Dear Ghosts,
Edit: The reason I didn't opt for the Cine version speedbooster was because of 3 reasons. I don't use follow focus, I just use my hands (i am a weird handheld purist) so i dont need the super tight lock (the normal version locks fine for general use). The non-cine version only requires one hand to change lenses, which is useful for run and gun. Finally, the price and ergonomics. The locking mechanism on the cine version crowds finger space near the grip, making it uncomfortable.
I wanted to test full frame more and film something similar to what I used to do except this time with the metabones speed booster. I think when you use full frame you shouldn’t typically go above f5.6 otherwise it beings to look indistinguishable from s35. It’s risky though, since more shallow aperture means background blur can causes banding issues for RU-vid. It also makes pulling focus much harder but I don’t mind, focusing by hand is so enjoyable with the Otus lens. Actually I think manual focus is the most fun you can have with photography, but that’s for another video. I feel like the whole purpose of full frame is the depth of field and it feels more worthwhile when shooting shallower apertures. Otherwise, for my style of videos I don’t see enough points to fully transition full frame.
I’ve noticed that this speed booster causes some distortion and also some chromatic aberration. But it also exceeded my expectations and gave me so much light, at iso 3200 you get more light than what you can see in real life. Regarding color grading, I converted flog2 files to Arri Log C, which has tremendous dynamic range, but it’s kinda offset by the fact that the xh2s can only go down to 1250 iso. You NEED an ND filter if you want to shot flog2, otherwise you have to shoot at f11 or after sunset. With Arri log C it is tough to get the skin tones right, i think i did ok aside for the consistency. It’s also annoying that there is no native conversion for flog2 yet in Davinci Resolve, I mean Leica’s log profile is already supported. LEICA. Yes, the photo camera with barely any video specs. C'mon, Fujifilm and Davinci! My most recent videos should look a lot better as I only realized recently my color space management was off, causing desaturation when uploaded to youtube. The only problem now is banding, which is difficult to avoid when you shoot shallow apertures.
Overall I love my current setup. I don’t like rigs, as I think it takes the fun out of shooting so I will probably stick with the setup for a while until Blackmagic releases a new camera, hopefully with native EF mount. My mouth waters at the idea of having an even more organic image paired with this lens.
Spend wisely.
Love,
CGC

On the topic of lenses for this X-H2s, what's your take on Fuji's lens supposedly created for video using this camera, the XF 18-120mm? I've seen mixed reviews on this lens, but they mostly seem to be coming from primarily photographers. This is meant to be a video first lens. Can you perhaps do some of your thorough video tests with that lens? I'm trying to decide between that one and maybe one of the prime LM lenses for cinematic video. And great videos my friend! I agree this last color grade was awesome, and would love to see a video tutorial on your process.

I think Fujifilm lens design language is very clear, they focus on color, rendering, sharpness. They don’t prioritize depth because it’s apsc. Even the gfx line is like this, only one f1.7. These lenses are typically for photography and the past zooms haven’t impressed me, I don’t see why the new one would change. I’ll keep an eye out for it, though

Let me jump in here for a second. I am an architecture/cityscapes Photographer for 15 years. A recent project brought me to film making (as I could not find a film maker to see my artistic concept). For Around a year I am now into Fujifilm cinematography, using a X-H2S and a GFX100S. Now, to the point: For the 'Cine X One' (aka rigged up X-H2s) the XF 18-120 is my only AF lens. And I have to say I really like it. As said below, it's very sharp and offers precise color rendering. Especially when shooting something quickly, the film simulations (I use Classic_negative a lot) come out great. It's parfocal and does not really breathe - For the price of the lens, the performance is amazing. I would love to see one or two more focal lengths to go with this one. The lens is very light so the rig stays in the 3,5 kg range. Otherwise, I use a SIRUI anamorphic (x-mount) and cine.modded Canon FDs from the 1970s ... Right now, I am starting to set up a DZOfilm set of lenses (as the PL-mount versions will work on both systems (x-mount and GF-mount using adapters) .... Sorry for writing too much probably ...

I been using X-H1, Metabones speed booster and CONTAX Zeiss legacy lenses since 2020, for still photography. The image quality is excellent. The only issue is Metabones’ lens mounts is not as good quality as OEM. I pair this combination with Gigapixel AI in order to upscale to 400dpi for printing at 16” x 20”. Happy to share sample images.

@@julesfisher3551 I see, I wonder if you have problems with other lenses or just the contax zeiss because mine fits quite perfectly. The only thing apprehension I have for you is is you wont be able to focus to infinity with the extension tube as well as the lack of sharpness, that might be a problem with the wider lenses (don't know your focal length) since the contax zeiss aren't super sharp to begin with. Or are you just tinkering and swapping out the mount? That probably should fix all your problems
@julesfisher3551

@@cleverghostchili You misunderstood. The issue with the Metabones C/Y mount is that it is not a direct copy of the OEM C/Y mount. Thus it is sloppy, requiring shims. What are your thoughts on the xh2s image vs the fx3? which one do you prefer. Also man its time for you to drop a quick color grade tutorial. The fx3 is getting viral because it was used for a feature film (probably just a few nighttime scenes). It’s an amazing camera for lowlight. The image id say is a bit better as it’s a bit more organic, however the color science can be a bit saturated as colors separation is a bit jarring, giving a uncanny feel. Color contrast, if that is a thing. It can’t shoot photos either. For me it comes down to lenses. I need an ef mount option so I’d choose Fujifilm but the fx3 image is less digital.

Both are great though, there are no limitations to creating beautiful images or filmmaking in general at this point of time. Could definitely make a movie with either using good exposure, lenses and lighting. Just wondering did you use The angel bird card to update the xh2s? or did you use AN sd card. hi. I came across this video through an algorithm. I clicked on it without much expectation and was shocked to see your video. Most of the X-H2s videos I've seen don't have a cinematic feel to them, but yours is amazing. It almost makes me think I don't need an ARRI camera. The power of the lens is truly amazing. Do you think this lens could be used on the S5IIx in full frame without a speedbooster to achieve this look? I was considering the S5IIx because it supports prores and has more convenience features like AF and IBIS. Probably lower DR though. The Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4 lens is too expensive for me to get. The only ZEISS cine lenses I can borrow are the Compact Prime CP.2,3 series. Could you tell me what you think about this lens family? Where do you live? At first I thought it was Seoul because it looks so similar to my neighborhood apartment. 👧🏻
@cleverghostchili
@cleverghostchili Год назад
Hi Wes, I personally find the s5iix has an organic image, the problem is you will need a lens adapter, which elongates the mount which will still give you a rich cinematic image, just slightly less sharp which isn’t bad at all. The Otus lens is full frame EF and Nikon mount. Also the xh2s has ProRes and AF and ibis. As for the Zeiss cp3 it is one of the lenses I researched before the buying the Otus. It will give you a different look, similar to the Cooke lenses. Soft, vintage, less contrast compared to the Otus. If you want something more similar to the otus I suggest the Milvus line. I live in mainland China, great place for cinematography.

@@cleverghostchili I've never used a Panasonic, but I've heard that RF and L mounts are better for adapters because of their shorter range. Is it even more advantageous to use an adapter for a Fuji with a small sensor? In Korea, it seems that Fuji is rarely chosen for video. I've heard of problems with exposure changes when zooming. AF and IBIS are also not trusted. So it's hard to share information. Plus, Fuji Korea sells the X-H2s at a weirdly high price. But it's a body I've always been curious about. In other videos, the X-H2s is too sharp and highlights are easily blown out, but your images are very nice, even though they were shot with Fuji's LM lenses, not cinema lenses. It looks like you're basically grading really well. However, the Otus images are absolutely stunning. I looked hard, but neither the Otus nor the Milvus are available for rent here. They're not even in my price range. It's so sad. I don't mind a little less contrast, so I'm going to look into CP3, PL mount lenses or even anamorphic lenses. Your videos are much more helpful because the weather and environment where you shoot is similar to mine. Glad to have found your channel. 💙

@@WES-pt2ho well with the speed booster you basically get the same sharpness since there is glass in between, but the rf and l mounts are already full frame so it would have no glass I presume. I think it’s a setting because I had the same problem on the xt3 and it stopped one day, but I don’t know which setting it is, perhaps an ae lock but I digress… You can also try the Zeiss jenas, or superspeeds, and ofc vintage Contax, very different looks.
