Just bought this kit as a take everywhere camera with a jpeg only workflow. It’s my first Fuji and I’m genuinely excited at the concept of just focussing more on composition and colour, and having files ready to share with family/friends straight out of camera.
Finally, after 10 hours of research, I think I'm going with the X-E4 (was also considering X-T30). What a journey, thank you for your invaluable advice!
Young Man, This is one of best camera video reviews I’ve seen in a while. You nicely covered the technical, creative and practical aspects. So articulate and non-b.s. Thank you. I just placed a (back)order, to complement my XT20.
Sir, I think you have great content. You analyze and compare this camera so well. I think your consumer, and realistic, suggestion is super super great and useful. Thanks for the rad video, my dude
this is by far the best XE4 review I’ve seen. Keep up the amazing work! You mentioned so many details the other RU-vidrs just ignored. You really helped me in my decision to buy the Fujifilm XE4. Greetings from Germany.
"Cameras have to inspire you to shoot". 💯💯 I dropped my Nikon full frame for the xt4 recently and I love this thought. Using the fuji has rekindled my love for photography
*watches X-S10 video* "This is exactly the camera I need to save up for." *Patrick releases an X-E4 video a month later* "I think THIS X-E4 + 27mm combo is what I'm going to be saving up for" 🙃
@@joetreadonme I mentioned why in the video. They’re different cameras. Do you want a deep hand grip with a flip out screen and IBIS? Get the XS10. Not everyone needs that shit.
I’ve never understood why the x100 series got more shine than the xe series. Great vid ..... Fuji cameras age so well that I’m content with my xe2 and 27mm v1 lens. I would recommend the xe4 in a heartbeat to a beginner over most other new Fuji offerings.
i think x100's and x-pros are one of those "if you get it you get it" scenario. Personally I like the experience of just going out and shoot with the OVF then see the pictures later when I'm done. Maybe it's for the fake film experience, or maybe people genuinely prefer it this way, I certainly do. There is something about not getting the perfect picture with perfect framing, and then being surprised how they turn out, or have hundreds of useless pictures because you accidentally changed the setting. All that said, I like the xe too, in fact I got one. But having to pick one camera I'd pick the ones with OVF any day.
@@rizkiyoist God especially their X-Pro line. My first serious camera was the original x100 years back. But my current X-Pro3 is unlike anything. It just feels so... right.
First time I have seen your channel, for a young guy you seem to know what your talking about. You May have already converted me to get this camera, even though I have recently got a XT 30 . Love Fuji love them. Thanks
@@JoeLopez I agree sir, I recently sold my Nikon APS-C system to get my first Fuji mirrorless. I love how compact and complicated it is. Love the analog dials and many buttons customization and ability to adapt vintage lenses. What I don't like is low battery life and lack of japanese 3rd party lenses.
I’m super hyped on this camera as a b cam to my xt4! I was once interested in the x100 series but now I can’t justify the price when this thing is so cheap and versatile! Awesome video bro!
@@impatrickt Keep up the good work man, def one of my favorite fuji shooters. I plan on making alot more content on youtube for 2021 and hopefully can grow quickly like you did!
This may be something I pick up. My XT-4 is great for photos but it's too good for video for me to not use it for video all the time. That means I still don't have a dedicated fuji camera for photos.
I think I’ve watched this video 3 times. What you say about cameras at around the 8:56 truly resonates ‘a camera should inspire you to shoot’... Great POV 👌🏽✨
Great video man! Got an Xe4 and was feeling a bit uninspired and started looking elsewhere. This has proven the worth of the camera and made me want to use it more!
Dude, your reviews are my faves!! Straight to the point, informative and relaxed! Cheers from a fellow Fuji-shooter! Btw, cool camera! Have an XT-4 and bought a X100F, but kinda thought it was too cumbersome and sold it & got XS10, which to me is the best camera Fuji has ever made! -But thinking about this at some point, because of the formfactor and the newer sensor / af & touchscreen.
Hey Patrick, thank you so much for making videos like these, explaining things as you explain them. You help me a lot to understand everything. Never stop making videos like this. Thanks amigo. 😃👍
Thanks for your review, you have convinced me to buy an X-E4 or X-T3(0). I'm a beginner and I think it's a better idea to avoid niche products like the X100, no matter how cool they are. Might buy a used X100V later when it's very cheap. I think it's important for me to have the room to experiment with different lenses.
A few years ago one of my military buddies sent me his pristine X100S when he changed to another brand. He still says he took the greatest pics of his life w/ that X100s. I too have had great success with it as I use it for BW 90% of the time but I really miss using different lenses. For me, the X-E4 would be my daily driver and a Sony A7iii for everything thing else. Thk for a super review. Peace.
Excellent review. You have a new subscriber! I've been at this business of image making since 1979, where my first 35mm was a Ricoh 35G. I'm very fond of the rangefinder form-factor. I found Fujifilm in 2014 after over 30 years of Nikon, with some Pentax and Canon, and fell in love with the X100. So in 2022, after owning and using all five versions of the X-100, I've ordered an X-E4 and this nifty 27mm 2.8 WR. I'm thinking it'll feel familiar, and I get to use my other favorite Fujinons...namely the 16mm 1.4 (which is fixed more or less on my X-T2) and my new Tokina 33mm 1.4. If all goes as planned, this X-E4 and 27mm WR will give me back my beloved X-100, and still enjoy the X-T and X-E series. Cheers, and thanks
Like your review, you said a lot of sensible things about this camera and the Fuji experience. You are spot on by saying ‘a camera should inspire you’ well done.
I am an XE4 owner. The X100V has been made by the American social media into an emotive camera. It plays on your emotions by tugging at your desire to appear hip, trendy, and and skillful in an old school fashion, projecting yourself as an experienced “player”. Hence, such an emotive camera would be a perfect choice if the user’s favourite focal length is 27mm APSC, doesnt intend to buy any additional lenses and was already a highly skilled and experienced photography enthusiast looking now looking for a casually fun camera that complements his/her image. Its the same as an F1 driver buying the current Mazda Miata MX5 as a weekend fun car to be driven around for fun and to show off. The XE4 is not an emotive camera but much more practical as it allows enthusiast to continue improving via exploring and enjoying different focal lengths. Although the X100V is an excellent camera. This is totallu useless as its price has been prostituted to a ridiculous level long ago and even more ridiculous today….when it doesnt even have IBIS and a top-spec EVF at such a ludicruously high price.
For straight out of camera jpeg shooters the X-E4 is a no-brainier, it is much improved over my X-E3. In addition, the flip screen has enabled me to take shots that I could not capture with a fixed screen. As usual, focus peaking is spot on, enabling me to get razor sharp shot with manual lenses. Great build quality and of course the X-E4 offers the exact same image and beautiful rendition of the X100V as they share the same X-Trans IV sensor/processor, anybody saying they are somehow different is just being silly! If you want rangefinder styling and want to change lens then the X100V is not for you. At that price point the 27mm and X-E4 is a bargain, you are getting the same sensor and performance as the X100V, X-Pro3 and X-T4 and you choose the lens to put on it.
X100t is my favorite camera in years and I’m glad there are companies out there who still cater to different demographics. Having a ICL body is great and all but sometimes you just want one body, one lens and go out to shoot. Some of the greatest photographers in history pretty much went off with one body and one focal length. If you’re looking for a good budget camera I’d suggest a used x100f. The shooting experience is unique enough that even when you get a full ICL system started you’ll revisit it time to time.
I’ve been so drawn to these cameras lately and watching so many review videos, trying to figure out if this is something that would be worth the cost for me. I’d been feeling a bit silly for wanting it, since I have another mirrorless that I like and I could edit the photos to have a more filmic look. But you managed to really capture that piece of why I think I’m seeking something different, and that is the inspiration piece. I’m inspired by these images I’m seeing and I want to try and see what I could do with it. Not having to edit them to get the film look just means more time to, I don’t know, make a scrapbook with the prints which is something I really love doing and a way I enjoy the photos I take. Thank you for putting it into perspective! Definitely hoping to buy used, and I’m still looking at some older Fujifilm models, but you made me feel justified in why I’m doing this search in the first place.
Do it. I’ve only shot with Canon and I love it, but going out with a big camera to places where you wanna be less noticeable is hard to do 😂 I just bought one 2 days ago on mpb, sadly the silver version 🙄 but I’ve seen at least 3 more pop up these past 2 days after I ordered mine
Used to shoot with a Sony a6100 but wasn’t much of a rewarding feeling shooting with that camera so I switch to shooting film. Your review made me intrigued into deciding to sell my Sony and switch to Fuji...
For someone who has hopped countless times between Fuji and Sony over the last years (since I was mostly shooting film and now only digital). I keep settling with Fuji. In terms of build quality and enjoying shooting with it. It's a lot more rewarding and I take the Fuji with me every single time. With the Sony it's not. May be different for you but I never regret quitting film when I got a Fuji. I just quit before the film camera prices went up like a maniac.
The big thing for me on the X100v is the weather sealing and the Built in ND filter. Though saving money and getting the extra 3 Fuji film simulations are tempting me
@@impatrickt I just like they they have the ND available and I often am in the rain or snow with my camera. 4stop ND in video since the update seems so nice because I do hate threading those things on and off
Three years ago I picked up a used XE-2, popped a manual olympus lens + an adapter on it just so I could shoot. I quickly replaced that setup with the 18-55? Then I bought the 7Artisans 25mm and that served me well for some time. Finally, I think, I bought a 18mm Fujinon and that fine lens has stayed with me to this day. I've used Fuji since 2013, the X10, X-S1, X30 and all were good solid cameras and I enjoyed using them. I think if I ever need another camera I might go with the X-PRO2 or possibly one of the X-100 series.
Great video, was deliberating over fuji cameras and the x-e4 with the grip attachments + a pancake/short prime + general zoom make it a fantastic portable kit
Wonderful review! Very detailed and informative. My main camera is an X-T30, but I’ve been looking for something more compact. I think the X-E4 might be the one.
That intro was spicy dude. This camera definitely has me intrigued. Biggest drawback on the X100 for me was fixed lens, so something like this works for my photo workflow. Still rocking the X-Pro 2, but could be tempted by this.
@@sirlost94 X-E4 has X-Trans 4 sensor, bigger ISO range, 4K/30p video, and 5 years of technical advancements X-Pro 2 is weather sealed, has optical viewfinder, faster mechanical shutter, dual memory card slot. Ultimately, pick the one that best suits your needs.
Awesome as always! I have been a long time Olympus and Ricoh GR user for personal photography and have always wanted to try out the Fuji X100 series cameras. I LOVE how small that X-E4 is and may decide to try it out.
Dude what a great video! Though i dont understand most of the camera thingy u explained, i still find it very useful for someone thats looking for a camera only for a casual use. Keep it up! :)

OMG this is such a nice camera!!! If I ever have enough money in the future, I would totally rock this as a travel cam/bcam!!! I agree that the camera experience is so much better with a camera! Ive only shot with the XT3 once but it was AMAZING! Photography is so fun and I can’t walk to do more! Especially with my best friend!!! The video features are also nuts on this tiny thing, especially compared to something like the XT30! 2 days on Moment to Canada!?!? WOW!!! Awesome video as always Patrick!!! 😁
Dude what a great video! Though i dont understand most of the camera thingy u explained, i still find it very useful for someone thats looking for a camera only for a casual use. Keep it up! :)
I think the new X-E4 along with the 27mm is rather an alternative to the GRIII than the x100v ... often the GRIII is compared to the X100V and the form factor makes the grIII more prone to streetphotography than the x100v ... now Fuji has a camera that is competetive to grIII ...
Nope; The XF10 is the more obvious rival to the GR3. I find it flawless, despite much criticism. I hasten to add I also have an XE4 and use both on the street. Horses for courses :-)
Great video Patrick. Your reviews are always very well done. Something you didn’t talk about that I’m interested in is build quality. I got a X-E2 years ago when Fuji were still making them in Japan and the build quality rivals the X-Pro line. The X-E3 I picked up last summer was so disappointing though. Even the dials were made from some cheap plastic and felt like they could break over time with a lot of use. Any thoughts on the build quality of the XE-4? I’m worried the cheap price may equal cheap build quality too.
the XS10 feels cheaper but "feels" cheap is difficult to understand as new plastics get lighter they feel cheaper but they're actually stronger. if you try a new Canon R5 or A7siii you'd think it was made out of fisher price plastic! the X-E4 is a little brick. its not heavy but it's solid.
The XE4 looks light-weight but feels like a hefty brick when fitted with an equally well built 35mm f2 lens👍 Its definitely not a flimsy, lightweight, plasticky camera (unlike the Canon M50 which I also considered before buying XE4).
I have the XT3 and purchased it with the 16-80 f4. I think I will buy the pancake lens for my XT3. When I get the money to splurge the seXy-E4 will be on my list for sure. Thanks for the very informative video!
Thank you Patrick for the review. I am confused between X-S10 and X-E4. I do street photography and landscape with zoom lenses. What would be the ideal fuji for me here. This is going to be the first Fuji for me. I don’t like the look of X-S10 and love the look of X-E4. People complain about lack of buttons on X-E4 but being new to Fuji system, will it impact on my photography? What would be ideal buy for me from X-S10, X-T30 and X-E4? Thanks.
I have an XT-4 and many XF lenses. I'm a stills photographer and the arrival of the X-E4 meant the price of the X-E3 dropped drastically. I just bought a brand new 'X-E3 body only' on clearance sale for £316 GBP ($440 USD). It's an incredible bargain and a great 'spare body' and street camera for half the price of the X-E4. The image quality is still impeccable. Very happy
I have the X-E3, it is an amazing price but the X-E4 firmware updates that your X-T4 has for us film recipe jpeg shooters is well worth me getting the X-E4.
Great review. I have the X-E2 which I shoot with manual vintage lenses. But was thinking about an upgrade. The XE4 looks very smart, Bit like a baby Leica. I just pre-ordered the 27 mk2. It will be my first and only Fuji lens. If it's as good as others are saying this will become my main lens for the XE2 and possibly the 4 at some point. Keep up the good work mate!
No substitute for the leaf shutter + flash for daylight portraiture with the X100-series, otherwise you need a big rig to swallow the Sun. X100V + X-E4 w/ XF50mmF2 would be a killer kit.
@@impatrickt It's the only way to darken the background without large HSS flash etc, that's all. If you don't know how or why to use it, it doesn't matter. (There's a great Fuji X100F promo of a fashion photographer using the TCL and flash to take a series while the model is walking - look it up to see what I mean.)
i have two X100 series cameras. I’ve never used the ND once. The F2 lens is literally indiscernible in quality to the f2.8 pancake. Weather sealing doesnt matter. Ive used the XE4 in snow, rain, dust, and mud. have never failed me. the XE4 is the better camera.
@@impatrickt Makes sense. But for me interchangeable lens in not an advantage. Using large expensive lens with such small camera is not my use case. I choose not to sacrifice the features I've mentioned, more organic lens design, built-in flash, better viewfinder etc. Both cameras are great and which one to choose is more about personal preferences and use cases 🙂 What do you think about xf10? Did you had a chance to try it somewhere?
some of my favorite photos have been on cheap disposable film cameras. the x100v fits the way I like to capture pictures. I am exactly the person that camera was created for.
It’s true. I have the X100F and XT4 already, because they’re just so different in terms of usability, and I wanted to upgrade to X100V, but now that this XE4 is out it’s really tempting. However, it doesn’t have leaf shutter and built in ND filter. So it’s a toss up for me. Points for XE4: smaller, interchangeable lens, possible OIS with lens. Points for X100V: leaf shutter, ND filter, view Finder (which I don’t use). “Better” lens than the 27mm if you want that form factor. It’s still a difficult decision for me. But on the other hand, I can just keep the X100F, and buy the XE4 for about the same price.
Saw the Toronto Public Library in that one shot and immediately subscribed. I've been shooting Sony for about 5 years now but have been thinking about grabbing an X100V for bumming around. However, this may have changed my mind!
Thank you. Great presentation and I look forward to receiving mine shortly. One thing that has appealed to me is the intent of simplicity. As they state in their marketing. Make more with less and as a hobbyist I have been overwhelmed with my full frame camera.
I think you are 100% correct about xe4 vs x100v if you either have other Fuji x mount cameras or if this is your 1 camera but I think in my case the x100v makes more sense. 1) I have a stupid amount of gear acquisition syndrome and this great little camera doesn’t tempt me for new glass and 2) for everything that I’d want a bigger more versatile lens, I have my Canon EOS RP. However I think if you don’t have that same gear syndrome the XE4 does make more sense with that pancake
The X-E series of cameras have ALWAYS been an overall better option to the X100 series of cameras. Being an interchangeable lens camera series is what gives it the edge. It would have been nice if Fujifilm made this a weather-sealed camera like the X100v considering they're selling it as a kit with the 27mm f2.8 R WR MkII lens. It's counter-intuitive to have a weather-sealed lens with a non-weather-sealed body. But I get it, if this camera was weather-sealed, and had IBIS it would have cost more than the X100v and they didn't want that. Great camera and I'll get one, one day but for now I'm going to continue enjoying my X-E2s.
No, XE is NEVER better than X100 for me, and probably for many. X100 has more attractive look, slimmer profile. Leaf shutter, built in ND filter is also convenient. The fact that X100 cannot change lens is a bonus to me. If I only do photograph, I will definitely buy the X100V only.
@@tuannguyent.3696 good for you. I didn't make my comment to debate the issue. I made my comment as someone who understands product marketing. That said, you're entitled to your personal preference. It doesn't make my statements any less valid.
I didn’t see the announcement for this today, I was watching your video instead. I am assuming it’s weather sealed? That would be the only thing that would keep me from jumping from the x100v to the x-e4. Great shots
not weather sealed but I only own one weather sealed fuji (the X-T3) and ive never had an issue. X100T, OG X100, X30 etc no weather sealing, use em in rain, snow, armpit sweat, the works. no issues ever.
Good review I think the reason for same sensor is that they don’t make apsc sensors. They buy them from Sony And I think it is simply more practical rather then having Sony make other sensors The pancake is an f2.8. Is a f4.2 in full frame terms So not a fast lens I would put my Viltrox 23mm f1.4. Yes larger but much faster and less grain in low light
I've wanted a fuji camera for so long now, was really looking at a used Xt-3 (Xt-4 out of my pockets used or not lol) I just got my GH5 for all my video needs and as a secondary photo shooter is freakin awesome, but I;ve wanted a fuji for photos first and back up video and man im starting to lean towards this X-E4, though I will be bummed out for the lack of twisty knobs and buttons, something to just shoot photos or let the wife use for her youtube videos is really appealing!, great video as always.,
As a someone who shoots street a lot, I could see this as my gateway into Fuji. Was considering the xs10, now I'm not so sure. Nice review and food for thought.
@@impatrickt Exactly. Fuji are one of the only manufacturers that give you their flagship sensor and processor no matter the camera you choose. That's huge. You only have to worry about price point, form factor etc. but knowing you will still have the same image output quality as their best APS-C. That makes it a unique product offering. I wish they kept the rear dial on the this model however. I'm a rear dial guy.
I have to be honest, I really don't care much about Fuji cameras, not for any reason really, but Patrick this video had me stuck from start to finish! Damn, this is a really good video, and pls say hi to Fran for me :)
All the negative comments with regards to the X-E4. I wanted a small form factor pocketable camera for hiking and mountain biking rather than packing the X-T3. I picked the X-E4 I really like it. This also coming from an ex X-100f owner. I would say do not hate it until you have had one in your hand.
Good info, but as someone who's owned an X100f and XE3 at the same time, I have to disagree that the XE is better; especially for someone who already has an interchangeable body. Leaf shutter is much quieter, and yes the pancake is small - buts its a f 2.8. If you want that 35mm equivalent, and f2.0 - X100 series delivers that - with a quieter shutter, OVF, and built in ND.
