FT8 Colors and how they work

I used to think the 'colors' tab in setup wasn't worth messing with, but boy was I wrong... Many thanks to Mike (N7WLC) for showing me the errors in my thinking about this. What an amazing tool when you enable all the colors. Check it out!

Stu, thank you once again for this informative video. This was the only video I can find on RU-vid about the color codes in WSJTX for FT8. I think I already know the answer but in order for this to work I need to always let the log continue to build and never delete it or rename it such that it starts with a new log? I saw advice from another RU-vid ham about renaming the log file after each setting so you have a separate ADIF file I think that would defeat the color coding though. I think his rationale was for the purpose of parks on the air. Do you have any suggestions on how to parcel out the log to reflect a single activation?

If you move the log and start a new one, the colors go away... There really isn't an easy way to strip out just an individual group of QSOs. You could move the log files out of the way, do the contest or activation and then put your daily log back, but those new contacts will not be in the log for color assignment. Stu AG6AG

very nice video but I'm confused with the green color. At the beginning Green is for CQ, but at the end of the video, the contact that you just made is now in green as previous contact. Are their two different shades of green?

Hi Steven, The green color is for ANY CQ. The use of the colors when you select them all will show new contacts calling CQ in colors other then green, and calls that you have already talked to in green. I actually turn off the 'calling CQ' green color and that way I only select new contacts. Hope that helps! Stu AG6AG

good explanation, however this does not work for me. I have version 2.1.0 downloaded about July 27, 2019. I get only 3 colors, green for any CQ, yellow for me transmitting and red for someone calling me. None of the other options work. I have tried checking all of them, unchecking some of them, restarting and rebooting. I have looked for subtle settings that disable this feature and I can find none. It simply does not work! I really wish it would, your video really makes me want it to! Thanks for the nice video, but, alas...... 73

Hi Ron, Under the General Tab under settings, make sure the 'Show DXCC, grid, and worked-before status' box is checked. Then go to the colors tab and hit the 'Rescan ADIF Log' button. Then click OK and let me know if that fixes it... Stu - AG6AG
