So why isn't every zone play like this designed as read option? In the 2nd example, if Clifford has the option to tuck and run, he's got 10 yards of open field in front of him. The blitzing corner off the left side of the formation was locked onto Keyvone Lee the entire play, and even if he read Clifford pulling the ball he could never have gotten his hips flipped to pursue. Easy yards. Edit, he has the W linebacker to contend with, he didn't break down until after the handoff but that's one guy in open space, even if he makes an amazing play there's more yards available than what was run.

Great video, yet depressing. When we could not impose our will at the line against Nova, I knew it was going to be a rough season. Fingers crossed we finally get an average B10 line this season.

Cannot impose will on any OL anytime. Franklin sucks.

@@analogcrunch4716 Franklins run blocking has been all finnesse instead of power. Thats part because of the RPO but even other RPO teams haven't struggled this much.

There were reports that Villanova knew many of PSUs run plays. Regardless, the run game was a mess last year. Miranda and Eric Wilson were physically overmatched and shouldn't have been in there. Miranda especially got killed with a nose guard over him. Should have Tengwall sooner and for the love of God what happened to Des Holmes? Besides the poor blocking you can't run wide zone with slow RBs like Cain and Lee.
@ForTheBlogy
@ForTheBlogy 2 года назад
Agreed. Miranda just never picked up the nuances of playing center. Just shows that interior linemen aren't just interchangeable pieces like utility infielders in baseball.
@PSU2024

@@ForTheBlogy Not just the nuances, he was physically pushed around. He did not have the strength to hold his own at center.

Nourzad will be an upgrade at center over Miranda or Scruggs this year. book it

@@johnsongoat8131 Oline will be better by default just having Wilson and Miranda gone. Sal Wormley was on his way to start but got injured. Fashanu LT, Tengwall and Scruggs at OG, with Nourzad at center. Need Wallace to improve at RT. Will help having Nick Singleton at RB to give us speed we didn't have last season.

Bottom line coaches didn't fix this problem all year. In September FTB put a similar video out, after the Nova game, talking about how easy it is to fix the issues in the run blocking. But the coaches never fixed it. Franklin sucks at fixing problems DURING the season. Same thing with secondary pass D in 2019. Got exposed beginning of year and never got it fixed. Good recruiter, very average coach.

Psu strength and conditioning program has been sub par for years.

Is this (or was this) a Trautwein issue or a personnel issue? Is that why we've recruited so many OL this year/ To get the right types of big guys to run this system?
@nickkreiser154

The best part about this video is it shows that PSU runs a lot of zone running schemes. I always see a ton of blame placed on the RPO, as if that's what they run every single time, when in reality it's probably around 25% of the time. I think a lot of people who grew up watching the three yards in a cloud of dust era of football with power-i formations 95% of the time, hear "RPO" and equate it to any run out of a shotgun look, which obviously isn't the case. Just bc it's a run out of the gun/pistol, doesn't make it an RPO.
@ForTheBlogy
@ForTheBlogy 2 года назад
Agreed. Lot of misinformation about what RPO is within the general fanbase. Really, a lot of RPO concepts are just modern evolutions of old triple option schemes seen in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

I know a lot of this is mental mistakes by the OL, but you have to think the coaches shoulder some blame... Memory and reflex is what drills are all about. Supposedly Traut wasn't used to coaching zone blocking, so maybe this year that'll improve.

Coach Codutti I have a question. I have a friend that was a long time HS coach for West Deptford HS in NJ. When I show him these missed assignments in the blocking like the Iowa and Nova play where one of the Olineman were supposed to go block the LB on their combo, he always defends the coaches and says it's not on the scheme or coaching, it's on the players not executing correctly. But isn't it the coach's job to correct these things in practice? This went on all year. So my question is, do you blame the scheme or coaching (not getting it corrected) more, or are these mistakes more on the players?
@ForTheBlogy
@ForTheBlogy 2 года назад
Editor here. I'll let Coach speak for himself, but when he sent the video in I did ask if the fact that Penn State was a Inside Zone team for so many years played a role in the OL's inability to pick up the principles of Wide Zone/Outside Zone and he said the learning curve shouldn't have been that steep. Speaking for myself, it's quite possible that Penn State simply didn't have the athletes (Miranda, Wilson, etc) to execute this system. Because to get to those second level blocks it helps to create movement at the point of attack and that didn't happen a lot last year.
@nickkreiser154
@nickkreiser154 2 года назад
A coach can preach something until he is blue in the face, but if the players don't go out and execute, it's not worth a damn.
@PSU2024

PSUs Oline made so many mistakes as coach Codutti points out. They would always double team a DL, but leave an LB fire in unblocked?? I saw a 4th-1 vs MSU in 4th qtr. It was an inside hand off to Keyvone Lee. They were running right at the nose guard. Miranda didn't even try and block the nose guard. His assignment was to go right at the LB. While Scriggs the right OG was supposed to crack back the nose guard, but he didn't.

This is on Franklin. Every year OL is awful. He is soft and so are his teams. The OL coach also should have been fired a year ago.
