I recently changed from a pair of Nikon D850's to a FujiFilm GFX100s. It was time for a change of camera systems, but what I didn't know, was that it was also about to change me...
After this video, you can read more in my blog about why I changed from Nikon to the FujiFilm GFX100s here - www.neilshelby...
In this video I take you to the beautiful St Cywfans on the Island of Anglesey in North Wales to talk about my FujiFilm GFX100s and how, possibly, I'm becoming an ageing hipster... I own two day hats now!

A lovely video, I would really love to hear more about assistive technologies for cameras you use and your perspectives on it in general, what could be done by manufacturers etc. There's a whole community of people designing assistive technologies and giving 3D printable models away for others to use and improve.
@NeilShelbyLong
@NeilShelbyLong 2 года назад
Hey John, that’s a really good and thought provoking comment there. For me, I don’t use any assistive technologies. I was born like this as so I’ve never known any different and I’ve always adapted my techniques to suit my requirements. Many, many years ago, I tried a prosthetic arm (admittedly way before todays digital technology was available), but even by the age of 11 / 12, I’d got used to doing things my way, so it just became a hinderance. However, I am a huge fan of assisted technologies for those who need it and it really enhances their lives. People with disabilities from accidents or children still developing skills for instance are probably going to benefit in immeasurable ways, compared to an old dog like me who’s doing his best just to keep up with what my new phone can do… don’t even get me started on crypto and NFT’s 🤪🤯 The communities designing and giving away these technologies are doing great things, and long may they continue. Just as long as they’re listening to the end users and considering the endless ways disabilities affect individuals. Well that was a bit deep for me… time for coffee.

@NeilShelbyLong 3 года назад
Hi Rob, thanks for the nice comment. Yes, the 45-100 was on my radar, but simply due to circumstances at the time, I ended up with the 32-64 and filled the gaps with the 80mm & 110mm. As I shoot quite a few portraits, these are serving me well. However, if I was able to travel more, that 45-100 would be perfect!
@RobJorg

Yeah, I loved the Nikon primes, but I think the difference on the GF lenses will be smaller simply because of the sensor size, dynamic range etc. Having both those zooms in your bag will cover so many options, I doubt you’ll worry about the primes. 😊

As a hat lover myself, I found this to be the most honest representation of the feelings you got from 100S. Switching from Sony, I really fell in love with 50s/r after testing, but after the release of 100s, it was obvious. Fujifilm really listened to the users and what they need. The way they packed everything up is stunning. I’m happy to say after few quick tests with the S, I’m moving on towards to the quality I want to work with. And that hat, suits you sir! Thank you Neil. Packing up atm with 23mm, 63mm and 120mm

I'm happy with my Z7II, but still love medium format. I shot with film RB67s for years and they were great for editorial work. I do a lot of fast action wildlife and equestrian and find the Z7II and 500mm pf to be a LOT of fun for birds and such. Anyway, the gfx100s is on my radar and I love your approach to vlogging. See you next time. :)

Hi Tony, thanks for the nice comments. To be honest, if Nikon had supplied the Z7ii when it was supposed to be here, I’d probably be an owner. Hi and thanks for the comment. Yes, the GFX system is remarkable and I can understand why you’d love the 50R. It will definitely be interesting if they bring out a 100R… I could seriously see other manufacturers having to take a long hard look at their development lines.

There’s no doubt the GFX 100S calls for a more deliberate approach to photography, and like you say, if the image will only mostly live on Instagram then faster systems, with fewer pixels to upload will serve better. But for prints, well that’s an entirely different story. 16-bit color, combined with 102 megapixels and these excellent lenses, allows for subtleties in transitions not possible with any other camera in this price range. In addition, the 4:3 aspect ratio invites different kinds of compositions in camera, compositions which require substantial cropping in full-frame to pull off. No one seems to talk about this, but I find the GFX provides a more immersive point of view most of the time. Focus is challenging of course. When you miss with wider apertures (even by a few mm sometimes), it becomes painfully obvious because there is SO much detail exactly where you don’t want it. But in the end, I love to create prints measured in feet rather than inches, and when you do nail one of these images and bring it up to life size or even well beyond, there’s nothing so powerful. Lean in, peer as close as you want. The pixels never show. And that to me is a *magic* in photography hard to match.
@NeilShelbyLong
@NeilShelbyLong 3 года назад
An excellent observation. You’re absolutely right about the much more favourable aspect ratio and of course the lack of pixels on show at extreme close range. With the challenge of focus, I’ve found allocation a fn button for critical focus absolutely essential and I’m forever using it now. Thanks for the comments, really appreciated.
@waveland
@waveland 3 года назад
@@NeilShelbyLong I tend to leave focus peaking on almost all of the time as a rough guide, and then zoom into the frame to tweak critical focus, though even then I tend to dial in frames which are ever so slightly focus-nudged closer and further than what peaking shows. Depending on lighting, those colored highlights may not quite hit the perfect spot. Or if shooting handheld I might rock my body ever so slightly to move the focal plane in small increments across the subject. The GFX 100 series rewards patience, no doubt about it.

loved this, will read your blog! i’m just getting back into photography after a long time away (illness) and find that in terms of digital sensors, things haven’t gotten as much better as i’d have expected in the last decade - which is wild to me as a old school film lover. but it sounds like maybe i’m just looking in the wrong place! you’ve made the gfx100s seem very exciting. question: i have a disability where my joints are hypermobile and can easily slip or even dislocate, including my fingers, so ergonomics and (not too much) well- distributed weight are crucial for me . how do you find the gfx100s in this regard?
@NeilShelbyLong
@NeilShelbyLong 3 года назад
Hi and thanks for the comments and great query. Overall I’d say Fujifilm have created a well balanced camera, but obviously the larger lenses do add weight and centre of gravity changes. The wonderful thing I love about this camera, as I said, is that you are reminded you’re using a medium format. The obvious advantage to the likes of us that have mobility or digit impairments, is that medium format is meant to be a slower and more considered way of creating images. This isn’t a walk around, everyday carry, point and shoot system. Make life easy for you. Use a tripod or monopod. Use a hand strap, or whatever works for you. With this system you really don’t ‘have’ to use it freehand with the viewfinder. Tripod mounted using the rear screen and setting a ‘fn’ button to critical focus, will ensure accurate focus every time. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask anything I haven’t explained here. Thanks, Neil.

NeilShelbyLong thanks for your answer! you make a lot of sense - to think about it in a different paradigm, and treat it like the old MF cameras rather than a beefier DSLR even though it looks like one. (I still regret selling my RB67 in the early 2000s… but they are too unwieldy for me now.) Now to figure out an ergonomic way to carry a tripod! Well, and plan the purchase 😅 Think I might end up with a gfx50-something so I can use adapted lenses without making it look terrible! PS: love the hat, it suits you!
@NeilShelbyLong

You’re very welcome, any time. And I appreciate the hat comment 😁 Ah yes, the RB67, built like a tank and weighed just as much… but I did love the images that they produced 😊. The GFX50 in its various configurations looks lovely and it was going to be my choice until they announced the 100s. Good luck with the hunt and I hope you find a system that works for you. 👍🏻

Very cool. Similar journey journey. Few different twists. Impressed that you carry around the 110 for landscape. My basic kit is 23, 45-100, 100-200, plus I keep and XT4 with 70-300 for reach. Although cropping is nearly infinite on the GFX. Great location and great images!
@NeilShelbyLong
@NeilShelbyLong 3 года назад
Thank you. That’s really nice of you to say. Yes, I’m not your ‘usual’ landscape photographer. I really like the compression the 110 gives to that type of composition. You’ve still got the lead into the image with the causeway, but it’s compressed more so the focus is more on the island and church. I’ve got the 80mm too which I used recently on a double building nuclear power station. The 110 was a fraction too tight for the position I could get to for the composition. That’s a lovely set up you’ve got there. Enjoy 😊

Great vd. My 1st Fuji was the XT1 and I got some of my favorite photos with that camera. Prior to that camera I had a Nikon D700 and even the ancient D100 back in the day as my first digital camera. I took a break from photography but got back into it with Canon 5D3 then the 1DXii. Both amazing cameras but after selling all my Canon stuff to switch to the XT3 with a few lenses, I was hooked and sold! I've not had the chance to shoot medium format Fuji yet but I have a feeling once I do that.... it will be game over. I can't quite afford or justify the GFX100 or 100s and a lens or two for what I do but I'm hoping if Fuji comes out with a MKii 50S or R than it could be more attenable. If they priced a new version of the 50s similar in size with the 100S and gave it an updated 50mp sensor, IBIS, 4k60 shooting internal for about $3200-3500 that would be incredible.... or I could look for a used 50r and keep the XT3 for video and more action photo work too. I would just love a do it all camera and the 100s seems almost there.
@NeilShelbyLong

Hi Joshua. In all honesty, most of my previous kit, the Nikons, 90% was probably used kit. I only went for the new Fujifilm kit because it was a game changer and the promised Nikon Z7ii couldn’t compete. So give it a couple of months and you may be able to treat yourself to a digital medium format for Xmas… 😉 Actually my GF 250 lens is used. There’s definitely GF kit hitting the used market already and I expect a few of the GFX50’s will be going for a nice price soon. Anyway, thanks for the comments, I really appreciate it.

@@NeilShelbyLong Oh yeah for sure... I can't remember the last time I actually bought a brand new piece of gear. Camera bodies and lenses are usually bought on KEH, or MPB but are in EX+ condition and usually come with the original box ect but I save tons of $$ on that. Hopefully in the coming months and the Fuji Summit will shed some light on their next 6-12 month path. I've already seen GFX100 for that 6k mark but the 100s is a no brainer being way smaller. I think I would be happy with a 50r as sometimes I just wish I had a touch more MP than 26 of the XT3 and that MF look as people say. I have a Hasselblad 500CM and love shooting that but Would love a digital MF camera. I've seen some 50r on eBay for just under 3k US.

No, I didn’t dare own a Fedora when I first got my D850…😂😂😂. But what an excellent observation about the comparison between the two cameras. I believe it definitely has the longevity capacity of the D850. Thank you Hank for the comment and question to ponder.
@josh885
@josh885 3 года назад
Funny you should say that. Becuse as a Nikon shooter the GFX 100 always seemed to me like the D3X replacement Nikon user's never got. I still use a D800 and to me a GFX 100S feels more like true upgrade to that camera than even the D850 was. See when I bought the D800 it was because it had the best, highest resolution, highest dynamic range, sensor in any camera you could get for less than a nice mid range car. The sensor is why I and many others even bought that camera in the first place. Sure the D850 had slightly better sensor but not really enough of an upgrade too get excited for. Not game changing the way the 36MP sensor in the D800 felt like. But a GFX 100S has that same special feel the original D800 did when the launch video proudly proclaimed "I am the big picture." If Nikon came out with a Z8 at like 80MP and $4-4.5K it might tempt me. But in the end would still probably buy a GFX 100S instead.
@NeilShelbyLong
@NeilShelbyLong 3 года назад
Cheers Josh. Yes, you’re right. Nikon really need to step out of their comfort zone and offer something like a Z8 you describe. They risk losing more customers to the likes of Fujifilm who are clearly aiming at those of us who enjoy that authentic Medium Format experience in a modern and ‘relatively’ affordable manner. Great observations, thanks.
