Thank you so much for posting this. I wish you would have shown how much of a pain in the ass it is with the tool and fighting with the seal, but all in all, this video saved me a lot of time.
2002 Audi A4 Quarto Thank You for you clear step by step video. Here are the additional steps I had to take. I did take pictures but I cannot see how to upload them, sorry. 1st I had ¾ of a tank of gas. I tried using an electric fuel pump to pump out the gas from both the left side transfer pump side and the right side fuel pump side. No luck it only pumped out about a gallon of fuel. Since I was outside, I loosened the ring completely but only opened the edge of pump enough to keep the gas leaking inside of the car. This worked but obviously was a little dangerous with a few gallons of fuel on the ground. 2nd I do not have the removal tool. I tried to twist the basket but it would not move. Using the new basket as a guide I located the three (3) tabs holding the pump in place. I gently placed a flat screwdriver blade between the basket and the plastic housing. I twisted the screwdriver just enough to get the first tab to release. I did the same for the second tab. Then I was able to turn it to the left and remove the basket. 3rd re-assembly was not hard once I aligned the 3 tabs to the plastic housing. With a snap it was locked in place and I was able to complete the job. One thing which through me off was there is NOT 12v at the pump with the key on. There is 12 v at the pump with the key in the start position. This initially made me think there was a problem with the Fuel Pump Relay or the ECU. They were never the problem but it did cause me to chase a phantom ECU problem. Do not make my mistake. Change the Fuel Pump. BTW this is my first post to RU-vid. ;-)
if u don't have special tool and remove pump solenoid itself out of center it will allow u too put open end wrench through slots of the basket and use a crecent wrench to turn counter clockwize note: basket sleeve only has to travel 1/2 an inch counter clockwize if more you may damage float arm or leveling pump tubing.the pump solenoid is removed by unplugging and gently prying open the three of the 6 or 5 plastic tabs with the prongs on inside that hold solenoid in. vid helped alot still though had tried for a while without knowing what way to turn without luck.
When I disconnect the fuel lines on a diesel before removing the fuel sending unit, will I have to bleed the fuel system after putting the system back together? (audi a6 quattro 2005)
thanks for the awesome video it's very helpful, my only problem is finding the correct fuel pump assembly, could you tell me which part number you used for this job? My car is also a v6 quattro, and it doesn't have a return line, but I can't find that pump anywhere
my mechanic said replacing the fuel pump is going to be a 3 hour job but this looks pretty straight forward with the special tools. He said they're going to need to take the whole gas tank off. Im not sure if he knows that you can get to it from the seat like that. Is it much different for 2002 a4 1.8t?
EDGEMOTORS i dont have a new gasket, special tools, or any mechanical experience. I do however have a new vdo pump. Should i give it a shot or buy the tools and gasket first?
EDGEMOTORS i managed to remove the fuel pump but i am having a lot for trouble installing the new one. I can't get it to be secured into the basket. i really wish i had that wrench. i removed the old pump using 2 screw drivers. thought i could install the new one the same way but its proving to be very difficult. Any pointers please?
Well you could try to take the return line off and suck the fuel through that port, it will take some time but better than having a several gallons of fuel spill into the car...
You right, you absolutely can do it with out special tool.... Just like I said in the video, I've done many of them with out tool too.... But it makes it so much easier with the tool
Great videos EDGEMOTORS, I have a 2005 AUDI A4 1.8T and it has a po420 and now it stalls randomly and a epc lite came on! Would you or anyone know if this could be caused from low fuel pressure? It doesn't start right back up sometimes and seems to bog sometimes as well. Any help figuring this out will be very appreciated.
Show how to clean the basket plase. Mine basket has alot of very small peaces, rest offs from the sealing ring which was falling apart. I've tried to clean them out by hand, but after 15 minutes there ware still a lot of little particles which I couldn't grab so easyly with my hand. Do you use some sort of cloth or something or how did you do it?
I have a 2006 2.5l Jetta with 155k miles on it.. And I notice at times when the tank is a 1/4 to 1/2 full I can hear a beeping noise(like the timer on a bomb)coming from the trunk on the right side. As well as a knocking sound as if someone is locked in the trunk and trying to escape from the right side. Both sounds do stop after a few minutes, but it seems to happen if I haven't driven it in a few days. Another thing that happens is, when I fill the tank up it won't start right away, it will kill. I would have to pump the gas pedal while not on a few times then crank it. But in order for it to stay on I have to idle it for a couple of seconds, after that it runs fine. I also replaced the MAF sensor, air filter, and valve cover because I got a code P2279 and it was stalling & jerking. So I don't know if it's the fuel filter or fuel pump that's causing this issue.
Bump! Edgemotors.. I have had only one issue. The basket is full of dirt and so was the prefilter. How to remove debris from the basket and why was debris in there in the first place. The pump died because of the debris since the prefilter was black. Might have to pull out basket
The sending unit is on the basket, the block is just the float, the other side of the tank ( driver side) has a second sending unit( as the tank is divided in two)
Is that a quattro? I have an 02 A4 3.0 FWD and when I pulled the seat and then the access panel, all I saw was a heat shield. Is the pump location different on the FWD model?
hello i have an 04 audi a4 1.8t quattro i would like to know why is there 2 covers under the rear seats, i know rear passenger side is for fuel pump but i don't know what the other side if for? thank you
Hello is their any other way of taking off the fuel lines on top of the pump? Or where can I get some pliers like that? I'm having a hard time taking it off. Hopefully you can respond back
well if you already tried and damaged the connectors, the pliers might not help you ... here is the link to the pliers... www.ebay.com/itm/like/261781072101?lpid=82&chn=ps
The tank shape is different so as the fuel transfer system, so no, the pump it self is most likely different, but the process of changing it is the same.
I cannot seem to find something like mine, where the pump is solid, so it doesn't have that bendy part and it doesn't seal like these, it's just the oring and the securing ring and it has the return aswell... weird
Thanks for the video, very helpful! I was wondering if you knew anything about passat 4motion v6's. A mechanic has told me there are 2 pumps that have to be changed whenever the fuel pump fails and has given me a quote of 1800 euros to do the job. This sounds crazy expensive to me, and i thought the part under the driver side rear seat was only a fuel level sender or something like that? I see another similar question below and am wondering if the answer also relates to my car?
i have a 2002 a4 1.8t my car has no codes turns over but won't start i have put a new crank shaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor even a new water temp sensor and it still will not start i press the little valve on the fuel rail and gas comes out and now it just shows the epc light but no code what do u think it might be thx for your help
gsrjoe00 you have top read live data and see if the computer recognizes rpms while you cranking the car... if not there is something wrong with the crank sensor or wiring...
hello nice vid btw is the procedure the same or similar for the fwd cars? how hard is it to tool without the special tools is it possible to do it? thanks
the procedure will be simular... it is posible with out special tools, but you have to be very carefull... especially with those fuel line connectors. once you damage it, it will turn into nightmare...
Hey thanks bro but i got through was pretty simple my car was making the dreaded humming noise and i changed out the pump with a walbro gss278 thats a 190lph fuel pump the pump itself is smaller than the original vdo pump but it pushes more lph had to do some small modifications nothing to technical now the pump works no more noise etc but the car cuts off randomly during driving have you ever gotten a issue like that it did it before the pump change out as well any thoughts n the subject will be very thankful.
in order to tell what is going on, you need to find out what excactly is happening when it cutts off. is it ecu cutting it off or something is mulfunctioning, you need to see if you got any codes, and try to see if your innjectors turn off when it shuts off. it could be a crankshaft position sensor mulfunctioning and the ecu thinking that you trying to turn the car off.
Hello awesome video by the way!.. I called a few auto parts and they tell me that a fuel filter on my 02 audi 1.8 t is not servisable. Is there a fuel filter on this car or not? My fuel pump started making a Whistling noise a few month ago . now suddenly the car won't start. .. Thanks for any help
Carlos arancibia yes there is filter in your car. you should get it from a dealer. as it has a fuel pressure regulator in it and aftermarket filter could give you allot of problems.
EDGEMOTORS I bought a Meyle Products fuel filter for my 2003 a6 quattro twin turbo. The fuel filter is made in Germany, do you have any opinion on this please,,,,,,,,
Hello again. Same car trying to keep it alive..lol.. Today my 1.8 t almost over heated..it started but I turn the heater on and it went down to normal (i was in line of burger king drive thru by the way) after that it stayed normal for the rest of the day... What's your opinion my expert good friend?
Joe Carrillo not really, it all depends on which pump, you have 2 pumps one is a low pressure 350$ list price original, and about 1-1.5 hour labor... the other one is about 450$ list and .6 hours labor.
I'm having trouble with my B5 A4 1.8tqm. I scanned it with my v-checker and the code p1517 came up it said (main relay malfunction). The car doesn't start sometimes.
Hello, I've an Audi A6 2.5 Tdi AKE Engine. Well, I was having some problem with the Injection Bosch Pump as advised by the Mechanic . I ordered one Injection Pump from UK with the same part number for the same AKE engine. Upon installation, the engine still is not starting or igniting. The Injection is not getting enough fuel for starting the engine as said by the mechanic. I am getting Really confused with this car. Can someone help me in finding the exact problem? Thnx
Hello not sure if you are still answering questions here but i currently have a fuel pump problem. My car started to not want to start today an now it wont start at all just cranks over. I checked the spark plugs an coils all good but they were dry. I than had someone hit my fuel tank with a wrench why i tried to start it an it starts up but dies almost instantly. It only stays running a bit if i keep the key turned into crank mode. Soon as i let the key back it dies. My question is there seems to be 2 fuel pumps? I have audi a6 2.7t the twin turbo model. Do i need to replace both or do you think replacing just the passenger side one will fix the problem im having? I also had a ECU code popping up on dash but it has went off. Thanks if can any response is greatly appreciated.
your car only have one pump, its on the passenger side. the other side only has a level sensor... and you pump is dead if you hit the tank and it starts.
EDGEMOTORS i had a fuel pump failure on my vw passat.when removing the fuel pump from the tank i noticed it was completely ripped apart.how can that possibly happen?vw passat 06
you have to twist the pump basket by hand, taking it out will be very easy... but putting it back in with out the tool might be a nightmare....... good luck
EDGEMOTORS Hello Boss, I have been trying all day to replay by 2004 audi A4 fuel pump with no good results. Which way do you twist the pump basket basket?
EDGEMOTORS I've had the same issue as the person above. I have been turning counter clockwise for the last hour and I still haven't been able to get the fuel pump out. I would like to know how you were able to remove and install the fuel pump without your "special tool". You've said you've done this many times. Are there any tips you can give for other tools to use if you don't have a "special tool". At this point, I am going to go ask a shop for this tool because I have no way to remove the fuel pump by hand....without destroying it. This seems to be the same problem the person had that tried to fix the car before bringing it to you. Any advise would help. Thanks
OK, so how do you get the thing out without the fuel wrench please, I don't really want to pay $50 dollars for a fuel wrench,,,, thank you good sir,,,,,,,
I did get it out by hand, but the clip closest to the back seat was the hardest to undo. So I took a razor blade and held VERY tightly in an angled needle-nosed pliers and just cut it out. I was throwing it away so it didn't mater if it damaged it even more,,,, GOD BLESS all....
here you go www.autotoolworld.com/product.asp?itemid=125861&gclid=Cj0KEQiAsueiBRCT8YOM4PDElsYBEiQAaiI4ILUdVYGwGU77DKeVKnw7pGilUyaHBSHAi9Bh8avU-kcaAqWp8P8HAQ
reason I ask is I have had a p0171 lean code that I am having trouble diagnosing and It made me curious if this could be the cause. It starts and runs fine with no noise so I'm guessing its not the pump. Ruled out a vacuum leak so i'm evaluating the fuel system now.
Yeah tell me about it. Its a B6A4 1.8T. I've replaced a ton of stuff so far without success. I found a local guy with vagcom that is gonna run the numbers for me. I hope we find the culprit.
37 likes 7 dislikes 26 comments and no one didnt notice he didnt show the fuel gauge. He showed the cold and hot gauge lol. In the beginning of the video he did but towards the end he didn't. Dislike for me cause you sir didn't show the fuel gauge at the end. Lol. Nice tool for the pump where can I get one at.
