Welcome to Alpha Hotel Flight Simulator Training Quick looks - a series of videos that takes a look a variety of training topics in flight simulator that can be covered with a shorter video.
This video covers the basics of using a Horizontal Situation Indicator or HSI - an instrument that presents heading and navigation information to a pilot, and is very commonly seen with advanced avionics.
This video assumes you are already familiar with the basics of VOR navigation. If you're not, check out this video on the topic: • MSFS 2020 - VOR naviga...

I've bought a Piper Warrior and wondered how to use the mechanical HSI. Your video has answered all the questions I might have had. Thank you for an excellent and precise explanation.

Have to thank you for all your content, I have learned a great deal watching your videos and appreciate how well structured and to the point you are. I usually watch a video and then try to emulate what you have done, since I can go back to the video if I have a problem, it's like having an instructor along to answer questions. IMO this channel is the gold standard for flight navigation, I have learned a great deal from your content and continue to do so.

I'm currently taking instrument ground school at my college. Had no idea msfs would be this useful for the stuff after hearing it's just a game. Guess it depends on how it's used!

Flight Simulator has been a decent platform for learning instrument procedures for a while - but MSFS has immensely improved it's accuracy and usability for that purpose, and Working Title's upgrades have brought their GPS systems to a very realistic level as well. You always want to get that real world aircraft time for any rating, but if you study and practice your instrument procedures on MSFS, you will definitely be ahead of the game!

How do you like msfs for ifr? I started with it and switched to xplane because it appears to me the avionics work better. Boy, all those plug ins, crappy scenery etc. I do like the flight model in xplane though and the pop out/up gps screens which are more readable. Trying to decide which one to stick with. Thanks

Pgreenx, I've found that MSFS works pretty well for most IFR procedures. ILS, LOC, VOR NDB and LDA approaches all seem to work as they should. SDFs and BC approaches seem to work fine, though I've not played with them very much. RNAV/GPS approaches don't work like they should, but they will still get you to the end of the runway. I think the working title g1000 mod you can get in the marketplace fixes most of those issues, but I've not had a chance to play around with that much. There's also a mod for the gns 530/430 that adds a lot of functionality, but it doesn't fix the scaling issue on approaches. You *can* do pop out panels on msfs using the right alt key (I think.) use that key and click on the screen you want to pop out. Another issue with msfs for ifr is the weather settings - it's very hard to set precise ceiling and visibility parameters, which is very disappointing. Xplane definitely does this better. That being said, I haven't spent a ton of time with xplane, so I'm not familiar with all of its features and functions. It seems like msfs is OK for basic ifr stuff, but if you are trying to get or stay proficient on something like rnav/GPS approaches on specific avionics, xplane is a little more "true to life." I actually plan to start an IFR video series for msfs after I finish out the private pilot series, so stay tunned!

@@AH-Flightsim-training thanks for the thorough explanation. I’m enjoying your videos. They are very thorough and detailed. I’m going to stick with xplane because the little that I know about the 530 It Works Way better than an MSFS but I like MSfs for fun flyovers of cities and other good landmarks.
