🙏🏼💃🏼
In Belize, we call these Fry Jacks. 😊 It’s a breakfast staple in our country! We eat it with fried beans, eggs and cheese. Sometimes stewed chicken. Well done 👍🏾
As a Navajo myself, I have yet to make my 1st frybread. I just started making tortillas great. Frybread is next. I’m a male, so I never asked my mom how to make frybread lol. Looks good to me. (I’ll eat frybread made from anyone who wants to make it lol)
Good job as a Native we all make it different popovers (fry bread) as we call it blue bird flour is the best have never used any other kind my Mom, Grandma always used lard which makes the dough softer with out it it's hard I have learned alot from our elders. Your dough was good right down to the filling. I never measured eyeballed as I already know how much to put in, also more baking powder puffs it up more.
This looks so good! I always had to stop for some fry bread when I'd pass through New Mexico and Mesa Verde, if I wasn't so lazy about frying stuff myself I'd try to make some this week because I haven't had any in forever 🤤 😄
How do you reheat your leftover fry bread? Also how long can you keep fry bread dough refrigerated? I recently made your recipe and WOW!! This was my second attempt and your instructions were spot on!! I reheated my fry bread by wrapping individually in foil, heating 15 min in a 350°F oven? Are there other ways to reheat?
Your frybread came out nice & looks delicious 😉 I'm a Navajo & I approve your cooking 💯. I usually fry my bread in peanut oil. You should try that way sometimes. Thanks for sharing!
honestly i still think/dream about Navajo tacos. had it once back in middle school at an indigenous festival. when i have my own space, i am gonna make these from scratch!
Love fry bread. Had some amazing Navajo tacos when I went to a Pow-Wow up in Washington state, they were great! Now I'm going to have to TRY to find some flour to make these! Thanks for making and sharing your video!
I’ve never had fry bread or Indian tacos but husband has and he said these tasted just like how he had them as a teen on a reservation. Thank you for another easy and great recipe!
I love your videos and recipes so much my kids say I'm becoming a great chef lol😜😜 thanks to you!! BTW your husband is so sweet I was watching a videoof y'alls date night when y'all were walking he reached for you to hold his hand that's something you don't see much these days!! Your family is so beautiful!! Thank you for sharing your time and recipes!! Love ya
Love seeing the different variation! Looks yummy. New subscriber, Indigenous Canadian from British Columbia, I learned how to make fry bread when I was a teen, but I forgot how 😩. Cooking videos are my new favourite pass time lol. SO happy to see so many fry bread recipes here on YT. Gonna binge your videos! 😍❤️✨
I like your take on this recipe! I’m First Nations from Canada. I usually make a black bean chili for my Indian tacos. I also substitute lettuce and tomatoes with pico de Gallo. Everyone has their own preferences for this recipe! I’m going to give your recipe a try! Thank you 😊
