Hamburger Hochbahn, the underground and main bus company of Hamburg, is currently testing electrically driven buses on line 109 (Hauptbahnhof/ZOB-Alsterdorf). These are diesel electric hybrid buses, battery buses, and fuel cell buses.
This video presents the fuel cell buses. In spring and summer of 2017 there were 12 meter buses from Mercedes and articulated buses from Solaris tested on line 109. Both of them have got electric traction motors. Electricity is produced by a fuel cell where hydrogen and oxygen (from air) react with each other. The only other product of this reaction is water (steam). Both buses have a battery on board as a buffer, delivering energy during acceleration and taking up energy during braking.
The additional equipment (compared to a normal bus) is mounted on the roof. The side panels give the buses a bulky appearance, like a low floor tram. A ride on these buses feels very dynamic, both buses accelerate quite fast. The feeling on board of the solaris fuel cell bus is very similar to that on board of the Solaris trolley bus in Eberswalde ( • O-Bus Eberswalde - Som... ).
