My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
This is the eighth video in a series of videos I will be producing to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. This video features the Yaesu FTdx10 transceiver and the Yaesu FTdx5000MP as they both battle QRM.

I don’t even like to like Yaesu. I just strive to provide objective truth. Yaesu could improve too. It’s just that they currently have affordable radios that excel where it matters most. 73, Doug

Another solid video Doug. Thanks for the hard work. If you have time and cables you might try extending the display to an external monitor and hook up a wired mouse to the usb. This might show some ease of use that would be a good alternative and avoiding accidentally bumping the vfo.

@@n4hnhradio Out of curiosity, and apologies if I have asked you this before, but what is your view of the IC7610?

John, I tried the IC-7610 when I chose the FTdx5000MP. I like how the 7610 looks. The ICOM DSP and filtering is just not at the same level as the Yaesu radios. And, when I was making my purchase decision, the 7610 was having display failures. 73, de N4HNH

@@n4hnhradio Doug it's the DSP that I keep coming back to. I own a 9700 and an FT891. If Yaesu released a 9700 competitor, I would drive to Martin Lynch tomorrow and go full Yaesu. I adore the ICOM GUI, but it worries me buying one of their HF rigs to find it can't deal with noise. The DNR on my 9700 is useless; I stopped using it ages ago.

That’s where ICOM falls behind. Yaesu has the best DSP. One of my viewers in Europe just bought the FTdx10 and he says he can finally enjoy ham radio again, after noise had taken away his enjoyment. 73, de N4HNH

It should be noted, long pressing the Notch-Cont/APF button will reset that function to default also

Indeed it does. With Yaesu radios, it’s a good idea to press buttons and knobs. You never know what you might get. 73, Doug

I have found that about 50% of the time, the previous Notch and Contour settings are where I want them (usually at or near the ends of the pass band). I used to start out by long pressing both, but found that I almost wished I had left it, because I RARELY want them in the middle of the passband. But yes, it's always nice to start at "ground zero" and work up from there... especially in the heat of battle, you need to know exactly where you are! 73 de KD2TJU

For my ears, I definitely prefer the audio on the FT-5000 over the FTDX10. I also don't care for the spectrum display on the FTDX10 (spectrum scopes and Panadapters are great for those who like them, just not something I find impressive enough to spend the money on). I guess I'll wait until I can get a screaming deal on a 5000MP to replace my FTDX1200.

The FTdx5000MP is still my favorite. But, sadly, it has been discontinued. A few people have found one here and there that was the last one or two in stock. 73, de N4HNH

Doug, yes I’ve been following your vids. I have to give creds unlike others you really dig in and get to know your rigs deep set features and show how to use them in combination. Still running the ft3k and love it. Looking for a “good” reason to update. That ft5k is really still holding its own isn’t it! Top of the mark like the yaesu Mark V was for many years. No USB interface, no built in sound card, no external video out, but wow what a receiver. I think your being kind to find the ft10 as equal but we’re talking digital SDR vs classic analog minus DNR receiver section. For the money the ftdx10 would be a great buy. Nice job...detailed and solid work. BTW...does the FTDx10 have the special 4K TBWF button push?

Thanks! I will stick with my 5K but I will give credit to the FTdx10. It’s an unbelievable value. No, the FTdx10 doesn’t have the option to transmit beyond the 3KHz limit. The widest TX BPF setting is 30-3050Hz. 73, de N4HNH

For speakers, I bought these except off Ebay for $70.... Bose companion 2 series iii. (Be aware, you would need a cable that is mono on one end and stereo on the other, which I can not find, or a 3.5 mono to 3.5 stereo adapter in order to get output to both speakers.

Be very careful not to present any less than a 4-Ohm load to the FTdx10 audio output. It is rated for 4 to 16 Ohms. Two SP-30 speakers in parallel would be 2 Ohms. A 2 Ohm load would eventually damage the audio amplifier in the FTdx10. 73, de N4HNH

Great video , I current run a ft 950 been thinking about getting a 5000 but this ftdx 10 looks like a great radio at half the price approx in uk , Do you think I would see much a difference on the receive from my ft 950 my qrm levels have increased since lock downs more broad band users I guess thanks again for the video

Hi Nigel! One of my subscribers said he got the FTdx10 and he can finally hear in his noisy environment. I would say it is on par with the 5000. In fact, on CW it might have a slight edge. I’m splitting hairs trying to nail that down. The filters seem to have a tighter slope. It can knock down QRM like a boss, slightly edging out the 5000 on CW. Of course that’s while not allowing the 5000 to use it’s VRF or mu-tuning preselectors. But, yes, at less than half the price of the 5000, it is neck and neck with it, and possibility slightly better on CW. I think you would probably notice a difference over the FT-950, even though the FT-950 is no slouch. 73, Doug

I think they are fairly equal. I just prefer the ergonomics of the knobs, the real meter, the esthetics, and the 5000 has a naturally quiet receiver. When I was deciding, 18 months ago, the 5000 had the better DSP, especially Digital Noise Reduction. But the DSP in the FTdx10 is as good as the 5000, so I feel certain that the 101 has that firmware available now. They share the same internal architecture. You can’t go wrong with either. I would say that if you prefer the fancy display, go for the 101. If you prefer to access the most used features with a knob, then go for the 5000. If you want a bandscope for the 5000, you will need to buy the SM-5000 speaker/scope. 73, de N4HNH

My speaker came today. You gotta quit. LOL. At least let me order all this stuff at one time to save on shipping. Doug maybe you can tell us why you have the multi option on the display. Explain what we are looking at and the benefit of seeing the oscilloscope and AF-FFT. 73

Ha! It’s funny that you mention the multi-mode display. I don’t even care about that stuff. I worked on radios for a living so I’ve seen enough oscilloscopes. I just had that enabled for those who might want to see it. I’m happy with the bandscope in my SM-5000. The oscilloscope let’s you see the amplitude of the audio. You can see what we call flat-topping, which produces a not so pleasant sounding audio. The AF-FFT display at the lower right hand side provides a view of the audio spectrum. You can use this to see the transmit audio bandwidth. These displays function for both receive and transmit. 73, de N4HNH

This guy drives me crazy! Every time he says...Notice how this setting changes the sound, he then keeps talking so you can't hear the difference. ALMOST a very helpful video. Argggh!

"Digital noise reduction" - lol! All it does is seem to cut the high frequency response, I can do that with an inductor in series with the external speaker. It makes everything sound muddled.

I don't understand you guys who like to spend the time to do youtube radio comparisons but haven't spent $30 on a set of good sounding - even used - matching speakers (such as a set of Boston CR5s) so we are listening to the *radio* and not some cheap-arse speaker comparison.

@@n4hnhradio i just picked one up as well as the ftdx10. really wish the ftdx10 had a rx antenna on back. that would have made it amazing. Am i going to be disappointed with 7300? keep in mind i love the lowbands and have a DX engineering RTR receive antenna controller for beverages. plan for ftdx is to use to get back into contesting. 7300 for general use

That sounds like a good plan. You might find that the receiver in the FTdx10 will negate the need for a beverage antenna. My FTdx5000MP is so good at filtering that I took down my receive antenna. I use the techniques I show on my channel to minimize the noise from the front-end of the receiver forward, and then I let DNR finish up. The DNR in the FTdx10 can usually handle it with algorithm 1, 2, or 3. 73, de N4HNH
