FSX Tutorial: Horizontal Situation Indicator

A quick demonstration of a Horizontal Situation Indicator (Bendix King 525A) so you can understand how to navigate using VOR in some more complex aircraft. Variations of this instrument are also used in larger planes with glass cockpits.

Once you are establish in the radial, the point of the yellow arrow where is suppose to point, that radial ? (In that case yours is pointing to the other side ) or pointing to your heading ? (In that case you are ok ) thanks

Yellow arrow points to the Radial. There is a separate orange heading bug which moves around the outside of the compass to set your Heading.

I am doing my IFR training now. I understand VOR/ Localizer navigation but I am struggling to visualize how the HSI works. Some of the practice questions for the exam will give you a HSI reading and ask you which airplane out of 20 or so represents your position in relation to the VOR. I just can't see it or understand. I've watched John King's explanation 4-5 times, but when I did the practice questions, I missed every one of them. I'm doing well with my study, but I can't understand the HSI.

If you're navigating by VOR, one of the first things you should know is where the signal is coming from. It may be worth looking at VOR navigation basics again ;)

How did you know to set your course to 055? What do we do if we don't know?

that’s when you’re doing your Localizer or ILS approach. that’s the inbound course. Every airport varies. It shows on the Approach Plates on Jeppesen or FAA.

You didn't explain very well in which direction we have to fly first. I still don't understand how you fly to that airport properly, that thing with the heading bug wasn't well explained, I know how it works, but why do you place it exactly there, based on what?

Hold the Spacebar and move the mouse. Hold space and scroll your mousewheel to zoom the view in and out
